I've started on my next mini-project; 33 1/3,000 scale cargo ships and and tankers
'Some' months ago Aksu very kindly printed these for me and a similar number for the Pierre the Shy
So far I've removed them from the support base, very straight forward :)
Cleaned up a few of the funnels that didn't print entirely cleanly :)
There were 4 ships that need their funnels replacing as they didn't print completely :(
But I have some suitable plastic rod :)
I've drilled holes for masts for the ships :)
I've used a number of different derrick layouts which added to the multiple sizes that Aksu printed the ships in will give plenty of variety :) :)
I don't know what the hell this "logistics" is that Marshall is always talking about, but I want some of it.
I foresee some convoy actions next year... ;)
'Cause we got a little convoy
Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
'Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Sounds fun.
Mike! ;D
X_X X_X ;D
4 funnels replaced :)
Just over 100 masts cut to length & glued in place @-) #:-S
Ships undercoated last night :)
Hulls painted this morning :)
While waiting for basing mix to fully dry on ECW bases
Excellent news. Please post a pic when you're done. :)
Cheers,
Aksu
I will be posting several pictures, it would be hard to get them all into one picture ;)
Many thanks again for printing these for us =D> =D> =D>
Upper works done :)
Masts done :)
Decks done :)
Hatch covers started :)
Lifeboats started :)
Sanded bases that I cut out a while ago, not as long ago as Aksu printed the ships :-[
Hatch covers finished :)
Lifeboats finished :)
Funnel tops done :)
Painted first side of first half of bases :)
Cricket, and just think what it would be like if you weren't busy...
;D ;D
Painted second side of first half of bases just before I went to bed last night :)
Painted first side of second half of bases this morning :)
Touched up ships :)
Avoided touching up deck then hull then deck spiral #:-S
I'll do a test wash on one ship late today to see how it works with the 3D printing 'layers' :-\
Painted second side of second half of bases :)
Just noticed that I bought the 250ml 'test pot' of house paint I use for these bases in December 2012 :o
The paint is still completely usable, didn't even need any water added :)
Longevity of paint - good name for a band!
Barely onto page 2 and the end of the project looks near! :o
Pictures soon, I hope?
I did say mini-project ;)
Cut out labels I printed a couple of weeks ago :)
The test wash has worked :)
It hasn't shown up the 3D printing layers
Remaining ships washed :)
I should get this project finished this year, pictures might take a bit longer :-\

I think I've got their debut album, "Watching it dry..."
Although it also sounds like a Culture ship name...
About paint and 3D layers: in my experience it's been more of a problem when dry brushing than with washes.
Cheers,
Aksu
Good thing I don't dry brush my ships then :)
The wash has worked its magic overnight :) :)
Bases labelled :)
So now we have more than enough 1:3000 transports to run the GQ NEI Campaign sometime in 2020....... ;)
Ships sorted onto bases :)
Four masts needed re-gluing, less than a 4% failure rate :)
With these additions I've only got 14 Tankers and 29 Cargo ships, is that enough :-\
Definitely looking to do the GQ NEI Campaign sometime in 2020
Half the wakes done :) :!!
Other half of the wakes done :)
First half of ships based :)
Second half of ships based :)
They should be painted "crab fat" ie grey, but I did my 1/3000 merchies as every shipping line working out of Liverpool in the 60's. You can name Liberties after friends and relations, they seem to have been named after people.
They're a variety of greys with some browns added for 'colour', hopefully I'll get some pictures after they have been varnished tomorrow
I've numbered them as they will see service for a range of what I suspect you would consider 'damn foreigners' as well as the UK
Was it all the left or right wakes you did first?

I reckon he did the wak s before he did the es s. That's certainly the way round I would do it. Only a fule would do them by sides! :o :o
;D ;D ;D
All the ships have been varnished :)
I was going to photograph them this afternoon but there is a orange/yellow haze caused by the bush fires in Australia about 2,500km away
This has reduced the light available for photos and has a strange yellow cast
Apparently in some parts of the South Island visibility is down to 10km due to the haze, it should be an interesting sunset tonight

I hope every one in Australia is keeping as safe as possible, last I heard 3 had died :(
Good grief !! :o :o
The BBC news has it at 7 deaths in recent days. :(
Just awful.
I think it's difficult for us in the British Isles to comprehend the distances and areas affected, as we live on a relatively tiny area of land.
I share your sentiments, Paul.
Cheers - Phil
The distance from Sydney to Wellington (NZ) is similar to London to Kiev
The smoke shown above is crossing about 700km of the New South Wales and Victoria coasts, think Dover to Edinburgh
Around 100 fires are burning across just New South Wales, with up to half as yet uncontained
Horrible situation, hooe no one on here is too badly efdected.
I've friends in Sydney who so far have avoided the fires, but the resulting air quality issues are starting to bite.
Hopefully it will bring the Australian government into a more climate friendly stance.
Enough politics.
I notice that GrumpyOldMan was last active Yesterday at 11:18:40 PM which I take as a good sign
There look to be a couple of fires about 20km from his town but both are under control
The NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE Fire Near Me page makes for worrying reading https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me (https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me)
It doesn't look like I'll get to take any pictures of the ships today :(
Cloudy and hazy, the sun is an angry red ball two hours after sunrise
After a couple of games of Bigjackmac's air rules the weather briefly improved enough for pictures :)
The air rules worked really well :-bd =D> :-bd
I flew Ki-43 Oscar fighters against Hurricanes and then Hurricanes against A6M2 Zeros and all three types different capabilitieswere elegantly represented by the simple rules :) :) :)
I'll let Pierre the Shy fill you in on the details ;)

Always an interesting question, do you sculpt sea on your bases or have the base calm to match your base cloth :-\
Very nice! The masts look great! Must start adding those yo my ships.
Cheers,
Aksu
I sculpt. A friend uses clear bases...

Glad you like them :)
Thanks again for printing these for us :-bd
I did get a small surprise when I drilled the first hole, the hulls are hollow :o
Makes sense when you think about 3D printing but came as a surprise to someone used to cast ships
Nice merchant fleet. :-bd
A submariners dream. Not an escort in sight. Brings back fond memories of 'Silent service'.
