Does anybody else interested in 19th Century Military History remember Napoleon's famous quote
"Don't start a land war in eastern Europe, because the farmers will nick all your artillery"? :-\
No.
But I am for some unaccountable reason reminded of "I have no further territorial claims to make in Europe."
And, watching footage of Boris, our beloved PM, today I had the bizarre thought,"Peas in our time!"
All very strange.

I thought "Peas in our time" was a John Major quote. I think I picked it up from Spitting Image?
What Indians?
"A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies."

Yes, Minister? ;)
War: a massacre of people who don't know each other for the profit of people who know each other but don't massacre each other.Paul Valery

Not sure Fun Stuff is really the place for this
Wait, I want to change the die I've been rolling with.
- Fierce Kitty.
A gentle reminder that the great idiot said "Peace for our time", quoting Disraeli, and "peace IN our time" is a religious, not military, quotation.

No I didnt.
And as for Chamberlain, have a watch of the film Munich. It plays it there as an attempt to buy more time to re-arm as the threat had not been fully recognised and defence spending cut.
And there has long been a quote that signing the paper was the worst mistake Hitler thought he had made pre-war.
I know not what is truth. Just saying.
Victory is assured unless I roll a double one. - Me.
I like the Rapier miniatures t-shirt slogan
What is best in life?
Crush your enemies
See them driven before you
Hear the lamentations
About their dice rolling
:) :) :)
Throughout History... and forever in conflict... the Military Quote HAS to be...
"Oh! Sh*t!"

Going up to University aged 18, I saw my first ancients game; until then it had been Airfix WWII. Sassanian cataphracts charged Byzantine Trapezites. To the horror of the Byzantine commander the light cavalry dice roll to evade resulted in a counter-charge. The combat dice went 6-1 in favour of the light cavalry, who rode down the cataphracts! Quite an introduction to the ancient period.
An oft repeated and one of the most famous:
"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance (unless they roll 01 and the shooter is rated 'expert wizard'}"
During a game I advised Orcs "if you roll a 1, the gun blows up, and kills the crew".
In the style of Churchill or Napoleon he merely said "I don't intend to roll a one."
I will leave the result of the roll to the reader's imagination.

It was a great cause of merriment though :D
Did you at least pause briefly before rolling to give the crew a chance to run for it :'(

But a double 1 on a Command Roll in BKC/CWC/FWC is a Command Bonus Steve ... so there are some silver linings in wargames rules after all ;)

I have a long-standing wargaming associate (I think that is the proper terminology) who regularly states with glee "don't roll a 1" & each time he says it I suspect he doesn't know just how close he comes to a cruel and gruesome death ... from not only me, but everybody else he plays with >:(
But, of course, he is totally oblivious to the same tactic being used on him back :'(
Am I just too sensitive a soul to be playing games with dice???
I am very fond of the quote by Xenophon (amended)
'He could have lived a risk-free, moneyed life, but he preferred to whittle away his fortune on warfaregaming.'
"
How do you make a small fortune out of wargaming?
Start with a large one . . .
I like it - I like it - so true :)

Yes. Switch to games which use playing cards.
