Title: Paint Query
Post by: Sunray on 24 April 2021, 11:27:53 AM
I need a Vallego matt Black shade for a modern submarine in 1/700 scale. Is there any variation in the shade that nations apply?

Point of interest, when did subs go black?

I am pretty sure  the change of colour came with the need for hull materials to resist solar search. But when did this happen?

Most of the Oberon class were matt black as well...Something to do with spening most time underwater rather than on the surface.

I recommend a dark black-gray as it present a nice soft look rather than the stark, harsh look of true black. Plus you can then use black to shade it and medium dark gray for highlights. Here's some examples.
