Title: The Liberator on Netflix
Post by: Steve J on 15 November 2020, 04:51:12 PM
I've just finished this 4 part series on Netflix and found it very good. Based upon a book by Alex Kershaw, it follows on man (Sparks) through Sicily, the Italian campaign, Southern France and Germany. Imagine a sort of Band of Brothers type film, but made to look like a cartoon. They've filmed it and then some how converted it to cartoon style, as you can with 'photos, which works really well IMHO. Worth checking out.

I started on La Revolution, but got distracted with other series courtesy of my wife :D

I thought The Liberator was ok.

The style reminded me of Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings

I've been watching, and enjoying, The Queen's Gambit about the world of chess

The Queen's Gambit is on our list, but too much choice at present!

Sound a lot like The Big Red One.

On my list to watch but at the moment I am taken up with Lovecraft Country which is alarming for all sorts of reasons

We binged that a few days ago. Pretty good.

Agreed re Queens Gambit - very entertaining - the period fashion etc was very well done.

I also 'did' Barbarian ... it was ok but I wouldn't recommend it. Cavalry with stirrups in a Classical movie is always a no-no for me.

Dark is however well worth the trouble to watch - all 3 series - a very different take on time travel.

Might be difficult to find  extras who can ride without stirrups I suppose

And health & safety, probably.

With modern CGI & editing it shouldn't be a real issue and a lot of the scenes where the stirrups are visible are static or at a slow trot. So no major H&S issue. Just lazyness.

But you also have romans with swords slung on their left-hand hip and on baldrics ... but I suppose it is entertaining. The Romans speaking Latin and the Germans in dubbed English is an interesting touch.

How good was the dubbing ?

Reasonable Ian

But DARK is the same - German but overdubbed in English. This technique is getting much better these days.

NB: I wouldn't bother watching the 'Aliens' series on Netflix - just terrible IMHO - a sort of English version of District 9 without the Prauns ... watching it will just make you realise how short your life is and that you wont ever get that time back!

I prefer watching them with subtitles, but SWMBO hates them, so some series I watch on my own to overcome this issue. As Mark says, the dubbing is getting better these days and isn't so obviously out of sink with the mouth movements.

Dark is good but hard to follow, mainly due to my watching it in fits and starts.

Out of sink = down the drain.

Mea culpa Alexander and well spotted. My brain was obviously not in gear (or sync) when I posted this this morning!
