Title: Freezing Rain today - Newfoundland at its best...
Post by: Shapur II on 05 February 2022, 09:05:04 PM
I have to admit to being a long time lurker.  I have also been collecting Pendraken figures for quite some time.  Painting them has been a challenge, though there are painted Zulus, 8th Army, WWII French and a very few 1809 Naps around here somewhere.

Of late I have been assembling a large unpainted collection of 1809 Napoleonics to add to my Normans, Mongols and Arabs.  There are probably others that I have misplaced/forgotten.

So why expose myself now?  Should probably rephrase that. Part of the reason is that the local gaming community is rather small.  I do know of one other player who is collecting early war WWI, I have French for that project, but 28mm rules.  Add the recent difficulties with group socialization and advancing age and I find that I have limited opportunity for 10mm gaming.

So here I am looking to expand my gaming community to help with my total lack of discipline and focus.

I'll be following along with projects and continuing to develop ideas based on the fact that I, like most gamers, know more than rules designers. I expect to be asking questions, turning green with envy at the painting skills of others and encouraging Leon to make the figures I need at the expense of everyone else...

I also aim to champion 10mm as a counter to Epic (insert era here). The 1809 Peninsular project will certainly help with that goal.

Sorry no blog, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or other newfangled distractions.

Welcome to the Forum Stewart, and thank you for exposing yourself. Nice intro.

As a long time lurker, you will already be aware of this forums ability to move off at a tangent, and with in three posts a Thread on peninsular Napoleonic's is discussing why the british did not proprerly adopt the 3.7" AA gun as an anti tank weapon.

I am sure various people will be able to assist with painting ideas/guides and what next you should add to your lead mountain.  I for one am jealous of those with only a lead mountain. I currently have a mountain range despite drastically reducing figure purchases in the last couple of years.

Hi Orc

Thanks, I'm planning 17pdr's for my Brits.  Now, I need someone to talk me out of it as I got my Char B's mixed in with my French Naps and sorting them is just too much trouble. Besides, I hate painting horses.

I think I may be on my way to a mountain range as retired and recently single I find myself spending FAR too much time online.   Must paint, cannot shop while painting...

Welcome Stewart :-h Thanks for the intro

One approach that may help with focus is painting a few units of each side, enough to give a small game.

Then progressively adding a unit or two to each side allowing larger and larger games...

My ranking says I'm a cadet.  Will Leon respond to demands for credit for all of the years I've been buying while lurking?  Just saying...

QuoteOne approach that may help with focus is painting a few units of each side, enough to give a small game.

Good suggestion. My current Napoleonic plan is to paint command bases suitable for single base rules such as HFG and The Marshal's Baton. Once I have that done, I plan to expand each of the units to the size needed for 10mm versions of General D'armee and Black Powder.

Ok, that might just be what I think at the moment. The plan could change based on factors as yet undetermined like, I find that I am enticed by 30 years of War in Augsburg with Marlborough.

Did I mention I had a short attention span...

Well welcome.  I am sure this forum will help you reach a new standard of excellence of lacking discipline and focus.  I get re-focused to new periods every time someone posts!!  :D  :D

Absolutely. You may be focussing on Marian legions, then Pendraken release a range for the Risorgimento and next thing you know you're pouring over maps of the Po and eating Garibaldi biscuits.

Welcome.

Welcome Stewart, excellent introduction!

Some of my best armies are unpainted, the very best reside in my imagination.

My local wargaming community is non-existent.

The PF is my community and will become yours as well I suspect.

As a long time lurker you will know that PaulR should write a pamphlet on how vast armies can be painted with the simple discipline of spending 20 to 30 minutes a day 365 days a year (I think he takes leap day off but could be wrong) :D
His trick is to post his daily quota here on the forum - often without picture.

His advise is sound.

Incidentally, I think every lurker should get a ribbon badge on their first post with a star added for each year from forum registration to that first post.

I have ideas for other ribbons but that's another story.

Yup, I'm in the presence of kindred spirits! I will point out that printed maps are dangerous things.  Invariably one will wonder what is just off the edge, investigate, then see a place name that seems vaguely familiar.  A quick google search reveals an obscure battle and voila! Another war and range of figures to obsess over.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.  It is easy to feel welcome here and I already have one new project planned.  Oh, and yes there has been progress I did prep 10 command bases worth of 1809 Bavarians for priming.   Now I'll put on the ancient history podcast...  No! :o  Not a good idea

This really is a different place.  I'm not from here originally. That honour goes to a place on the west coast of the North Sea some 3462km from here.  That will take some detective work.  Think Jute...

A place of strange accents and silly place names, like Blow me Down, Wreckhouse and Come by Chance. I once spotted a hitchhiker holding a cardboard sign that said Dildo.  We have vikings, 18th century battles and a few German torpedoes fired in anger.  Kind, hardy and funny people. Those who like hiking, rugged scenery or alcohol consumption should consider a visit.   Oh, and we are closer to French territory that anyone in the UK, excluding the Channel Islands

They did get the pronunciation of the Island correct, something the denizens of the place are quite protective of.  I will comment on the pronunciation of Toronto though.  The correct pronunciation is Trawna.

Welcome to the forum Stewart :-h

Newfoundland sounds like a great place - think I should consider a visit one day as I seem to qualify on all three grounds (not so much on the booze one purhaps O:-) ).

Mrs Shy is a great L.M. Montgomery fan so she's talked about going just down the road from you to Price Edward Island one day for many years, though we've never made it yet....We know a couple of Kiwis who have recently moved to Toronto as well.

Maybe when we can all travel a bit more freely....

Anyway look forward to seeing your 10mm Napoloenics in due course.

Cheers
Peter

Hi Stewart

Welcome and it looks as if you will fit in here just right!

Back in the day I remember being in the cockpit of a VC-10 flying over Newfoundland at night (landing at Gander on the way to Calgary) and the view was simply spectacular, the moon shining on the lakes, the number of stars in the sky, one of those experiences that will remain with me forever.

Cheers Paul

Mr and Mrs Shy.  Of course all are welcome,  I can recommend a few descent places to stay, imbibe and a restaurant or two.  But I must be sure that people are forewarned about distances here.  Of concern is "going just down the road" to PEI.

As Tango one three Alpha can attest, things are a LOT further apart than one might think. His stop in Gander, enroute to Calgary, would be less than half way from the UK.  Said distances are a major reason why hobby resources are difficult to obtain. For example, St. John's, where I hang my hat, to the Port Aux Basques ferry terminal is 903 km.  Then there is an 8 and one half hour ferry crossing to Nova Scotia, followed by close to 6 hours to PEI.  One could fly of course, but PEI is not on the beaten path so it is 10.5 hours in flights through Halifax.

Trawna is 3100km by road and ferry from St John's. The aforementioned Calgary, where my step-son resides, is 6200km from here.

To those upside-down on the far side of the planet, who also have funny accents, and where the flora and fauna is lethal, as befits a prison colony, these distances will be familiar.  I've also heard rumours about sexual acts with spiders but I find them difficult to believe.  Surely my cousins, yes, they ran even further from home than we did, would not...

But I digress.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome, but I'm still ranked as a Cadet despite Leon having commented on this thread.  So much for my 12+ year shopping while lurking credit.
