I've seen a few boardgames miniaturised.

The best one was an enlarged version of the old Battle Cry, American civil war game.
The fellow had made an enlarged version of the hex-board scaled up about three times.
He added 28mm Units, but while Battle Cry units have 4 figures (Infantry), he made 12 figure units.
3 elements of 2 units each, for initial casualties, and a "most of the unit" element of the remaining twelve.

He then took the game around the US Convention circuit where it was well received.

I think  the biggest challenge for miniaturising any boardgame is producing the game board / tiles as terrain.
This can be avoided by
a) Using tiny scale figures.
b) Using custom made Minis (I think its Wargames Foundry who make sets of figures as pawns for the Colditz game.
