Title: You can lead a horse to water
Post by: Westmarcher on 07 August 2021, 07:21:20 PM
German coach disqualified for punching horse.

Clearly, she shouldn't have done it .... but I have a certain amount of sympathy. I can't imagine that she could have punched the horse hard enough to really hurt it. After all, she's not exactly Mongo in Blazing Saddles!  ;D ;D ;D

And this is why I have no interest in any "sport" that involves animals.

It's sport, totally boring !!!

That horse is NOT going to jump. Rider's Hysterics not helping at all. A sensible event would allow time to 'settle', ride round fence... maybe go back over another, first... (girl is 'out of competition', anyway)... so help the horse.
Have another go... if horse is 'up for it'... and if horse has 'second thoughts' at last minute... a real WHACK, well timed. with a HEAVY  Stick... not the 'tickler'  she's got... might do the biz. If it works, great, horse knows it CAN do it for another day. If not, forget it... rider and horse 'just aren't working'.
As for 'Coach Punch'... dubious about Press interest. Nobody who works with horses would think that 'punishment', after the event would do any good... horse just 'wouldn't know why'. Possible 'petulence'...but should know better... so probably 'media' crap.

Should have mentioned sooner. Had an Amazon delivery on Friday, driver had just seen a fox cub crossing the road. In the middle of urban Birkenhead, OK about 1/2 mile from the park but .....

I'm surprised at the lack of interest here.
Modern Pentathlon must be the most Horse and Musket themed event in the Olympics.

The final event was actually good watching - although spoiled a little for me by using laser-tag guns rather ones that shoot pellets - and quite exciting.

The rest: swimming - yeah, okay. Fencing - not a good sport to watch. Showjumping - nope, not interested. Especially when you're allowed to wallop the poor animal.

There are quite probably loads more 'urban' foxes, than in the countryside, Ian........Ditto, rats.......Towns/Cities must be over-run with those. ;).....You don't see them, because they only pop out of the sewers at night.....They're not daft.

Easy pickings for both of those species, in the bins, around fast food chains. X_X (and the rest).

Cheers - Phil.  :)

Phil where I live you are never more than 6ft from a rat. Liverpool/Birkenhead import/imported lots of grain and bulk sugar, ideal rat food. And whoops, thought I wuz on "Country File"

Heh! Are you two bored? We're talking about a horse getting punched, here!   ;D

I know. You both thought you were on the Country File topic.

Ian. ;)

I know. ;D ;D
It's quite horrifying !

They were here before us......and they'll almost certainly outlive us, as a species.

Davy.....If you need to know about punching a horse.....

I really don't think you could possibly hurt a horse with a punch...even if you were a super heavyweight boxer.

Hit a horse on the jaw.....and you would almost certainly break all the bones in your hand.
Our old thoroughbred 'Willum' cracked me on the top of my head, with his jaw...years ago.
I saw 'stars' for only the second time in my lfe.
Any harder, and I think he'd have crushed my skull.

Probably explains a lot. :D

Cheers - Phil  :)

That was the point - you're NOT allowed to wallop the poor animal. Apparently, the same horse did the same thing earlier with another competitor so perhaps whoever put the horse forward for inclusion in the 'pool' should've been punched instead. Unless the German coach socked it in the eye, it's hard to imagine it would have been injured. These are not fluffy bunnies - they're tough beasts and if they fall on top of you or decide to lash out they can inflict life changing injuries or worse.

But if you need to wallop a horse, here's how to do it ....   ;D

[btw, Thanks, Phil, for confirming how tough these magnificent beasts are (I was typing the above when your reply was posted)]

I don't know why they don't just combine everything and have competitors on swimming horses trying to "eliminate" each other with fencing foils and laser tag guns. :D

With all of the new (and old) 'sports' they're introducing these days, it could still happen!  ;D

Aye, well, I didn't see anyone rushing to stop her, or admonish her. Yes, I know the coach was thrown out well after the event.

Well, Martyn, watch this and see what you think. There's no chance for anyone to rush to stop her - so quick and no-one near her.
As for the "punch," if this is it ....  ???   We've all probably knocked harder on a door.   :o

That's it? You might punch a friend in the shoulder that hard as a joking response to an insult. All the media reports I saw of this did not make this clear, and did not show the footage.
There may be a case to say that's its a sort of attempt to influence the behaviour of the horse by the coach, and therefore not permissible, but in animal welfare terms this should hardly be a concern surely?

Incidentally, it was very rare that a stick NEEDED to be used at all. Sometimes if a beast was 'acting up' on a road... or kicking /biting, etc. ... or as a 'spark' when 'not keen' to jump... but YOU have other things to do when attempting a jump... 'stick' is an unwanted, additional complication. As 'encouragement' when being 'lazy', drawing a stick from boot and letting horse 'see' it , would be enough to make it think...'Right, better get a move on, then!'
Better to have an unused 'stick' than not... have seen Girls who 'Would Never Use'... getting into difficulties on 'fractious' horses... when 'sight' might have done the trick to 'settle'.
Rather annoys to see professional Race Jockeys 'lashing about'... probably trying to show 'keen'... but NOT going to do much good... to MY mind, maybe the opposite. If a horse is 'willing'...then, it will. 'Flogging a Dead Horse' has always been pointless.
'Battle'... and the terror that goes with it... is another matter. Hence, the horrific spurs and roundels. But, if a bit of 'gouging' was all that was suffered... 'lucky' horse.  :(

As for 'the punch'... 'media c******s'! Thanks for posting Westmarcher. That was just a 'Hey, You, Pack It In!'
