If you do just one thing whan taking your pictures put you camera on a stand (pile of books will do) and use its timer.
The biggest thing that made my pictures look better (and I do not know why, am sure there is some fancy reason) is using a sheet behind the figure that graduates from dark to light shown below (it the only picture I have of pendraken stuff so far)

Excellent info. There are so many things to learn about making a good looking picture of a 10 mm high miniature, it's not nearly as simple as it looks.
