Title: Movie Viva Max
Post by: Sunray on 05 December 2020, 07:53:09 PM
My adult daughter has indulged in our traditional Boxing Day war game for many years.  She is now adroit at finding me Cold War era 1/144 aircraft.

This morning she watched a comedy movie Viva Maxc!,  starring Peter Ustinov with a plot involving a Mexican infantry company (late 1960s era) "capturing" the Alamo. And the response of the local Police Dept/National Guard.  She suggested it might be the basis for a light hearted wargame down the line.

Mexico came in on the Allied side in WW2 and thus got a heap of US kit - tanks, armoured cars  still around in this era  I am assuming M3 Stuarts, M8 Greyhounds etc?  Also a few bazooks.

Texas National Guard ? I don't want to overarm the Texans. And I will need a bit of 10mm real estate of downtown San Antonio...

IIRC, Peter Ustinov was suitably over the top.

And the film also starred Sean Astin - perhaps better known as Gomez Addams from The Addams Family.

Cheers,

Geoff

A quick check on Amazon reveals that the film co-stars the wonderfully named Pamela Tiffin

Pretty sure he's better known to half the planet as Sam Gamgee from LotR :)

D'oh!!

Sean - John. It's nearly the same.

Perhaps I need a new pair of glasses. I never even noticed (but recall I did make sure I had his surname right).

Indeed!  In the movie, a busload of "militia" do indeed crash in on the action.
I was in the  US "gun belt" (overlaps with the Bible belt), some years ago on a lecture tour about the N Irish peace process. I stayed with several "southron academia" and was amazed at the amount of guns in private ownership.

Vaguelly remember watching and quite enjoying a Long time ago... but not clear on how it went.

There was a film... but don't think it was Max (?)... that involved someone stealing an M7 Priest from a USA depot and driving around to do ... 'something'... Long time ago, so don't remember much!

Could be an ok premise for a 'bloodless' game?
Somebodies nick 'Some sort' of tank', taking a VIP 'hostage' so that heavy weaponry not an option.
Series of 'skirmishes'... Car roadlocks, Trucks ditto. Bulldozer... etc. with tank using power and agility to get through. Option of main gun ff personnel clear!
Hazards.... slopes/bridges, breakdown, the usual.
Can 'they' get away before fuel out?

Modern Choppers, Drones etc might spoil... so maybe not TOO modern, or ignore.

Just a thought?
