Title: Roads? + columns
Post by: Jcfrog on 12 October 2022, 07:24:06 PM
reading, trying, playing, re reading.3..
no mention of roads in terrain, i.e. road movement bonuses.
I can understand that on a table 180x12 (2.4 km front) no one would really be "on roads", well except if you play a 1-1 scale?
for ex. my Brdm is slower off road than a scimitar, fine; buton a road it would be faster, Scimitar, or especially a tank.
I was thinking (platoon scale) to give tracked +20%, wheels +1/2.

Another thing, as I am re studying (after 30 years) Wpact opfor manuals, nothing for company or bn  columns, which was the favoured approach thing till, say a few km (which i can do on my table ;) ). This, as it is widely easier to control (the terrain avoidance is already there if your table is not a flat desert).
I though of having columns re roll the first command roll if they missed.

Any thoughts?

All wheeled vehicles move at double speed if their full move is all on a a road. It is in the Special Characteristics/Abilities section at the back of the book.

No difference for tracked, as generally you try not to run tracked vehicles on their tracks on a road for any length of time, as it destroys the tracks pretty quickly.

Not sure what real difference advancing in a columns would actually make at this scale.
But you could try out the Line Commander optional rules - which can also be found in the SCW supplement and apply that to troops in a column.

Hope that helps
Cheers

thanks
seems I have not explored the thing deep enough!

I don't remember tracks being damaged but I do remember Germans asking for money for numerous repairs...and downward howling about the budget afterwards.

Not a problem - the devil is almost always in the detail  ;)
