Title: WW2 German Colours (help)
Post by: count_zero99uk on 03 February 2011, 06:29:28 PM
Hi all,

Not posted in a bit, not been too well.  Anyway, the main body of my BCK Germans are based up and waiting to be painted.  I was hoping someone could advice some colours.

I have Infantry, Guns, MMG, Mortars, Tanks.

A freind suggested getting them sprayed a basecoat colour but i cant use spray paint so this will on be going on over a black gesso undercoat.

I have a good selection of VMC paints so if sugestions could be made from that id apreciate it.

Many thanks
Brian.

I would use Green Ochre or Middlestone from the Vallejo model colour ranges - as the base colour for vehicles, tanks and guns. For cammo then use a dark green and a red brown - these were field applied so exact shades vary.

For uniforms field grey is good - it is quite a green shade.

There are specific colours for that in the vallejo range, the german field grey with the green tint is 830, from teh top of my head.  The tanks Dunkelgelb base colour has a funny name in Vallejo.

I have some kind of german colour table on my blog, referencing humbrol, RAL and vallejo. it might be of some help.

It's based on an old table I found on the internet, and I am adding Vallejo, FOW and Panzer Aces nominations as I run into them.

Does the webbing need picking out in a different colour?

Coming to this one late - but I did a late war German painting guide a while ago...

Here: http://nikharwood.pbworks.com/w/page/7825471/Late-War-Germans-painting-guide

This in essence:

Late War German painting guide - by popular request!

This is a guide to painting late war campaigning German forces - so looking for a bit of a rag-tag 'feel' - just like my own armies!

Everything from a spray-black undercoat, everything is assembled & bases textured - infantry base-finishing is done *before* painting figures; armour base-finishing is done *after* painting vehicles (I *like* muddy vehicles..!); paint references are for Vallejo Game Color

Once undercoated black, everything gets an overbrush (wetbrush) of Charred Brown

INFANTRY:
Flesh: Dark Flesh, highlight = Dwarf Skin

Uniform basecoats: Desert Yellow or Cayman Green or Black : Cold Grey 50:50

Webbing / pouches etc: variety from: Beasty Brown / Earth / Khaki

Magic Wash (= Klear floor polish / water / brown ink: 50:30:20)

Highlights:
Desert Yellow & Bone White 50:50
Cayman Green & Bone White 50:50
Cold Grey

Camouflage: stippled Catachan Green & Beasty Brown

Metallics: Cold Grey

ARMOUR:
Basecoat: Desert Yellow

Highlight: Desert Yellow & Bone White 60:40

Camouflage 1: Dark Flesh (thinned)

Highlight 1: Dark Flesh & Beasty Brown 50:50 (thinned & stippled within the boundary of the camo)

Camouflage 2: Cayman Green (thinned)

Highlight 2: Cayman Green & Bone White 50:50 (thinned & stippled within the boundary of the camo)

Tracks & detailing: Cold Grey

Magic Wash

Re-highlight: Basecoats & Bone White 50:50 (featherlite drybrush)

Hi guys Niks are very nice another option if you want in Vallejo Acrylics.

GW Black Spray undercoat then paint everything using flat brushes yes flats...

Light drybrush with 989 Sky Grey to lighten the top coats (or ignore this step if u want!)

All normal parts of uniform Field Grey 830, let dry then drybrush with Stone Grey 884 for highlights

Water bottle, weapon stocks Mahogany brown 846

Zeltbahns etc Medium Olive 850

Flesh Base Coat Red Leather 818, let dry then pick out or drybrush with Flat Flesh 70955

Vehicle Base Coat German Cam Orange Ochre 824, let dry then dry brush Dark Yellow 978 (also suitable for desert as a base level then drybrush with Buff 976), Cam Patterns depend if Olive Green then Medium Olive 850 followed by highlight of Golden Olive 857, if you want red brown to then Base of Mahogany Brown  846, then highlight with Red leather 818.  Once dry  highlight with drybrush of Buff 976.
