Title: the Oxford Carrier mdv58
Post by: Sunray on 20 July 2020, 11:29:02 PM
It was a surprise when the Oxford appeared in the Pendraken stable (MDV58).  It missed WW2, but  was used as a prime mover in Korea. Usually with 17lb gun, or indeed even the 6lb pounder.

Was it ever used as an APC ?  I ask because its cousin the Cambridge Carrier AFV401  had a brief career in that role, until the 432 and the Sarry came along.

If the Oxford had a brief APC role, could it carry a section ?

Dont think it's big enough to take 8-10 passengers. It did see service in Korea but towing 17pdr, as although in the Btn OOB they dont seem to have been sent, the AT platoon seems to have been used as an extra infantry platoon. Presumably they carried the mortars and MMG's. The Cambridge does not seem to have been taken into service at all. Oxfords lasted until 1963-4, and many scrapped had never seen any service.
