Title: Spearhead 6mm late war Soviet tank units
Post by: pierre the shy on 03 August 2021, 09:51:49 AM
I recently finished some late war Soviet tank units which I finally found time tonight to put up on my irregularly updated blog.....

2 T-34 equpped tank brigades and 2 IS-2 equipped heavy tank regiments:

Apologies for the somewhat badly lit pictures, but I think the units turned out reasonably well.....

Nice crisp pictures of nicely painted models Peter, you need to work on your lighting though :)

Nice work, Peter  :-bd.......(If I need to...I simply alter the brightness of any pics I take, with a specific (old) prog on the PC.)

Cheers - Phil. :)

Thanks for the feedback  :)

I was thinking that the large tank bases look a bit too plain, so I am going to visit my nearest actual hobby shop on Saturday to get some more grass/plant clumps to break the visual look of the bases up a bit, I will also use some other scenic bits and pieces I already have for a bit of veriety.

Yes "quantity has a quality all of its own" doesn't it :) Still, nothing your panzers couldn't handle in that Kustrin game at least Paul!

Splendid work. I'm really tempted by similar, the combined arms tanks & infantry is classic Spearhead/WW2 to me!

I think you're right on breaking up those big bases though, a little visual clutter should make them really pop.

A good array of troops!

For the photos, as well as more light, try avoiding a white background, this can confuse the camera quite a bit and cause the figures to look very dark

I got some grass/plant clumps to break the visual look of the bases up a bit last weekend......just a couple of bits on each base makes a real difference visually judging from the first IS-2 stands that I got done last night.

Also done all the Corps supports and eariler model tanks to be able to cover a reasonable SH sized game from 1941 to 1945.

I'll take some more pics (Not on a white background this time!) once I'm done.

Next need to rebase/refresh lots of Germans for a bit of suitable opposition, among other stuff that I am slowly doing.

Looks good. Couple of suggestions for 'breaking up' 'large' bases? Scratch in track marks? Best when scatter wet, but? Some very small bits of 'mangled' fuse wire as branches. Broken Cat Litter rocks?
I don't like large bases... but suppose it depends on rules... (which I don't use, anyway!). Myself, i prefer little 'clutter' and no 'jungle'.

A while back... OMG...only 5 yrs ago? I managed some decent 1p bases for Desert 3mm armour with tweezerred 'tufts' of dessicated 'clump' shrubs. I was also clarting around, chamferring bases sized to tank... (and drilling / pinning turrets!)... for 6mm. Given up... can hardly SEE the things!  IF I get round to it, have invested in 1/200... with no bases except for 6mm inf!

10mm armour... not sure about basing. Started... but have HUGE stock... so might not bother! Eventually, if I ever get the chance do DO anything!  :o ;)

OK I got the chance to take a few shots of the "improved" larger bases after work today and added them to the blog:

I also used a basecloth to photograph them on so not so glare this time around.

Oh, Pierre, I popped your blog link to Alex Macris (of Modern SH co-authorship & NY Wargames when Arty first wrote SH), he says they're cracking models :)

OK thanks Nathan.

Played a few games with John Moher, the other MSH co-author, over the years and got some pretty good insights into their design methodology.....I know SH etc has its issues for some folks but I have yet to play a game of SH/MSH that I did not enjoy, be it was won or lost.

Yeah, it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's a bloody good game and is pretty much spot on for what it's modelling!

We've had a bit of traffic on the Autarch Discord about it (well, mainly me tbh :D) so thought I'd mention your recent stuff on the way past, as it were ;)

I've spoken to John on email a couple times, and on the old SH Yahoo Group ofc - ace to get a chance to play the game with him!

Don't think John was involved in this particular series of actions, played in 2004 (that long ago?!?  :o) when we played battles based round SPI's 5th Corps boardgame:

https://web.archive.org/web/20181130013415/http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/rbatch/little/fulda.html

but we did play a similarly large game in 2007 with his involvement based around the defence of Alsfeld, but can't drege up the report on that one.
