Title: Hurrah or Huzzah
Post by: Heedless Horseman on 16 February 2022, 06:09:33 PM
Miniatures tend not to be all that vocal,,, but I have long been curious about 'cheers'.
'Modern' usage seems to indicate use of the 'R'... as in "Hip, Hip, Hooray"...
or even "Hoorah, hoorah, hoorah, yeah, yeah!"

LOL!  ;)

Yet many earlier references such as illustrated 'cartoons' etc. spell with 'Z'.

Is this an actual cheer or the result of changing calligraphy / typos, to produce "Huzzah"?

To Me... the 'Z' does not 'roar' enough to inspire!  ;)

Superfluous Zs may have cut a days midway through Victoria's reign.

These days they're the shibboleth of the Gamez Workshop Fanboyz.

The Russkies are on record as using that form in the 18th century at the latest.

It's a good throaty roar if delivered in unison.

You can do it even on a dry dusty day when you can't muster much saliva.
Puts the willies up your enemy almost as effectively as bagpipes.

Apparently, the current school of thought is that 'Huzzah!' should be pronounced like 'Hooray!' [fast forward to 9.35 if you don't want to watch the whole video]

Nope, not banned at all, in fact recommended.
