Hi,
I'm new to 10mm war gaming. I'm starting with the WWII Western Desert campaign (Operation Crusader, give or take a year). This was the period I liked as a kid, so it's a homecoming of sorts. I'm looking at Blitzkrieg Commander IV or Spearhead for rules. So, I'll be asking questions and sharing on the forum.
I live in the Bay Area. I also play 28mm War of Spanish Succession.
Cheers,
John
That's, like, so cool, dude! (Have I got the idiom right?)
Welcome John! Not a period I've got into yet myself but there's some fantastically knowledgeable people here on all things WW2. Looking forward to hearing about your progress.
Welcome John,
I have far to much stuff for the Western desert. Beware the equipment available in the early part of the western desert changes with stunning rapidity, as do the colours of the vehicles.
Welcome to the forum John....
Hope your Western Desert project goes well.
Peter
John,
Where in California? I am near SF in the East Bay.
Welcome aboard!
Some interesting and diverse units in Op Crusader (Sikhs, NZers, Poles, etc and colourful Italian units) - Have fun!
Welcome Jerboa :-h
I'm assuming from your nickname your a fan of 7th Armoured Division ;)
It's a great period and place to game, my main interest is December 1940 - February 1941, before the Germans turned up and added yet more kit
We've played a lot of Spearhead, in 6mm, but not BKC
Welcome to the forum, John. :-h
Cheers - Phil :)
Welcome Jerboa.
The Western Desert is one of the few WWII theatres I don't game but it may just be a matter of time. :(
Crusader is a good choices. Matildas, Crusaders, nippy Light VI's. Italian 11/39 and Ab40's. Great stuff.
Normally I ask people to post photos. In your case, please don't because I don't think I need the temptation. :P
I assumed your name was Jerry and you liked large constricting snakes.
Welcome on board John and a perennially fascinating campaign to me as it was the first theatre we were interested in as kids,, possibly due to the need for minimal terrain!
Who is letting damned colonials in ? Hi John I'll get a lot nastier ;)
Welcome.
Early to mid Desert War is a great period, I've managed to collect forces in both 10mm and 15mm somehow.
What rules are you using for WSS?

I'm in Alameda, so we're neighbors. I joined the SBGC, too. They seem very active.

I've painted all of my WSS during the pandemic, so sadly, they haven't been on the table. I'm keen on 'Die Fighting II' for rules, but I also have 'Beneath Lilly Banners.'
John, welcome to the forum - as I say to many newcomers, the forum is warm, welcoming, well read, well informed, well intentioned and .... on occasion, well weird :)
I've played Spearhead and BKC and prefer the latter ... YMMV!
In WW2 terms I'm more at home in The Great Patriotic War or in North West Europe but the Western Desert is a fascinating theatre. If half the tales told by family and family friends who were out there are true I'm amazed the Allies achieved anything!
Hello and welcome

Thanks, Die Fighting is new to me, but seems interesting. One of our group is collecting 28mm WSS and isn't sure on rules yet. So I will pass these suggestions over to him.
Hi Jerboa, welcome to the Forum!

Fred,
I just figured out that your web page is http://www.kerynne.com/games/index.html. Very inspiring. I'm responsible for more than my fair share of your recent hits. I assume you play BKCIV. I may be asking questions.

Indeed it is, although it is rather neglected these days. But glad to hear you are finding it useful.
We've played some BKC4, but I tend to fall back to BKC2 as that is the version I have played most, so in a middle of a game those are the rules I tend to remember.
Fred,
I found your comments/comparisons of M-3 Stuart (Honey) models interesting. I 'need' a whole regiment of them. Which Pendraken model did you compare? Were they resculpted on 2018? Your 'squashed' pics don't seem to match the current pics.
Thanks,
Jerboa
Those comparisons are quite old, certainly before the re-sculpt
Let me have a look if I have any of the newer PD Stuarts
The new Stuarts certainly do not have that squashed look.
Am I right in thinking the Honey 'mid-war' turret is appropriate for 1941-1942 N. Africa? Doesn't seem right to be counting rivets in 10mm.
Cheers,
Jerboa
Why not I do it with 6m !

6 metres? The mind boggles! ;) :D
As for the turret issue, personally it wouldn't bother me if it was 'wrong' in terms of dates etc.

6 minutes, silly.

Tend to agree. Finding the right Sherman variant is the path to madness.

If you have the mid-war ones then definitely use them. If you are looking to buy some then I would go with the early war one which has rivets - not least as rivets always look good on a tank!
With Stuarts the US army used almost exclusivly the M5 in action, the Brits used the earlier M3 models, but had the last mark M3 (M3A5?) with the M5 turret. Think the French forces followed the US model.
Shermans - US tried for M4A3, although they used most models, British had M4A4 and M4A1. Soviets and USMC got the Deisel ones - M4A2? althogh later the marines got some petro; ones as well.
Reason for the split is pure logistics - they all had different engines so as far as they armies wanted one model. It never worked.
Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Chris, I hope you're safe form the fires.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm posting updates on my WWII Western Desert project in the painting section.
