It's time for the Pendraken Painting Competition 2022!
With Covid still ongoing let's have something positive to focus on for a few weeks, so grab your brushes, dig out anything you've painted over the past 12 months and get those entries in. The 2022 Painting Competition will open to entries on February 1st and will be running all the way through until the end of the month. As always, this is a great opportunity to show what can be done in 10mm scale so we can't wait to see the entries.
Closing date for the competition will be midnight on Monday 28th February and we'll then open up the voting threads for everyone to decide our winners.
The categories will be the same as usual:
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Foot - 20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Mounted - Max: 20 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Vehicle - Max: 3 vehicles on or off bases, including wagons and chariots.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. This could be a command base, a single figure, artillery base, etc.
Open - Army - Anything which is larger than the maximums in the other categories, so multiple units or a whole army.
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome! The Forum registration is open again now, so head over and register!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). We do not allow montage images anymore, just to keep a level playing field. You can however edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. The best way to add your images is through a separate photo hosting site, or a blog, but if you have any difficulty posting pics then let us know and we'll help you out.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months, so we hope you've all been busy!
6. You can post WIP (work-in-progress) photos if you wish, but please create a new thread for these. You can also post extra photos of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by the Forum members, so once the closing deadline has passed, we'll put up a poll thread for each category where our members can vote on who they want to win. The polls will close 7 days later and the winners will be announced.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
And now the good bit, the prizes! With everything on one website now we've decided to up the ante a bit and increase the prizes all around, giving over £500 of prizes available! The winners and runners-up in each category will receive the following:
- The Winner of each category will receive £50 worth of Pendraken credit!
- The Runner-Up of each category will receive £25 worth of Pendraken credit!
Credit will be applied in the form of Loyalty Points added to your Pendraken website accounts, so you can spend it as you wish on any of the 6000 products we've got available.
So:
Competition opens - February 1st!
Closing deadline - Midnight, February 28th!
As always, if there's any questions just let us know!
Ah, time to think about what I might be able to paint and submit this year! The prizes are very nice too, thankyou :) .
Will the Raiden aircraft count, or only the Pendraken aircraft? I was just wondering as you retail them.
Argh!
What to do! :'(

Hah! I know you, at the speed you paint you've time to paint entries for all the categories .... twice over!
At the speed I paint I'll be lucky to have undercoated a dozen figures in the same time. :)
Fantastic, a timely incentive to take a few snaps of my growing hordes.
Thanks Leon, I'll have to work out what I've painted in the last year :-\
Some good prizes - nice to keep it simple and Pendraken themed.
Like Paul, I'll have to work out what I've actually painted in the last year - always takes a bit of sorting out.
Quote from: paulr on 26 January 2022, 07:24:14 PMThanks Leon, I'll have to work out what I've painted in the last year :-\
5580 figures!!!
Why do you think I always do fresh figures for the comp!!
Thanks Leon, my package just arrived and now getting stuck into them.

Afraid not on the Raiden aircraft, only Pendraken 10mm products for the competition. I've been trying to work out whether we could expand to include things like planes, or our 28mm ranges, but I'm not sure how much uptake there'd be to warrant another set of prizes?
That's what I thought Leon, so thanks for clarifying :) .
Do Elephants belong in the mounted, or other class?
How about camels?
Possibly a bit of a foolish question, but I'll ask it anyway. I am sure that there will be some absolutely amazing entries, but is there any reason why us average (or worse) painters shouldn't put something in just for the fun of taking part?

You could just allow them in the
Other category, rather than having to create more categories?

Absolutely - the standard has definitely increased over the years, but there has always been a strong element of participation, and the hope of attracting a few votes!

Both of those would go in the mounted category.

As fred says, it's just nice to see so many people getting involved. And with it being a public vote there's always a chance for anyone, different folks like different things!

Potentially but then we get the problem of different scales and whether a 10mm entry can compete with a 28mm one? Would a 6mm aircraft diorama do well vs a 10mm command stand?

I can send you some photos of my entries as proof that average or worse entries are accepted.
My tactic is to enter in the categories with the fewest entries.
I plan on having 3 cavalry per base, so 21 cavalry in total. Is one figure over the 20 max accepted?
The thin end of the wedge!
Quote from: Vincenzo21 on 30 January 2022, 09:03:42 AMI plan on having 3 cavalry per base, so 21 cavalry in total. Is one figure over the 20 max accepted?
Can you enter 6 bases instead of 7?
Yeah I can, so I guess that's a no.
If you had a single base with 21 figures on it then we could probably allow it, as it's a lot of trouble to remove 1 figure! But if they are based in 3's, then it's easy to just remove a base and photo 6 bases.
No worries, just wanted to see if I could've added 1 extra figure. Thanks for the reply.
This looks very cool. I've painted up some Hoplites but I've used little big man transfers on the shields. Would this exclude them as an entry🤔

I'm sure that would be OK. I mean, you could be using different bases, paints, base materials etc.
I don't. Everything comes from Pendraken for me. :^o

That would be fine, no worries.
Great news. Thanks 😁
This may be a daft question but how do I upload pictures to the forum? I see a lot of PC icons that I dont understand and I've only just figured out working media from my phone!

They would need to be hosted somewhere first, so a blog or photo storage account like Flickr, Photobucket, etc. Once that's done you can then link to the image from here, using the image tags. So what you'd end up with is something like:
[ img]www.maravigliasblog.co.uk/entry1.jpg [/img ]

so what if I only have something like Twitter or Instagram and I find the forum layout intimidating/baffling?
Deleted. never mind.
Quote from: Maraviglia on 01 February 2022, 01:18:48 PMso what if I only have something like Twitter or Instagram and I find the forum layout intimidating/baffling?
There'd be a couple of options:
- You could start a Flickr/Photobucket account and put your entries in that.
- You can shrink them down and add them as attachments to the post instead, but the max file size is only 126kb from memory.
- As a final option, you can email them to me and I'll find somewhere to host them here. I'm almost out of storage on our Flickr account though so I'll need to find another option.
Sadly the hosting costs of posting images directly to the Forum are quite high!
Imgur is a pretty easy way to upload them if you don't have them hosted elsewhere, I did a guide here: https://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,20026.0.html though it may be a little out of date. I think it's even easier now, you can just create an account on Imgur, add images from your phone, etc to a hidden post (so only people you link to it directly will see them) then copy and paste the images into the post window here and voila.
Don't need to do all the messing around with tags I had in the original post there anymore.
If you have it hosted elsewhere and you have an "image address" (URL) for an image you can add it via the Insert an image button (besides the YouTube one on the top bar of the post) but you might well be able to copy it from Twitter/Insta directly (right click or long press on the image usually does it though I don't have them so that might just like it instead?).
If you can copy an image directly in it should just work but failing that if you can get the URL and use the insert image button above it should just work.
QuotePossibly a bit of a foolish question, but I'll ask it anyway. I am sure that there will be some absolutely amazing entries, but is there any reason why us average (or worse) painters shouldn't put something in just for the fun of taking part?
Absolutely. I set myself a challenge of having an entry for every category last year which was good fun. Certainly not championship quality painting but entertaining and a good way to have a personal achievement and push myself a bit in my painting to try something new. Not sure I'm going to have the time to do it all again this year unfortunately but might see if I can cobble together a few entries. :)
Direct links from Twitter might work? It'll depend on their external linking system and whether the links remain intact. I know that Facebook's image urls expire, so your image would only be visible for a week or so and then you'd have to go an reinstate the link with the new url.
Thanks for the answers. I've just tried adding a Twitter link and that seems to have worked so I'll wait and see if that lasts or if I need to come up with another plan!
No worries, I've edited the image into that entry post so we'll see if the image remains in place.
Like that Sci-fi entry 8) 10mm Cadians?
QuoteNo worries, I've edited the image into that entry post so we'll see if the image remains in place.
Ta very much. At least this way we all learn one way or another!
QuoteLike that Sci-fi entry 8) 10mm Cadians?
Possibly but honestly I was going more for an exaggerated colour scheme of the "Aliens" marines!
Question: can an entry in the "Army" category contain units that have been entered in the other categories? So, if I enter a figure in the "Single" category, can it also appear in my "Army" group shot?
As that was your first post, Welcome Titivillus :-h
I have certainly done that in the past and no objection has been raised :)

Yep, as Paul says above that's completely fine.

Thanks Paul! And thank you to Leon for the "official" confirmation.
So... what category would a gaggle of geese come under? I'd guess the "other" category but they aren't a single base.
You could try then in the Infantry category I suppose! If they're close together and within the dimensions for the Open - Single Base, then pop them in there.

They are but 20th century or pre 20th century? I haven't checked their birth certificates...

Oh now you tell me after I've got the knife out!
I think geese are older than 120 years so I'll put them in the pre 20th century category if that sounds suitable to all.
And thanks for doing whatever image magic it is you do to put the picture in the post Leon. It is appreciated (and seems to be sticking, so one up for Twitter over FB for links it seems)!
Very nice - I particularly like the basing
QuoteVery nice - I particularly like the basing
Thanks mate, I appreciate it.
Leon, does an artillery limber and piece count as a vehicle?
That'll be fine in Vehicle, or you could try it in Open - Single Base instead?
Thanks Leon, but its two bases! One for the piece, one for the limber!
Quote from: shrimproll9 on 14 February 2022, 04:33:38 PMThanks Leon, but its two bases! One for the piece, one for the limber!
No worries, Vehicle it is!
And that's all folks, entries are closed! The voting threads will go up at 6pm on Tues evening and will run for 7 days. Good luck to everyone who has entered and make sure to place your votes!
Do we get to see how the voting is going before the end, or is it case of 'wait and see'?
Quote from: mollinary on 01 March 2022, 09:01:13 PMDo we get to see how the voting is going before the end, or is it case of 'wait and see'?
Afraid not, votes remain hidden until the big reveal!
voting done - phew . Have to say it was very tricky picking between things, they were all amazing
That's most* of my votes in also. Well done to everyone who entered. Initially, I thought 5 votes was too much. Wrong! A few more votes in one or two categories might have been useful. Alas, photographic quality was decisive when trying to assess quality of painting. In an ideal world, all entries would be judged on a more level playing field if all could have been photographed equally. Such is life.
* Elephant in the Room (has anyone else mentioned this?)? I was uneasy about one category, so I abstained. Apologies if I have misunderstood what a montage is but one entry looked like a montage of 4 images to me. In the interests of "a level playing field" (excluding the Army category, everyone else only got 2) should it be cropped because it is a very good entry, perhaps even a winner and deserves to be considered, imho (but on equal terms with the other entries)?

I'd not picked up on that so I've edited that person's entries.
Voting done. I am absolutely flabbergasted at some of the entries and the great amount of detail in these 10mm miniatures.
The Winners have been announced! https://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,21564.0.html
