Title: 2mm figures for use with 1/1200 ships
Post by: Sunray on 22 August 2022, 11:03:08 PM
Other than Irregular Minatures is there any other source for 2mm figures that would work with 1.1200 scale ships?

In particular stands/bases that could be used in 20th Century, so I would settle for skirmishers from another era. I have looked at laser cast but conceed a little scale creep is acceptable

Look up Project Wargaming on You Tube.  He has many videos of his stuff - 3D printed.

The Pig ones are 1/600th for their ACW range. Magister Militum used to do 1/1200th scale aircraft.

Thanks for this. I checked out Magister Miltrum to look at their aircraft/ships AND.....discovered they also do 1/1200 figures.

So I have ordered 1x infantry pack, 1x support weapons and a pack of "mixed allied vehicles"

I will keep you all posted.

Aww, Ian, we all know that if one looks under that rough, abrasive exterior, one finds a heart of honest aggression and childlike quarrelsomeness.

My interest with these micros was sparked by two things: First, a old friend and wargamer passed away, and his family gave me a box of allsorts- the main 6mm collection went on ebay. In the box I found a collection - mostly unpainted Irregular 2mm, but some by another manufacturer. My suspicion is there were cast by Knight designs back in the 1980s ?? Does anyone remember these figures?

I have also wanted for some time a Tigermoon tray wargame for travelling/visiting family. Tigermoon do a very good value pirate Island mat. I have named the project "Wargame in paradise"
set on the fictitious island of St Marie.

Yeah. If only I'd bought more. Their WW2 Russian tanks were excellent (well, as good as a 2mm scale tank can be). I'm pretty sure the few I have/had are at the bottom of a box of unpainted miniatures - somewhere ☹️
Cheers,
Geoff

Heroics & Ros have 1/600 scale WW2 ships, aircraft, vehicles and terrain

As you mention you are not adverse to a "little" scale creep what about going up 1mm to Picoarmor 3mm stuff?

They do both WW2 and modern infantry as individual figures which may suit your needs?  :-\

https://picoarmor.com/war-shop/ (https://picoarmor.com/war-shop/)

I have some of their 3mm aircraft which are really nicely cast, but haven't seen the infantry figures in the flesh.

I believe Picoarmor sell Oddzial Osmy's 3mm stuff. I have loads of WW2 and Samurai stuff from them. Amazing detail considering the scale.

100% correct - from Poland if I remember correctly? The aircraft I have are really well detailed, just dont try to drill or file them too much, the metal alloy they use is very hard.

I am awaiting MM infantry & vehicles (WW2) to arrive then a compare and contrast with Ian Kay's Irregular 2mm.

Yes, I have 3mm (1/600) Oddzial (from Magister Miltrum again)- the newer sets like South African infantry are amazing.

I prefer the TD aircraft in 1/600 - the exaggered charicture in the sculpting makes them fun to paint

Looking through my late friend's box of lead, reminded me of how much we sample and hoard. I found Foundry, QRF, Peter Pig, Dixons, Platoon 20, H&R 6mm, Skytrex, Irregular and a host of others. Even some Airfix Russians with Bostik holding together Charles Grant inspired conversions. Oh yes, and 1/87 Minitanks - lovely little models that went so well with 1960s Airfix. And the early scenery - that Bluebell Farm set- might even fit 10mm, and Bellona bridge. How often it changed hands.

Well, the lead arrived and went back to MM for a prompt refund. Just tiny blobs -very true to 1/1200 scale.  But at this scale you do need a little exaggeration, so sticking with Irregular for infantry and vehicles. And some 3mm(1/600)Oddzial artillery that are smaller than infantry.
It works!

Is this 1mm scale?  I remember seeing 1mm at the Dunstable show about 30 years ago; just a metal blob.  Nobody was impressed and I have never seen it since. A decent 0mm top-down picture was better and at least 2mm gives you something workable as an end product.

Correct.  At 1/1200 you would be luck to have men 1mm tall. So some like MM use pin head small blobs. I prefer the 2mm Irregular - exaggerated but both workable and paintable.
A lot of cross-overs- Irregular motorbike riders will pass for 3mm(1/600) as will their big lorries, tankers and transports. The Irregular Higgins LCA is good for 1/1600

In terms of 3mm, 1/600 cross over to 2mm, Oddzial artillery is often smaller than their figures, and you can small AT guns with a bit of tweaking to represent larger pieces in 2mm.

When it comes to aircraft, we could do with a few more from Irregular!

Thanks for this. I had a look via the links you kindly provided, but alas even smaller than Air Cap 1/1200 and very rich in costs.
Then the late Teddy Petter came to my salvation.  I have a memory of being shoehorned into his sleek little Folland Gnat - My RAF host apologised "Its like a Glasgow tenement - no ballroom!"

The Gnat was a mere 28ft long. Even in 1/600 from Tumble Dice it will fit with my 2mm. With a little clipping and filing it will proxy for other types. Way to go- other shrunk aircraft like the Brewster Buffalo.

The 2mm Irregular range as a poor generic style tracked APC. By comparsion the wheeled BTR60 type is a decent model.

For a tracked APC the Oddzial SPz11 "Kurz" in 1/600 - a diminutive model in any scale, will proxy well as a 10 man battle taxi at the smaller scale.
