Title: Ancient Indians
Post by: fsn on 05 May 2022, 04:23:48 PM
I'm getting low on my list of unstarted projects. I'm in the purchase phase of Napoleonic Danes, and from June I may be able to flesh out an Ottoman force. Then, I'm waiting for Amazons and Napoleonic Spanish ... but in the meantime I'm pondering Ancient Indians as a spoiler for Alexander's Macedonians.

I am coming up short on reference materials. Osprey seems a little barren and a Google search is somewhat sparse as well.

Can anyone recommend a good book or website that covers Indian armies of the period?

Thank you.

An obvious source is Armies and Enemies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars by Duncan Head.
Its an old one but if you are (or become) a member of the Society of Ancients, Duncan is a member of their forum and there are probably more recent discussions there

I found a few references in my Slingshot index which I can share (unlike the actual mags):

Ancient Indian Armies (42/2-6, David Court)
Notes on Ancient Indian Armies (66/22-23, Jim Webster)
Ancient Indian Archery (113/45-46, Duncan Head)
A Note on the Maiden Guard of the Mauryas (116/23-24, Duncan Head)
Chariot Warfare in the Indian Epics (119/2-4, William Hamblin)
Rathamusala war carts (178/40, Duncan Head)
Porus's Pachyderms – Stompin' and Shootin' with Classical Indians using DBM (212/17-18, David
Davidson)
Ancient Indian Chariots (255/10-11, John Walsh)
The Classical Indian Archer (297/40-42, Richard Lockwood)
