After two rounds and the loss of both flagships, we decided the game should be postponed until the rules were edited a bit.

Sounds like it - perhapes start with a slightly smaller action as well 70 odd deradnaughts is a fair old tonnange. Your own rules ?

Yes, own rules (first draft). But don't be misled - We had only six and five dreadnoughts respectively, with two destroyer groups, four and six cruisers, two battlecruisers each, and a Zeppelin (my submarine never turned up). I'm not quite gaga enough to try a real Jutland as a first game.

Try the Battle of the Falkland Islands - a little bit smaller.

How about the Battle Cruiser action, the so called 'run to the South', or Dogger Bank.  Both manageable affairs.
