Title: my painting challenge for 2020!
Post by: petercooman on 31 December 2019, 01:04:46 PM
Going to start the new year and the new painting thread with a plan!

this is what i have open: (adjusted a bit to account for doubles-leftovers from boxes-sprues)

the tally : about 5753 models are painted and 2340 models are still waiting for love.

all the projects:

1) epic orcs
2)epic space marines
3) warhammer fantasy undead
4)warhammer fantasy orcs and goblins
5)  warhammer bretonnians
6)  D&D temple of elemental evil game (1/10th done)
7) D&D tomb of annihilation game
8 ) d&d mad mage game
9 ) mice and mystics/reaper mouselings (prepped and mounted to bases)
10) 40k dark angels (dark vengeance starter set)
11) 40k chaos (dark vengeance starter set)
12)40k imperial guard
13) LOTR high elves
14)LOTR goblins
15)napoleonic waterloo British/Hanoverians/prussians
16) napoleonic waterloo french
17)peninsular british (93 models)
18)peninsular french (77 models)
19)peninsular spanish guerrilla (53 models)
20)walking dead minis (84 models)

(for some reason i have no scenery left doing so this one can go, probably a miscount
21)various scenery (1model)

So i have 20 various projects open to work on, but there are specific models i want to get finished:

1) alll my walking dead minis so i can play through the entire campaign (84 models)
2) 1 to 3 complete d&d board games. (at least one to keep me going on them) (between50-150)
3) forces for the peninsula to play sharp practise (french 77, british 93, spanish 53). No problem if these are not all painted, as long as i have enough for a game!

And the overall tally should be 600+ models again, wich is about 50 per month.

Numbers have been dropping each year, but that is mainly through a shift from small scale stuff to 28mm models. As long as the painting rate is as good as the grow rate of the mountain, i can keep it in check  ;D

2017: 1001 models painted
2018: 767 models painted
2019: 654 models painted

Curious to see if i can pull off the napoleonic one, as that is a big chunk, and not an easy one!!!

This I find a real motivator, do enough from both sides for a game. Then you want to add a few more units, then a few more, ...

Yes, having games with them always makes you want more! Best motivator to get you going. Maybe that's why some projects remain 7nloved for do long, nobody to play them with!

A good plan and as others have said, once you have enough painted to game both sides, then you can add to them as and when needed.

My painting challenge for this year is to tackle the 14,600 points worth of Warmaster figures I've not yet done. Considering I've done no painting at all for 2 full years, it's going to be interesting to try to get my mojo back!

14,600 points worth of Warmaster figures .... Wow! ............ is that all? :)

Lots to paint then! As one who's mojo has been severely eroded over the past few years by "The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to" as Bill the Bard wrote, I'm finding little and often works better for me than trying to discipline myself to commit big chunks of time to completing things - YMMV!

I "got stuck" 2 years ago painting 8 units of cavalry for my Albion army. I hate painting cavalry but equally don't like to skip over things.

My fault then ... I wrote the original Albion list :)

Still hoping the "Balori" see the light of day sometime, Leon!

Got the first finished model of the year, and a big one!

Made the 2d map of the prison (for the walking dead game) into a 3d layout, using cardboard, lolly and match sticks, plaster and lots of time!

after construction

painted

doors are all separate and can be opened

So adding 1 (but a big one out of multiple parts  :P) model, brings the total to 1 model painted!

Also received some stuff i bought with some more holiday money:

MDF houses that fit on the woodbury gaming mat for the walking dead, and farm animals to populate my table. I have been looking at this kit on crisis but ran out of money there  :P , but i added it this time to bring me up to free shipping ;)

Took me 6 days or so, taking it really slow so the cardboard walls wouldn't warp. Coating them in gyproc  ABA -joint mix actually made them pretty solid!

Now the only thing left is to find a suitable trapdoor piece to put at the top of the tower under the roof, or a ladder . Currently no way of getting in there.

With a big delay, i finally got the first non-scenery models painted for the year.

7 survivors for the walking dead, incuding 3 doubles that will be going up for sale once i get all my doubles done. With these being for sale, i ended up putting extra highlights on the lot, wich almost doubles the time spent painting these. So really not off to a great start this year, but i hope the next ones will go faster!

So adding 7,models, brings the total to 8 model painted!

the tally : about 5761 models are painted and 2333 models are still waiting for love.

Since i have been slacking at the start of the year, and there wasn't much improvement, i tried to do the same as ladt year, and have a change of scale. Painted up a big batch of epic space marines, and now half way through basing them up.

detachment of space marines:

scout marines + some hq stands (black one is an inquisitor)

assault marines
(https://i.imgur.com/1QGZwpU.jpg)

i also redid the bases of some of my older stuff to make them all the same (but the minis don't count, as they were already painted)

So adding 160,models, brings the total to 187 models painted!

the tally : about 5940 models are painted and 2154 models are still waiting for love.

I have just a tiny bit of the yellow paint left over, that i might use for a drybrush on the vehicles, or save in case i ever get a second thunderhawk :D

In my mind...I still think  I'm in my mid thirties.....(That was when I was described as the oldest 14 year old in the country.)......Unfortunately my body laughs hysterically at this, and reminds me all the time that this isn't the case.  :(

I think I've said before...When I reached 30....I didn't really feel any different to when I was 20......When I reached 40..No difference to 30.....The same when I reached 50...no difference to 40.
Unfortunately, by the time I reached 60.....So many 'wheels' had fallen off, I felt sodding ancient. :D

Hey all!

Just finished a batch of mantic scenery panels!

Don't know what to make of it for the tally, so just counting the bigger pieces as models painted.

So adding 35 models, brings the total to 405 models painted!

Not counting these towards my overall collection, but adding the recent buys to the 'to paint' pile gives me:
the tally : about 6123 models are painted and 2224 models are still waiting for love.

Hope i can get on more regularly from now on!

With everything going on, i thaught i'd paint them with those pesky blue gloves!

Thanks, Peter.  :)

If you can get hold of a 'mid-range' shade, try using that as a background instead.
A white background tends to 'fool the light meter' in the camera (or phone) and underexpose the subject.

Give it a whirl. ;)

Some bits and bobs painted for an online competition

ettin from d&d (not for the competition, just wanted to paint him up)

prussian landwehr in clogs with hayfork
(https://i.imgur.com/6MTZ6Hi.jpg)

dark angels chaplain

Zure on aerijin, from the tail feathers boardgame
(https://i.imgur.com/jcTBb5n.jpg)

So adding 5 models, brings the total to 553 models painted!

the tally : about 6250 models are painted and 2146 models are still waiting for love.

So, four models counting as five.

It's because:

The Ettin has two heads.

The landwehr chap has a large pitchfork.

The chaplain has a front and back.

The flyer is a rider and mount.

Votes please.

it's because the bird and the mouse are separate characters with their own separate cards that can be changed, so each mouse from the game can ride on all birds from their side.

Soon got shown the error of my ways and moved into 6 and 15mm figures.

Star saga scenery painted. Numbers for 2020 are done! And everything is readily painted to play some/most of the star saga campaign over the holiday break!

So adding 36 models, brings the total to 634 models painted!

the tally : about 6331 models are painted and 2084 models are still waiting for love.

So this means half of my challenge for this year is done!

my challenge was:

"So i have 20 various projects open to work on, but there are specific models i want to get finished:

1) alll my walking dead minis so i can play through the entire campaign (84 models)
2) 1 to 3 complete d&d board games. (at least one to keep me going on them) (between50-150)
3) forces for the peninsula to play sharp practise (french 77, british 93, spanish 53). No problem if these are not all painted, as long as i have enough for a game!

And the overall tally should be 600+ models again, wich is about 50 per month."

So numbers wise i did good, but with not being able to game this year due to you-know-what, priorities have changed. I mainly painted what i wanted instead of the usual 'i need/want this for next game'. Not really a problem, this just means i painted some stuff that i always pushed back because i had other pressing needs.I believe next year will be mostly the same, with me focusing on stuff for my solo games instead.

Thanks! Funny story actually. was looking through my copy of tail feathers not so long ago. (the mice and mystics game with the bird riiders) In that game when two bird riders go base to base, they lock into a death spiral while they tussle mid air. The token to show they are locked in a spiral was the inspiration for my shield design. I thought, would be cool to have that as a badge of honour on my champions heraldry. Something like "sir Francois of Couronne, who emerged victorious after being locked in a spiral of death with a drake"

the token here on the right:

I am NOT counting how many unpainted figures I've got.....

There's a very big box full.

I DO want to get the paints out again, at some stage...But as I've said before....I'm not sure which end of the brush I'm supposed to hold, anymore.

Cheers - Phil ;)

step 1 Start with painting blood red.
step 2 check your hands veery five minutes. if nothing repeat step 1 and 2 , if it looks like yet another trip to emergency room, turn brush around!

That is.a lot of figures!

I'm quite interested in your counting method - especially as you seem to count artillery crews and guns separately. Do you count bases, and then what is on the base? I've thought about listing my figures a couple of times, but each time I start to think about it, I start over thinking the whole categorisation thing, and then don't end up doing anything!

Ah! I count guns and men separately. That is because I do not have a fixed number of gunners per gun. A 2pdr may have a crew of 3, a 17pdr 4 and an 5.5" howitzer I think I put 6 on.

I don't count bases as the number of figures per base varies.  Mortars tend to be groups of 3 bases - 2 with 3 figures and 1 with an added command figure. A British section is a Bren base (3), a command base (3) and a rifle base (4).

What I do is I put together a project and work out how many packs I will need. For example if I want 2 units of 60. That is 4 packs of infantry. What tens to happen is that my unit size miraculously fits with Pendraken pack sizes - odd that, isn't it? The Dark Ages units are 32 figures each - one pack plus two command. Works nicely as 8x4 figure bases.

Then, I note each pack I buy.  This gets added to my lead mountain as I buy them.
When I paint, I make a note, and this comes off the mountain.
Extra figures get used up padding out gun crews, command groups and as status markers (pre 1900). Very few go into the spares box.

:) Works for me.

Painted

6mm
11,110
10mm
7,439
Ships
655
15mm
350
Total
19,554

I won't bore you with the break down into foot mounted and 'models' (vehicles, guns...)

I use a spreadsheet to calculate my orders that almost never come to complete packs :-[ Thanks again Leon & co for your patience with my part packs

I then use the spreadsheet to track my painting

Unpainted 678 10mm  I think I need to start planning my next project :-\

Painted this years, as of 13-12-2020:-
4530 figures, of which  2366 are mine.
Best year by volume ever.
Should go up by 72 in the next day or two too! ;)

A very different approach to me. I see things that I like the look of, and buy them, adding them to the lead mounting for that project. It's quite rare that I actually work through in detail what I will need. The Samurai are one of the few exceptions to that - where I planned the purchases quite carefully. But I have added to that project, before I finished the first part of it.

Only having 678 unpainted would seem wrong...

Even adding a zero I doubt you are touching the sides of my lead mountain!

Looks like i'm not doing too badly with my count  ;D ;D ;D

In honesty the stuff that tends to stick in the unpainted pile is mostly 28mm. They just go so much slower than the small scales.

Out of curiosity I've just done some counting of painted 10mm figures
Sengoku Japanese - 330
Dwarves - 550 (some high density units here)
Forces of Nature - 270

Each of these take up approximately 1 A4 sheet of paper in area. Which might seem a strange measurement, but as much of my stuff is in box files, really useful boxes, or Bisley drawers, each of which has the surface area of approximately A4, its quite convienent.

My only concern is that on a previous count, I had 113 A4 equivalents of figures (both painted and unpainted).  And taking a rough average of 400 figures per A4 layer, that gives some 40,000 figures...

Tanks and larger scales will bring it down (I hope).  But unpainted will have higher counts.

At this stage I'm not sure I want to continue with counting or not....

Freight costs are a major factor for us in the Antipodes, it is common practice to combine orders and share the freight costs

If you need a few more x the cost of freight and the time delay is significant

Hence the need to think about my next project :-\

I haven't settled on my purchasing style yet.

I have carefully planned out a couple of projects in the past and buy all the figures, only to completely rethink them once I get them. I don't really like having excess figures for a project, but find I can usually make use of leftovers as casualties and the like and it's nice having a pool of figs to draw from.

I've a more standardised basing now so could probably carefully plan better, but I've taken to starting small with an army pack or the like then build from there rather than massively increasing the mountain. Having recently done a few armies I've allowed myself a new addition.

So adding 5 models, brings the total to 643 models painted!

the tally : about 6340 models are painted and 2075 models are still waiting for love.
