Title: Movie - T34
Post by: d_Guy on 06 November 2019, 03:49:33 PM
I watched it on Amazon Prime last night. Russian made but well dubbed. It is graphic novel-like and somewhat in the style of  Quentin Tarantino.
While highly improbable in many cases (it is an over-the-top hommage to the Russian tankers of the the Great Patriotic War), I found it captivating. I can't speak to the accuracy of the uniforms and equipment but looked quite believable to me.

Beautiful scenery, gorgeous cinematography, and some of the best slow motion and freeze-frame action I've screen. The last, along with great aerial shots (perhaps using models), explains the tactical situation as tanks maneuver and fire. It has typical Russian pathos throughout but climbs a sunlit slope at the end.

Has anyone seen it?

Yes, fsn has almost single-handedly gotten me into tanks

So, a Soviet version of "Fury"? Sounds interesting, though I loathe slow-motion action sequences. Watching "300" and "Watchmen" put me off them for life.

I think the pressure wave preceding supersonic solid shot, just passing within a few metres, would cause damage to people - big over pressure damages lungs. I think it just seems to interrupt conversation a little in the film. It's more a cinematographer's technique than real.

Yes, sometimes the only apparent effect on the crew was a ringing in the ears!

It out-does "fury" in that on two occasions the T34 takes on multiple German tanks. In one scene a single AP round passes through the turret of one tank and takes out the turret of a second tank. The muzzle velocity would be equivalent to a bolt from a sci-fi railgun fired down a gravity well.

Normally I would agree with you on slowmo (which seems to be used to add loving detail to the gore). In this case it is very effective story-telling technique which explains why the T34 isn't destroyed multiple times.

Worth it for the scene of a T-34/85 rampaging through a car park full of nazi limousines...

Oh, and Panzer II & III. A war movie that acknowledges the fact that not every German tank was a Panther or a Tiger.
