Title: Sea Mat with Square Grid
Post by: steve_holmes_11 on 09 September 2021, 06:09:45 PM
And today's impossible to find thing.
As ever, I'll stay with the thread, follow up replies and share the best.

Today's "Can you find" is a seascape battle mat inscribed with a grid of squares, looking for a lined grid, not dots for the corners, and fine lines preferred.
The sort of thing sold by the To the Strongest guy (Though his mats are all land oriented).

I'll try and head off the obvious questions.

Why you want squarez, hexagon'z  the best, al the kool kids prefer the direction distance thing?

QuoteA good question, fine fellow.
I intend to play "age of sail" rules with 8 directions for ships and wind.
Placing the ships on hexagonal bases (hat tip to Little Wars TV) and aligning these and the wind on an orthoganal grid keeps things ship-shape.
Nobody wants to repeat Beatty's notorious "All our alignment has gone to sh*t today" message.
Think of the flag officers.

Yeah but Hexes...

QuoteTake it up with Mercator.

What size squares?

QuoteIt should not matter, because application of a set square - a really cool one shaped like a navigator's quadrant - means the ships aren't tied to the gridlines.
6 inch squares is the likely practical limit, otherwise I'll need a very large quadrant. (Hello Sailor).

What about this: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/454759934/battle-mat-deep-blue-sea-case-water?ref=pla_sameshop_listing_top-1&frs=1

QuoteNot bad, but the offset square grid's going to make alignment in one direction more difficult than necessary.
If the same thing were available with a good old honest orthoganal grid, I'd be delighted.
Less of this squares masquerading as hexes.

If anybody can direct me to a suitable product I'll be extremely grateful.

Deep cut studios - they can do all their mats with a grid. And to custom sizes

Perhaps the PVC finish would be good for the sea? I have several of their cloth mats and they are great.
