Title: 6mm Napoleonic Commission
Post by: Duke Speedy of Leighton on 14 March 2021, 10:16:14 PM
Soon to fly off to Australia, this is the first of many batches of 6mm Napoleonics from a certain Sheffield based company, starting with a French starter set for 1809.

Incredibly well done.  I can recall trying to do some Heroic & Ross once and being lucky if I could get three colours on.

So apart from:  natural talent, not sleeping ,  perfect eyesight,  steady hands,  brilliant planning and prep, great care of your brushes and paints and years building up skills,

How do you turn out so much phenomenally good stuff so quick?

These took me at least 10 days, I hopefully won't need to do any more for a while!  @-) :-B

I am going to need 300 ECW horse; any tips on doing them in large numbers?

Some say the Sheffield based company produce 8mm figures, or are at least larger than other 6mm.  How did you find these?  I am matching against H&R foot units [acquired from an online watery auction] so am looking at acquiring the models from H&R as they should be a good size match!

[Does anyone have tanks from Sheffield?  I have read a statement that they are more like 1:200 than 1:300 but have never seen them.  Can anyone comment on what they have observed about this?].

I stick them on painting sticks, c 10 at a time!
2 are bay, 2 roan, 2 dun, 1 black/white/grey and all the others are Chestnut ( coat d'arms horse tones).
Ink
Highlight
White flashes and socks
Bridle with 00 or smaller brush.
Replace eyeballs!

useful; industrial production line.  I assume that did not try any unit standardisation as was tried for Napoleonic units.

That's my ratios for irregular or pre uniformed eras (unless sources say otherwise, Dumas spends nearly a chapter describing D'Artagnan's yellow horse, only for him to sell it straight away)..
French Napoleonics (and Prussians up to 1870) do have formula.
E.G Cuirassiers are only Chestnut with black and then white for musicians.
Dragoons as above but introduce Bays.
Chasseurs and Hussars get the full mix.

(However, by the end of the Napoleonic period there was a general shortage of decent horses on the continent so you can get away with a more mixed look, it was only certain Btitish units like the Bays and the ascots Greys that had not been committed to campaign and kept monotonal horse colours)

ECW the horses would not be uniform. Blazes and socks are easy to add. Remember it's impression you are after, not absolute accuracy. (Will will shoot me down there)

Another batch of Dru's figures, which the keen-eyed amoungst you will recognise as Prussians doubling up as Saxons for 1806-7 to fight the French I have painted preiously. He will base up and I added the appropriate flags where needed. If Covid had not turned my brain to mush as I was trying to match flags to units, and I was so bored in isolation that thankfully, I could happily get on with it.
