Title: I will be back
Post by: sebigboss79 on 14 June 2021, 05:00:43 AM
After a long hiatus we have booked our flights back from China to Edinburgh on July 18th.

Looking forward to get back into gaming seriously and start a gaming stream. See you all at Claymore and Carronade. 8)

If not: Waaaaaaagh...oh sorry, wrong scale, game and manufacturer. Carry on, nothing to see here.

Looking good though for the shows all things considered but suppose masks will be mandatory. Maybe Leon and Dave can do masks instead of the helmet.....

Storm Troopers without helmets! All very 'New Order' ... it's not 'proper Star Wars' !!!

Hasn't been since The Empire Strikes Back.

Couldn't agree more ...

Some franchises get better - I think the Alien series has gotten better, after a terrible dip with Alien 4 or whatever it was called.

The new Star Trek movies revitalised an ailing franchise (IMHO) but shame we haven't got anymore on the way

But Star Wars has been on a steady downward spiral for some time. So refreshingly new when they first came out - I even bought the LP (vinyl) of the sound track at the time

Star Wars was TOTAL WOW! when it came out... and played Album to death! Empire Strikes... not so keen and Ewoks put me right off. Watched the next 3 but not interested much.
Star Trek... Original TV was a Wow for it's time, but never got into the films... too many changes to uniforms/ships... and haven't bothered with anything since. Seen odd bits on TV but not for me... yet.
Alien was the first movie that I found really 'scary'! Loved Aliens... but stated to get a bit 'jaded' with later 'stuff'.

Some films are so much better without a sequel:

Fifth Element - probably my all time favourite sci-fi (thank goodness no sequel - although Valerian was close in 'spirit')

Closely followed by the first Blade Runner (shame about the sequel - it was ok but there wasn't that dystopian 'wow'! to it)

Arrival - much underrated and very clever

And whilst we are on the subject of "I'll be back" ... the impact of the first Terminator move has not been bettered by any others in the franchise

And if you want 'creepy' (terrifying) sci-fi - Event Horizon has to be up there at the top of the list.

NB: I have a lot of 'hope' for the new Dune move (fingers crossed)

I've been much more impressed by sci-fi TV series than films, recently. Firefly, The Expanse, Killjoys, Dark Matter for example.

Dark Matter - thoroughly enjoyed - will have to try the others.

I also have to admit (sadly) that I really did enjoy Battle Los Angeles (just so corny) but that is more because I could see an FWC multi-player game in it TBF

I had also forgotten District 9 from my list ... a serious omission - now we have gamed that in 15mm using FWC and it was huge fun - using an AK47 shanty town.

And whilst we are on TV sci-fi - DARK has to be on my list. But is it really sci-fi - Time-travel? I suppose it is.

My first scary bit was Quatermass and the Pit.

Seen it recently and its still scary.

Exactly my thoughts on that film. I even bought some 6mm USMC vehicles - M1A1, LAV-25, Hummvees - but it fizzled out (as usual!)

One of my guilty pleasure, along with Pacific Rim.

No Claymore this year as far as we know so it'll just be the rescheduled Carronade in September.

District 9 - started off making me hope my countrymen were learning to make real movies at last; then turned, like all his other stuff, into a slugging-match (a colourful Afrikaans idiom calls such films skop, skiet, en donner = kick, shoot, and clobber (but more violent). How on earth he got Jodie Foster to sign on for one of his things I'll never understand.

:o

But it would explain the lack of news on that front. I daresay, I disapprove of such.
For the relaunch of my own gaming I will wait for the new website. It would help if my own finances improve by then, hehe.

All great watches with 'Firefly' as fave... at least we got 'Serenity' to round it off in most ways. Annoyed that 'Dark Matter' just got left on a Massive cliffhanger! Waiting for next 'The Expanse' to come out on DVD.... that is how I watch TV progs! lol.
Not 'space battles' but a 'time travelled cop' show with future/present story... 'Continuum'... was pretty good.

My favourite, by a whisker, is The Expanse, largely for it's effort to make the human technology "realistic." No transporters, phasers nor any grav-plating to stick characters to the floor. "Spin the drum"

The alien tech, on the other hand, is the embodiment of Arthur C. Clarke's dictum that "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

As with the others I like, the bonds and tensions between the crew are what makes the series for me.
