The phasing player selects the order in which combat is resolved, as we all know. In South Africa, we've always taken this as meaning complete liberty to select which fight comes first, which second, etc. But a few years ago I was playing against a couple of Viennese gamers who claimed that the correct way to do it was just that the phasing player chose to start on eith the left or the right wing, and thereafter the progress was entirely a series from the first on the chosen wing to the second, third etc.
I'd welcome comments. Out here in the colonies we get out of touch.
We played the same as you. Choose the unit you want to first.
I think thats what all the DBx series says.

Yep, thats the way I played it for years, if youve got his general in the combat line try for a push back on either side before taking him out.
Bloody game of geometry more than tactics IMHO.

Yep you're right FK.
Sounds like your Viennese opponent either got it wrong, was playing a local house rule or was confusing the rules with Medieval Warfare (where the initiative player chooses the side of the table to progress from if i recall correctly).
Personally i never got on with DBR, although spent a good 3 years playing nowt but DBM. Only really pick up HOTT from the DBx stable now.
Well, I don't think Mr Barker would recognise the DBR we play in Cape Town by now; we've eliminated a lot of the inaccuracies and put in quite a few rules to force people to play tactics rather than loopholes. But thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll apply it when my new Cossack army takes the field next Thursday.
