My name is Nigel, and I'm 63 years old from Swadlincote near Burton-on-Trent. I have just joined the forum, and purchased my first Pendraken 10mm Napoleonic Austrians.
I used to game regularly until around 25 years ago when I had to stop for various reasons. I am looking to get back into the hobby again now I've the time on my hands.
What I'd like to know for a start is suggestions for a basing system for my 10mm Austrians that is suitable for use with both Blucher and LaSalle 2, both rule sets which I have recently purchased and would like to try out without the need for 2 different basing systems.
Any suggestions would be much appriciated.

Welcome on board. No idea on the basing front I'm afraid, other than maybe going for 1" squares, with 4 per Battalion/Regiment (works for many rulesets) and then sabot bases to fit the rules you have in mind.

If you do go down the sabot route the nice Mr Leon is happy to produce custom 2mm MDF sabots

It suggests a 30*20 for Laselle and a 75 sabot for Blucher. Though I don't know how flexible those rules are, you could possibly do something on a 50 frontage that'll work with both?
Though you're maybe thinking more in terms of number of figures? As a rule of thumb you can easily fit one 10mm figure in 1 cm square, though for linear troops you can squeeze in some more fairly easily, maybe needing about 7mm per figure. So for a 30x20 base you could comfortably fit two rows of 3, a total of six figures, or for a denser look you could go for 4 abreast on the 30 frontage. 3 deep on a 20 depth would be probably a little tight and I wouldn't recommend.
Probably one thing to consider is how much time and energy you have to put into it. Assuming you're making some sizable armies, the difference between a six and an eight figure base can add up pretty quickly in painting time. Personally I dislike having lots of bases in a unit and prefer to go with one or two larger bases that allow you a bit more flexibility with basing. Your tastes may vary though, and depends on how particular or flexible the rules are!

On basing, I don't know either of those rules but this is what I use for Napoleonic 10mm. The ratios are 1 figure = 10 men and 1 model gun/limber = 2 guns/limbers.
Infantry - 7mm frontage per figure
Skirmishers - 10mm frontage per figure
Cavalry - 10mm frontage per figure
Artillery piece - 30mm frontage
Hi everyone, and thanks for the replies (especially all those calling me young lol) i am thinking along the same lines as mmcv (thank you) and also john cook for your frontage info. In both cases I'm looking at around 7mm per figure though slightly more as 4 figures on a 30mm frontage seems about right to me then 4 such bases per unit making the unit have a frontage of 60mm. I can then place these in a sabot (hopefully Leon can help) with a width of 75mm. I think then the 4 bases should work nicely with LaSalle 2 whilst when placed in the 75mm sabot they should work nicely with Boucher.

I'd be interested in how you paint those white uniforms. I've not done it to my satisfaction, so although I field an 1813 Austrain army, I am shying away from Saxons, Italians and Spanish.
