It might not be 'your' period, yet! But listen to the fantatsic theme... then look at the Pendraken Figs!

ARL15
Etc.!
I was so disappointed with the film when it came out...'Woads'!!! lol. BUT it is still pretty ggod as a 'watch' And the score 'sticks'...
Go On... let It Bite! ;D
Na bad
Aye, yu're reet there! Gude tune, an' ARL15 diven't look like glakey nowts! ;D
At least the 'Knights' were in 'relatively' sensible kit... ''Excalibur' !!! :'( :'( :'(
Oh I loved the anachronistic imagery of Excalibur. For some time I've had an inkling to play Dux Britanniarum using Excalibur style 15th Knights as the British, wild crazy savages as Picts and chaos warrior sorts as Saxons .....
Didn't remember the theme music being such a dirge, which is probably why I didn't remember it. As a non-historical re-enactment I rather enjoyed it. My venture into Dux Britanniarum hit a bit of a roadblock when no decent 10mm early Saxons turned up to fight them. Viking and late Saxon proxies just don't cut the mustard for me. They will eventually join the easterners and fight the Sassanids.
For 'Saxons', or whatever peoples you could want 'Arthur' to hammer... it depends on how 'historiical' you want them to be! As you probably know... real 'weapons' or helmets / mail shirts were mainly for 'The Elite'.. with most 'troops' being unarmoured shield/spear 'peasantry'... 'hoping' to pick up some 'loot'!
Some pretty good figs of such in the 'Late Roman' range... or 'Dark Age'... and could mix. Some spears could be cut down and flattened for Seaxes... or clubs! Poses may not be very 'energetic', (I prefer it that way!)... but as most would be 'standing Worrying'... ! ! ;)
'Elite' could have some mailed/helmed figs mixed in. I 'would' avoid 'Long' mail coats, though... possible 'Leaders' maybe.
A lot would depend on paint for clothing/shield designs...
One of the aspects of 'Arthurian' warfare that I like is the relatively low numbers probably involved! 'Thrice, three score' being a very notable 'raid'! You do not need legions or hordes! Hit and run raiding... with scope for some larger 'battles'. 'Arthurian' cavalry makes some tactical movement more 'interesting' than the later 'sheild wall' slugfests! Doubt that 'Firepits' would be used, though! lol.
Raids, ambushes, negotiations 'gone wrong'... Fun Times! lol! 8) ;) We Don't Know!!! ;D
I did quite enjoy 'King Arthur', although thought Clive Owen was mis-cast, and there's a truly terrible, tacked-on wedding scene that really, really should not have been added.

'Excalibur' was obviously a fantasy movie through and through. And Cherie Lunghi makes up for any shortcomings.

Helen Mirren was also amazing, as always.
And agree, the soundtrack album for 'King Arthur' is not bad at all. As is 'Excalibur', 'Gladiator', Conan the Barbarian' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'. Also, the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and the Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr. take on 'Sherlock Holmes'.
For something slightly different I recommend the Chinese films 'Hero', 'House of Flying Daggers' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.
For something very different, 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' . . .
It's soooo tame...
It's astounding;
Time is fleeting;
Madness takes its toll! ;D

I thought the whole point of Excalibur was that it was based on Mallory and therefore was given a suitably C15th feel. The most 'historical' King Arthur I've ever come across was the BBC series back in the late 60s or early 70s. I am hopeless with actor names, but Sir Bors went on to make his fortune playing cockney gangsters.
With a soundtrack that did nothing but illustrate Boorman's crush on Wagner and his lack of understanding of Wagner. Best thing about that movie was that it introduced the brilliant Mirren and Neeson to each other.
Wagner?
"Sturm und Drang"
What more is there to understand?
Hojotoho!
Quite a lot. But a teetotaller on a champagne farm is in the wrong place.
Champagne? Nasty, bubbly, foul tasting stuff. Give me a full-bodied red any day.

I 'liked' Excalibur when it came... but the armour got my goat... I wanted 'historical' dark age... still do. When I viewed it as 'Fantasy'... Fine! Some good visuals... apple blossom... and the eyeball pecking! lol. 8)
A few years later, I rather amazed a young female when I could 'incant' 'The Spell'! Ha! Can't do THAT now... 'mutter, grumble...' ;D

I vaguely remember a 'suitably Dark Age' TV series late 70s, but it was before my first video recorder so unclear. I think there was another series which I did not care for... I thought that the 'Saxons' looked like they were wearing 'Furry Moonboots'! (Remember Them? Lol! ).
There are a couple of possible 'contenders':
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_King_Arthur
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_of_the_Britons
Both may be available from Amazon but one is 'out of stock', so will wait. I imagine that the 'quality' may be poor on modern TVs !
(Just an Aside: But 'Callan' seems to have been sometimes playing on Digital channel 'Talking Pictures' at some silly time in the early hours. I picked up a couple of episodes... from pretty late in the 'run'. Already have all Callan suff on DVD, anyway, but some may be interested in Edward Woodward as the Wargaming Spy! :) :) :) ).
Don't think either of those two are the series I was thinking of. I was still at school (so pre-1971) and it was the BBC Sunday tea time serial, and it was b/w if memory serves. Of course, I could be wrong. I think it was Ray Winstone who played Sir Bors.

Eh? Are you thinking of Robin of Sherwood (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_of_Sherwood)? Winstone played Will Scarlet in that?
Winstone was Bors in the King Arthur film with Clive Owen and Kiera.
The only other Arthurian TV show I can think of pre the 1970's would be The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Sir_Lancelot), which I think I've seen being shown on the Talking Pictures channel on Freeview recently.

Having found a pic of someone in them, I think you're right! Plus 'Excalibur' looks like somebody 'bolted' it together in a garage! Will give a miss! ;D
It also brought almost 'Pythonesk' blood and gore battle scenes to the major film screen - now much emulated with the 'all the rage' splash it on the camera lens approach, we see now all too often across many Netflix and Prime in-house offerings.
If we are going to talk about film themes

Heh, you watch 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' and you'd think it's a complete piss-take of 'Excalibur'. And then you realise that it came out six years before . . .

I Really Should rewatch, sometime!
"How do you know He's a King/" lol !
Sound advice for fig painting! ;)
Most Kids of MY time could quote 'Python' verbatim! For some reason, I have always 'veered' away from 'popular' culture...
when 'it happens'... so, although watched and enjoyed, I never 'got into it'! :o :(
To be continued... (for some reason, I could not add to THIS post ???)
Dammit! Trying to remember the 'term' used for the Indian character in 'Little Big Man', who did everything the opposite way to others! :'(
Now, that is another film that I should rewatch... thought it was great! :) :) :)
"Today is a Good Day to die" ... ... ... ... ;D
Ha! Got it! 'A Contrary!'... i think! LOL! ;D ;D ;D (Not TOO applicable, in my case... but...! LOL! ) ;)
Hmm. NOT a Film Theme, or anything to do with Figs... but decent 'metal' and nice footage! (If I lived there, where ever ,I'd blow the bloody Drone apart!)... ! ;D

From what I can remember, 'Little Big Man' was a VERY good film! :)
If the vid tune... didn't think that I'd posted before your comment... hope that you may like, anyway!

There was the shagging in full plate armour and the hilarious opening scene.
'Excalibur' is as mad as a bag of monkeys, but it has a fine soundtrack album, as does 'Conan the Barbarian', and both films are head & shoulders above all of the other fantasy films that came out of the 80's.
Some 'decent' 'Celtic' ish 'metal here with good vid ,.
