Title: Dune 2021
Post by: Big Insect on 11 December 2020, 10:41:48 AM
Really looking forward to this film
I read Dune @ age 15-16 and it has never left me and this on-screen adaptation seems worthy of my own imaginings over the years.

Well I must say it is visually very impressive and certainly looks spectacular.

Looking forward to this being released.
I thought the film with Sting in it was OK
and the mini series children of Dune wasn't too bad.
but I feel this should have the LOTR treatment making three or four films together.

Oh good. Another film with giant, angry worms in it. *

Mind you, as much as I like Star Trek and Star Wars, it's time for something 'new' ..... even though, as a remake, it's not.

*Tremors, Star Wars (at least twice - one on an asteroid & another that opened it's mouth when Leia wore a bikini - who else didn't?), The Mandalorian - anybody think of any more?

So what did you think of the 1984 film version?

Yes definitely looking pretty impressive, I read myself as a young teenager, and "re-read" it on audiobook at the start of the year, hopefully it'll be a good take on it.

Seems there's a bit of an aversion to "new" things these days, people seem to prefer to comforts of the familiar over the challenges of the new. That's why we see so many Marvel and Star Wars and the like churning out new films every year. I'm sure there's a sociological paper in there somewhere, how in troubling and depressing times (like the last decade or two) people tend to prefer things that are nostalgic and familiar. Or maybe it just seems that way because those old favourites get so much publicity and media exposure!

I'm looking forward to seeing this (and Foundation).

I read the 'Dune' novel again recently and was surprised how much it seemed to 'fall off
a cliff' towards the end.   It was a great read up to a certain point in the story (I think when
Paul Maud'Dib becomes 'aware') and then, after this, it almost felt like a second author
was finishing it off.   It really seemed that Herbert was rushing through many of the later
scenes which is particularly frustrating as these are some of the most 'cinematic'.

I'll still watch the film though (and hopefully, it will inspire some tabletop battles...)

So what did you think of the 1984 film version?

It was ok - I think I enjoyed it at the time but it lost some of the epic scale of the book (that was reduced further by the TV series) but it looks like this new film (which has echo's of Blade Runner 2049 in it) will recapture that and more.
I liked the 'gothic imperialist' approach at the time - it would be interesting to see who influenced who, Steve Jackson or David Lynch!
I also thought the mutated Guild navigator in its tank was great - it will be interesting what the new film does to better that (NB: they appear to be keeping that well under wraps) along with the machine augmentations elements etc.

My issues with the '84 film at the time were:
1). Kyle MacLachlan playing a 15 year old hero didn't really work for me - it will be interesting to see if Timothée Chalamet can pull that off
2). the depiction of the imperial sardaukar in PPE/hazmat suits was terrible - the TV series sardaukar in their Papal Guard berets was even worse !!!
3). the creepy superimposed (painted on the film) glowing blue eye effects was ridiculous

On the overall storyline - I agree that it is heavily redacted or concertinaed towards the end of the book but I remember an interview with Frank Herbert years ago, where he said he was under massive pressure from the publishers to give them something for a specific deadline. I think he'd have liked a lot longer to finish it off.

I must admit I was never a huge fan of the subsequent books - but maybe it was because the original novel was so fresh and new in its concept that it was a hard act to follow.
IMHO it was the 1st true "space opera"

The new film will no doubt be helped by the use of Pink Floyd in the sound track  :D

I read the first three books when I was off work with bronchitis and heavily medicated--went utterly mad.

Yes Ian - but they are using a new version of 'Dark Side of the Moon' as the theme song for the trailer - got to appeal to a certain generation of viewer (me!)

I must admit that the original Dune was something I just didn't 'get' and turned it off after about 20 minutes.  I've never gone back to it so it'll be interesting to see what this new version is like.

What do you think of his sons books bringing more of the universe Alive?
Some of the pre Dune books are good reads.
The one where (Spoiler Alert)@@@@ they are based around the Universe
By the old couple dragged on a bit.

Same here, but I may have lasted a little longer. I do remember seeing some truly terrible special effect shot that put me off. (Can't remember what now)

Well, a Hanz Zimmer-produced cover of "Eclipse".

Classy cast. Jason Mamoa and Dave Bautista are always good.

It did seem to get a strong but mixed reaction between those positive and negative.  I enjoyed it and was positive about it, given the technical limitations they had.  I have never read the subsequent books or seen the TV series so cannot comment on them but I will read with interest here comments from people on the new film.  I suppose the rapid advance in technology gives more opportunity to remake old films but I wish they do more new and original ideas.  FURY, love it or hate, was at least new rather than retread.

But it's Dune!  :(

Never could get into it. Didn't like the books and slept through most of the film.
It's on my "give it a miss" list, but whatever floats your boat.

I'd rather see Dorsaii, Stainless Steel Rat or even Conan as a series.
I hope you enjoy the series.

A Conan series could be good, especially if they went more in line with the warrior and theif in the books rather than the half naked Arnie style brute.

I'm still convinced that "The Scorpion King" is the best Conan movie yet made.

I tried re-reading some Moorcock recently. Didn't really stand up for me as it did when I read him in the 80s.

Having said that, a TV series on Elric or Hawkmoon would ... ... probably be mucked up by a TV company.

Well ... I went to see the new movie yesterday (Saturday 23rd).

It is IMHO a master piece.
Beautifully shot - well cast - and almost 100% true to the book - what is not, is some small stuff that is taken out. Which is the way I like adaptations.

The technology is well handled, and is close to the book - and the politics/religion are so well imbedded in the plot line that you feel totally immersed in this plausible universe.
We've not met the Padashar Emperor yet (or the Guild Navigator), but the Baron Harkonnon is a more ominous, and realistically powerful, a menacing and brooding presence, than the raving lunatic in the original film.

Well worth seeing and I shall be looking forward to Part 2 and actually rewatching Part 1 ahead of the release of Part 2.
They have done Frank Herbert proud - in my view.
