Title: New Website Launched!
Post by: Leon on 25 June 2021, 10:24:35 AM
Our new website is now live so head over and have a browse: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/

After many weeks of work our new website is now live, and to say 'Thank you' for all of your support during the pandemic we're running a 10% Launch Sale as well!  All of the products previously split between the Pendraken and Minibits websites have been combined into one single site, so there's almost 6000 products to choose from across multiple scales and genres, from 6mm Sci-Fi to 10mm WWII to 28mm Wild West.  Hopefully there's something there for everyone!

The new site is a real upgrade on the old one and comes with a lot of extra features:

All-in-One - Everything on one website, so you can buy and purchase in a single checkout.
Loyalty Points - All orders will now receive Loyalty Points which can be exchanged for extra goodies on future orders.
Wish List - All products can be added to a Wishlist instead, which you can come back to later or even send to a friend/family member ready for a birthday or Christmas!
Reduced Shipping - All decals and flags are available at reduced shipping rates to save you some money.
Order Tracking - You can now choose to have your packages sent on a Tracked service, for that extra peace of mind.
Live Stock - We've got a full inventory system to keep track of stock levels. Please note that we might see some minor errors in this from items sold during the move to the new site.
Out of Stock Notifications - If a product is out of stock, you can ask to be notified when we get a restock.
Payment Options - As well as the usual PayPal we now have alternative payment methods available.
News Page - A new news page with full search function to explore previous releases.
Newsletter Function - We can start sending out our monthly newsletters once again with all of the latest news and releases.

Please note that the website may take a few hours to appear around the world but it should be online for everyone by early Friday afternoon (GM Time).  Anybody that had an account on our old website has had their account transferred over to the new site and you should have received an email with instructions on how to activate it.

One quick thing to mention regarding shipping rates, the new website doesn't run on a 'percentage of order' so we've had to introduce shipping bands instead.  With the rising costs of shipping all over the world these days we've tried to keep these as low as we can but they are a touch higher than previously.  It's actually been difficult to find suitable price points so we've underestimated the actual costs for most packages and we'll take the hit on any difference.  As an example, a small 500g package to the USA would be £8.30 as a Large Letter, but as soon as it doesn't go through the letter slot, it doubles to £16.60 instead!  We're constantly looking for different courier options so we'll reduce our shipping rates whenever we can.  The 'Maximum shipping' levels have remained though so there's no extra shipping to pay once your order passes the £100 mark.

So that's about it for now, if you spot any glitches in the matrix please let us know and we'll fix them straightaway, but in the meantime have a browse and we hope you like it!

We'd also like to say a big thank you to Stewart Leonard at Stormrider Studios for running the old website for so many years.  This upgrade was for extra functionality and to streamline some processes behind the scenes, so no issues at all with his service!  Stewart will instead be looking after our Forum going forward and is also helping us get the upcoming BKC Army Builder ready for launch.

In case anyone is having trouble locating stuff on the new website, we've put together a handy Sitemap split down by scale and genre: https://bit.ly/PenSitemap

Also good news on the Postage. I know we all like as cheap as possible but understand you also can't
subsidize our orders.

Like the new website, good up to date look.

I don't know if you are open to suggestions but thought I would make one for better or worse:

When ordering an army pack there are just lists of the numbers and codes of the various included model types.  If you are not familiar with the codes it can be a bit awkward determining the actual troop types involved and I often end up going backwards and forwards between the army list and the individual entries.  Obviously there are ways around this, such as opening the site in multiple tabs and navigating between them, or just making a note of the codes and looking them up separately.  However, I think it would be really convenient to just click on or hover over the code and display a pop-up showing the individual entry for that code.  As I say, just a suggestion, but it might be worth considering.

Thanks for the feedback and it's something we'll be looking into on this new site.  I don't think we can hyperlink each code within that description, but we're hoping to make new, larger army pack images that show exactly what you're getting in each one.

Seeing the images on the army packs would be handy and save scrolling back and forth to see what you get!

It's remarkable how far we've come in my lifetime.

Started: Airfix at Woolworths, or 2 tube rides to the shop that opens "most" Saturday afternoons.

Now: Fuly automated ordering experience with integrated postage, stock and tracking.

Well done!!!

Looks good!  :)

Leon: You might be right about 'bringing forward' non 10mm ranges. Had never looked at 28mm Mercs/ insurgents, etc. Not going to buy... but...  ;)

Still have 'pleasant' , (for a change!), dreams about being a kid again... going into favourite 'pokey' little 'Model Shop', (Whitley Bay)... with shelves crammed with 'stuff', floor to ceiling. Aaah!
Now... I could probably 'stock' a shop with piles of 'stuff' bought on the internet! LOL! ;D

'Thinking' about an order for 'Arthurian'...  :'(

In the 50's and 60's we always holidayed in Newcastle (West Allotment) for the Edinburgh Trades Fortnight. We also did regular trips into Whitley Bay (by bus) and I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't buy an Airfix kit (2/6d) while down there. Could well have been in the same little model shop.

The new website looks great.

I mentioned the "Loyalty Scheme" to Mrs Orcs, she nearly died laughing at the thought of it.  "Why do you need a loyalty scheme for addicts?"

I di try and give her a "Hard Stare" (as Paddington would), but could not stop myself laughing at her rolling round the bed insensible with laughter.

Alas, the little shoppes got rarer and rarer, with shorter opening hours and longer travel times.

I went from the model shop on the corner:
Sold mainly OO railway stuff, airfix kits, airfix boxes and self asembly sailing yacht models.
Also all sorts of brass wire, tube, plasticard and balse in all shapes and sizes.
They even had a working train set in the wondow.
Penny in the slot and the traiuns would run for a while.

Next stop was the "New Model Army" (Geddit) in Newham.
Minifigs, Skytrex, Leicester Micromodels.
Loads of stuff in the sort of display cabinets you see at shows.
Longer haul by car, with parking a nightmare even back in those days.
I had to catch my dad on a quiet Saturday.

After that the best kept secret East of London.
Navwar (shop in Seven Kings sold ships and the Heroics and Ros minis).
It was a 4 mile hike form home and opening hours were intermittent
(Translation: I walked there several times and never found it open).
It is still there, with a static website - they'll sell you stuff if you send them a letter or phone in an order.
Opening hours are now rumoured to be a regular Saturday afternoon.

[ That's enough rambling: Ed. ]

I must admit to sending a few faxes to Navwar in the past few years, never talked to Tony(?) the owner but I will say that the ships I have bought are always really well cast and always arrive promptly, usually with a small note thanking me for the order......

the hardest part last time I ordered was to find a place that still had a working fax machine. I eventually tracked one down at my local chemist of all places. I explained to the chemist about Navwar's somewhat archaic ordering system and he laughed, but gladly sent the fax off in exchnge for a fiver.....a couple of weeks later a quite wieghty box arrived from Navwar, so the old school tech still works  :)

Just to stay on subject I had a quick look round the new website.....very nice and really user freindly Leon  :-bd

I hear rumours there's computer software that turns your scanner into a fax.
I've no idea how that would help in injecting the message into the phone system though.

I'm contemplating making an in-person visit to the shop when on my annual summer visit to the parents.

Yes I am aware of those programmes Steve, but most require a subscription or have other "hooks" and I only needed to send one fax so it was easier just to fax it in the traditional manner.

As a result I now have enough ships to cover all the periods that I wish to so further orders of 1/3000 ships from me in the forseeable future are extremely unlikely..... I can test Leon's new ordering system instead  ;)

Excellent website and so easy to place an order, even to the extent that I can use the Ideal method of payment, as used in the Netherlands and Belgium. Was even able to instantly use my points as it was a large finish off the First Schleswig War order. Brilliant! (in Fast Show style)

'Pending' means that your order and payment has been received safely and we're working on it.  Once the order is complete and posted out your Status will update to 'Dispatched' and you should receive a confirmation email.

The Loyalty Points are allocated to your account as soon as the order is marked as Dispatched, just so that points are given to orders that get cancelled or refunded.  Keep an eye on it when your order gets posted out and let me know if they don't appear.  Some of these features are new to us as well so I want to make sure they're working properly.

That's an odd one, I didn't think we had reviews activated?  Currently the software only allows reviews on individual products which wasn't much use to us, so we turned it off.  We've asked the web company to add an option for Company based reviews instead.

Just one minor WIBNI (Wouldn't it be nice if).

Bear with me as I'm as poor as anybody else at describing screen events.

Scroll down to a margin item near the bottom (one that's initially off screen like "Red Vectors MDF).
Select your scale and browse the stuff.
Now the margin has reset to the top, so you need to scroll again to browse a different scale of Red Vectors MDF.
It would be nice if the margin stayed put when a selection was made.

I appreciate that this is a very minor issue, and probably requires horrifying amounts of programming to implement.
Different tiled scrolling windows and some sort of status to remember the margin location.

Probably not worth the effort for a minor ergonomic gain.

WooHoo!  I just saved £6.43!    <:-P    <:-P     Did someone mention addicts?

One feedback point:  The Order summary page wanted me to click a big blue button labelled "order summary >"
whereas "Next" would make more sense to me although the ">" was a clue!

My attempt to pay by paypal failed but I doubt that was your site, just that I was already logged in to PP so the payment process couldn't log me in again. Easily solved with a credit card.

I don't think we've got a fix for the sidebar, but you can get straight back to the RedVectors categoris page by clicking the 'breadcrumbs'?  So at the top of the products in 6mm for instance, there's the Home / RED VECTORS / 6mm / Fence text, if you click RedVectors there it'll take you back to that scale page?

Hi Leon

Just adding stuff into my 'wish list' prior to putting in an order and noticed that after adding some Austrian artillery from the Seven Years War range, when I try to add the same size guns from the Prussian list, I get a message saying that they are already on the list. Just thought you would want to know.

Looking good by the way!

Cheers Paul

Just adding stuff into my 'wish list' prior to putting in an order and noticed that after adding some Austrian artillery from the Seven Years War range, when I try to add the same size guns from the Prussian list, I get a message saying that they are already on the list. Just thought you would want to know.

Thanks for the info, I've recreated that here and it looks like there's a strange clash with any products that share the same title.  Any of the SYW 'Tricorn, march attack' codes are doing it as well, so SYA1 and SYB1 for example.  I'll need to talk to the web company about that one as it's quite happy for you to add them to the Cart with the same titles, so the Wishlist should be the same.

Must admit, I had not noticed the breadcrumbs.
Excellent solution which avoids all the perils of mad website design nonsense.
Colour me satisfied.

Excellent, good to hear!

Time for one of my favourite quotes. :)

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary." ― James D. Nicoll

Language evolves.

The evolution of language is often driven by the need/ desire of an "in" group for words or phrases specific to the group.

I suspect the "in" group for the quote above is limited to a group of one.

I remain hopeful that "fripple my galumpholer" enters common usage. :)

the rot set in when we voted by a narrow majority (*) to leave the European empire then based in Rome, but needed to invite in German and then Scandinavian immigrants to do the sword work that we didn't fancy doing.  The Normans  tried to put things right by re-introducing latin derived words  but we didn't like the accent and then had at least two words for every noun.  like home/house, beef/cow,.. We so enjoyed this that it became a national sport to mis-use words like "interesting" to mean something different and thus ensure that no other nation could ever understand us enough to subjugate us again.

For many generations, the linguistic 'in' group was the British Army 'Overseas'! Have you thought about just how much of colloquial 'English' is 'adapted' from India / China / E Med, Service? Probably almost as much as derived from Latin or French! Much has gone out of use... or would most probably be 'offensive' in some way... but it WAS 'colourful'!  ;)

Incidentally, a certiain word that has always been called 'VERY' 'Anglo Saxon',  :o, 'seems' to have most likely been Norse derived! Probably the word in most common usage today... old languages can survive! lol.  ;D

Indeed English has been purloining foreign vocabulary for a very long time and from sources many and varied ... and shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

Leon, would you have a look at the Spanish Civil War pages?

Not my period, so I'm not sure what's going on, but the cover photo for "Republican Infantry" does  not match the contents.

You are quite right.  The figures shown at the Republican Infantry heading are Nationalist infantry, open it though and you do see the two Republican Infantry figures, which I have never really understood as the International Brigades were equipped and dressed in exactly the same way as the Republican Army as a whole and you don't need a distinction.
Look for Nationalist Infantry and they are hidden under a 'Generic' heading which makes no sense to me at all.  The Guardia de Asalto are also under the Nationalists when they should be under the Republicans.
The pages are more than a bit confusing as they are.

I find this whole period confusing myself and we've bounced those pages around so many times over the years I've lost track!  We had them set out as they were originally designed initially, then we had a customer who sent some recommended revisions so we moved them about and re-organised the whole section.  Then we did some more revisions when the Libertad! supplement was done to make it more logical.  With the new site everything should be in the same spot as it was on the old site but I'd need to go and check whether they've all come over properly.

Are there any plans to add the "Add to Wishlist" button to the preview or "Quick View" screens? It's a nice feature but means having to click through to the full product page each time. Though I note now that it does seem to remember what you put in your basket if you revisit the site on the same device, which will make putting together orders much easier (I'll often go back and forth to them over a few days/weeks before hitting the button).

Sadly the Wishlist is a separate feature to the quick view screen so there's no way of adding it there currently. I'll raise it as a suggestion with the website company though and see if it's something that can be added.  We've just fixed a bug in the Wishlist as well, where products with the same name ('Riflemen' or '6pdr guns with crew') couldn't be added to the Wishlist together, so that's a bit better now.  The fix has also improved the Search function so it's easier to find stuff now.

The Basket should remember your products for around 3 days as standard if I remember right.  If you're logged in to your website account though it should keep them in there indefintely.

Yep, that was part of the Wishlist fix, so every product title has the code attached now, so that they're all individual.

Speaking of Navwar.
Backs back in the old manor visiting my parents.
3 miles walk form the Navwar shop, but had visitors during the weekly opening window, so was unable to get there.

Yep, that was another bonus!  The standard Search function is absolutely awful, it's one of the main requests on their company suggestions page so I'm hoping they do something about it soon.  It seems to rely entirely on product titles and ignores code, description, category, sub-category, scale, etc.  So if you type '10mm' into the Search you barely get any results!  Or 'Napoleonics' or 'ACW', etc.

They do have a third-party plug-in called Doofinder but it's another monthly subscription cost and I don't know if we can afford to add that in.
