Hi
I realize that I am rather late to the party but I have just got around to watching '1917' on DVD. Is is just me who thought that the story/plot was, to put it mildly, ridiculous, or am I missing something?
Disappointed.
Cheers Paul
Nope. With you on that one.
Very disappointing.
Nope - definitly ridiculous.
Loved it.
A rollicking "Boy's Own" adventure story with proper period trappings, beautifully shot and well paced. Some good set pieces too.
I've not seen it yet but I've been waiting for it to appear on Sky. We know someone who worked as a consultant on it, training the extras and stuff, and he said that the attention to detail was excellent. I guess it'll be like Saving Private Ryan, a plotline that would never happen in real life but it makes for a good story.
I thought it was rubbish, to be honest.
I also only saw this recently and have to say I'm 50:50 on the film.
The period detail was really good but I did find the plotline a step too far.
If the High Command wanted to stop the attack I would have found it much more believable if the two privates were ordered to escort one the staff officers (or even a fresh faced 2nd Lt) across no-mans land to stop the attacking force. There could have been plenty of scope for tension and drama between them to make the journey interesting.
I enjoyed it, but think it should have been "1916" no shell holes or rain.

It might shorten the movie somewhat fsn, unless the aircraft runs into this chap and his flying circus on the way to drop the message......

That's a "Fly the Eagles to Mordor" solution.
Sensible, but no story.
