Title: GC for NHS
Post by: SV52 on 09 April 2020, 10:10:37 AM
Good idea?  I think with the awards season approaching a George Cross to the NHS would be appropriate, what they are doing certainly fits the criteria.  The NHS would carry it but it would be awarded for all those in harm's way in the current crisis.  A round of applause is all well and good but this is a bit more tangible.

I totally agree !

Someone's probably already done it, but I was only thinking this morning of petitioning No. 10 for medals for all the NHS staff.....And others in the 'care industry'.

You've got my vote, SV52.  :-bd

That was my initial thought, Ian....Not quite sure how you 'start it off'.

I think you and SV52 know...a LOT of the forum would be straight in to support a petition 'of that ilk'.

(I MUST remember to go out and clap, this evening....Though the distances between all the properties around here would probably mean we wouldn't hear anyone else.)

Cheers - Phil  :)

Just trying to check to see if I'd signed it and I think there may be two or three (or twenty - it's hard to tell!) other petitions to the same effect.

Ah well, more the merrier!

Signed just a few minutes ago then Change.ORG hassled me to use Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter none of which I use. There wasn't a no-thanks option. A bit annoying.

I think proper funding would be better than trinkets, how many beds can a GC get?

A GC won't restore the broken morale caused by years of under funding. I understand the sentiment, but this is pure tokenism. People are dying because governments have chosen to give tax cuts rather than fund the NHS.

Ian

My son works for Tesco and has turned out for work every day since this started, he and his colleagues are still having to put up with crap from arseholes blaming everyone for shortages but themselves.  As far as he's concerned he thinks he deserves a medal.

So you can try to politicise this as much as you like as long as you put your cross in the right box on the ballot paper.

OK Moderator you can now close this down as it will inevitably end up a political football and this forum is not the place for it.

A medal awarded for "acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger" is not a 'trinket'.  I am sure the people of Malta will be dismayed to hear that the George Cross has now been so devalued.  On the other hand, I think, perhaps, that the advice to keep politics off the forum should be followed.

Here is the place to start a petition if you want to attract serious support.  https://petition.parliament.uk/

Go to the bottom of the page to start a new one.  If you get sufficient signatures parliament will have to debate the proposition.

Shall I let you start it?   Something along the lines of 'On behalf of the People of the United Kingdom, the National Health Service should be awarded the George Cross to bear witness to the courage and devotion of all NHS staff during the COVID 19 crisis 2019 - 2020'.  The precedent for it is the award to the people of Malta during WW2.

Edit: just checked and there doesn't appear to be one.

I've done that.  This is the link.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/315451/sponsors/new?token=Tb3yCPceD4eQAV-9DUFS

It won't go live until it gets five signatures.  When it reaches 21 it will frozen and further signatures will not be possible until it has been checked and passed to proceed.  I suppose this is to stop the loonies wanting to know about UFOs and similar stuff.

Petition your MP too and, since it was her father who instituted the GC and had it awarded to Malta, also petition HM The Queen.  Not sure how you'd do the latter but there is a Royal web-site.

Oh dear.  It has been rejected already on the grounds that somebody else has already petitioned for a new medal to be awarded to the NHS, emergency services and military involved in the COVID crisis.  Not the same thing at all but there you go.

Cancel my last.  It seems the rejection was somebody else's similar petition which was submitted after mine.

I've just received an email to say that:

"S***** H***** has supported your petition – "Award the National Health Service the George Cross.".  You have 1 supporter so far.  If 5 people support your petition we'll check it to make sure it meets the petition standards. If it does, we'll publish it"

So here is the link again.

Hi folks, an update on the petition's progress.  I received this today:

   Dear William John Cook,
Your petition is nearly ready to go.
"Award the National Health Service the George Cross.".
5 people have supported your petition so far. We're checking your petition to make sure it meets the petition standards. If it does, we'll publish it. This usually takes a week or less.
Once your petition has 21 signatures it won't be able to add more until it's been checked. So, please wait until it's been checked and published before sharing it with lots more people.
Find out how we check petitions before we publish them:
https://petition.parliament.uk/help#standards
Thanks,
The Petitions team
UK Government and Parliament

In due course, if you support the proposition, please disseminate the link as widely as you can.  Thanks

Thank You HMtQ! Well deserved to ALL... and especially, to those NHS staff who died or who may have had their lives altered by Their Care for Others!

But, already 'knocked off', 'Headlines' by Football and Wimbledon. Such has always been the way of things.  >:(

NHS... 'YOUR' efforts have helped to make it possible for such to happen. Some made greater sacrifices. So... Be Proud of Your' Collective' 'Bit Of Tin' YOU cannot wear it... except Within Yourselves. And, It ain't finished yet, by far.

Thank YOU, NHS!  :)

(And, if it does 'pi** you off, a bit... YOU are the ones doing 'The Bug Hunt'...and doing it Well! So, nail the figurative 'tin' to the wall'...
