Title: Name our Building?!
Post by: Leon on 28 March 2021, 04:52:25 PM
One of the weird quirks of our new premises is that the building has never had a name or number, it's always been listed as just Business Name, xxx Road, Middlesbrough, etc.  This did cause a few problems during the purchase as the lack of an identifier made it harder to locate on things like Land Registry and searches.

So, we'd like to name our new building officially but we're struggling to choose a name!  We've got a few favourites but we thought it might be fun to throw it out to you guys and see if you've got any better ideas?  We're looking for a building name only, so something like Corporation House, The Shard, Television House, that kind of thing.  Pendraken House seems a bit pretentious, Casting House might give the impression that we're an actors agents, Draken House isn't the easiest to spell on the phone, etc.  Command House is the current favourite but still doesn't quite work for me.

As inspiration, we're a wargames business based in Middlesbrough, called Pendraken.  We make items in metal and MDF.  We have brands including Pendraken, Minibits, RedVectors, Commander rulesets, etc.  We will be having a shopfront once we get moved in.  It doesn't want to be something too specific to us and our business though, as it'll be an official change of name and could be on the building for the next 50 years.  If we ever move out or retire the name will still be there.

Let's see what you can come up with and hopefully you'll have some betters ideas than us!

I always liked "The Office" as a name for a bar.

I also suggested "CEO's Office", "Downstairs", "Ladies' Loo",  and "Marks and Sparks" as names for meeting rooms at work.

Perhaps I have no sensible suggestions - but when has that ever stopped me?

"Dark Lord's Retreat"
"Milady's Shoe Fund"
"Casting Dwarves Despair"
"Sunderland Supporter's Club"
"Home for the Permanently Bewildered"
"Good enough for now"
"The Outhouse"
"The Hot Metal Place" (Though that may just attract middle aged men with long hair and leather jackets.)
"Next Door  ->"

I just googled metalworking terms ...
"Work hardening house"
"blowhorn stake"
"machinists blue"
"Ball Peen Place"

(I like "Blowhorn Stake")

"The Workshop"
"The Atelier" (Maybe a bit fancy)
"The Guardroom"
"The Mini Barracks"

Oh ... you should have said.

Well then ...

"Not a brothel"
"Should have seen the mess when we moved in ..."
"There was blood everywhere ..." (AKA Techno Towers)
"Funny sounds from the cellar - even though there isn't a cellar"
"Condemned"
"Never got rid of that smell"

"The Studio" (May attract middle aged men with long hair and cameras)

I'd go for Pendraken House

The company I work for (which also starts with a P) has its building named P.... House

Pendraken house also has the advantage that its not a general term, so the new owners may be quite happy to leave it named that way when / if you sell at some point in the future.

Pendraken House sounds good to me.  It explains who you are, Makes it easy for deliveries, even if the address is not quite right.

The name is generic enough for other owners should you sell.

You and Dave have worked hard for nearly 30 years to make the company what it is , so why not leave your mark in the form of a house named after the company?

The only reason not to would be if you were to outgrow this place.

How about 'Element House"?

An Element is a fundamental part of Wargames Armies, rule sets and even could be parts of an MDF kit.

Definitions of Element(s)

elements :- The rudimentary principles of an art, science, etc.:

A natural habitat, sphere of activity, environment, etc.: - to be in one's element; Water is the element of fish.
Any group of people singled out within a larger group by identifiable behavior patterns, common interests, ie wargamers
A component or constituent of a whole or one of the parts into which a whole may be resolved by analysis: - Bricks and mortar are elements of every masonry wall. Or Lead Figures and MDF bases and Buildings are element of a wargame.

Well, being an awkward s-d, it's not a house is it? And if it is an official postal address someone else will eventually have to live with, but you want brand association, how about

Pendraken Building

or

Unit Vector

(as it is an industrial unit. And wargames have 'units'. And Red Vectors is one of your brands.)

I have been to "Houses" that were office blocks, a dance studio, a data centre and a police HQ (the aforementioned Tintagel House) so Pendraken House for a workshop does not seem particularly outlandish.

How about Pendraken Palace instead? :)

Post by: Leon on 29 March 2021, 09:11:20 PM
We've avoided Pendraken House as it's just a repetition of 'Pendraken, Pendraken House' and that doesn't quite read right.  We're looking for something that isn't a direct link to the company name as we'd want it to remain in place beyond our use and is a permanent name for the building/unit.  Draken and it's derivatives are difficult as we get so many people who already call us Pendragon that I think Draken will very quickly become Dragon House and it's muddying the waters.  Similarly the Cornwall / King Arthur / Tintagel suggestions are also linking back to Pendragon and it causes more confusion.

Equally it needs to be easy to spell so that it's easily understood when we're giving someone our address over the phone.  Oubliette and Atelier are too hard to spell for most folks.

Vector and Vulcan House are good suggestions as they're easy to spell and not tied to us solely.  The Ten Mill is tempting although folks might ask where the Mill used to be?!  Anything ...Workshop might lead to some interesting legal letters from certain other companies...

We've got a few ideas which are more personal to us as well, so family names and places which might work.

Are these some easily pronounceable and spelt words - as they're learnt early by English speaking children - and shouldn't suffer from regional accents over the telephone? They're also 'neutral' so shouldn't be an issue due to people's beliefs or prejudices. Then there's the issue of what would be easily known words to people who don't speak English as a first language.

Summer
Winter
Sun
Moon
New
Old

Obviously there are many more.

Quite a few words when spoken can lead to a variety of spellings or meanings... Or, even, becoming garbled due to vocal accents.

Tees -> Tease
Land -> Lund
Redcar -> Red-ka
...etc., etc.

I've obviously been thinking too much on the subject  ;D

Phil, having a bit of a laugh is a great way to deal with it and its obvious you're not 'making light' of it

Not at all. Phil is the Forum's mascot. He is with us, but not like us.

He's like the Gronk to our Strontium Dogs, the Walter to our Judges, the Marilyn to our Munsters,  the Rev Bem to our Andromeda, the BatMite in our Gotham

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AAQKOBFdbr4/XnQZtVsmB2I/AAAAAAAA-7A/SbegRo95Fbgoia5AsW_mxkXRveDEy-fHACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/gronk.jpg)(https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQnM3X8O9w71OVJVDDoWl_bOZZGTaxKSBXC_A&usqp=CAU)(https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/adrenaline-junkies-and/9780133492286/graphics/187fig01.jpg)(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VFtoOtA05qE/hqdefault.jpg)(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fd/Bat_Mite_Cover.jpg/220px-Bat_Mite_Cover.jpg)

Her pervades our lives and our language. I often ask "what would Phil do?" ... and then do the opposite; if I cut myself I call it "doing a Techno"; if I'm watching a quiz show and there's a particularly easy history question, I will say "well that's Lewis Level".

So rather than being an offence, Techno is our touchstone, our tenuous link to some form of reality, and most of all, one of the main ways we get tiny figures. For all these reasons, he should be respected and revered for his sagacity, his experience and his humanity.

At least until my next post.

'Lead Shed' , maybe? Pos future sale 'could' be advertised 'Lead' as in Leader? (That's what property salesmen are for!)  :d

(Maybe already in use, though... have not looked.)

I Do like the sound of 'Vulcan...something', though.
