Title: SYW help
Post by: jfariahitech on 30 December 2010, 10:21:58 PM
I am a longtime player of WWII and Antiquity and I am considering changing a little bit, and buy some packs of SYW figures.
Never played this period of military history and have little knowledge about the composition of their armies, uniforms and weaponry.
So, I ask you help in choosing the best set of rules (simple & fast) for playing SYW in 10mm, links/pics with painting guides, or other issues you may find useful.
Thanks in advance!

For large scale battles I recommend Sam Mustafa's "Might & Reason". Very fun gaming.

You can see some of my SYW stuff based for Might & Reason in this topic:

Thanks guys for all info.
It's my next year objective, play SYW.

Hi "Z", just loved your minis pics, specially the casualties, very nice  :-bd.
Do you have any painting uniform guide?

Regards
JF

I agree with Lentulus, you should look at Kronoskaf exellent page. Apart from a few Osprey books I generally looked to Kronoskaf for info.

I'm using Black Powder Jorge - worked fine here: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=1690.0

I've also got Rank & File - which is also a nice, simple, fastplay ruleset although I've not used that for SYW yet.

When I was looking at painting my Austrians & Prussians I found my research actually started to overwhelm me - so I used juniorgeneral for simplicity's sake: http://www.juniorgeneral.org/load.php?Period=4

My painting diary if you've not seen it - is here: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=709.0

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks Nick
Very useful info, and a great idea using the Junior General as a painting guide.
And you have a very nice painting job too, you've very nice figures :-bd

I've got "Black Powder" and Might & Reason rules book, I will try both... after painting my armies... in the next months  :-\

You could also try having a look at Die Kriegskunst, which is a SYW focused set of rules, a varient of the popular General De Brigade Napoleonic rules. Also, i'd agree that Nik's SYW battle report makes great reading and proves an inspiration, as do all of the battle reports  :)

I use Black Powder for War of Spanish Succession - I mention this for the caveat that anything outside Napoleonics you might want to tweak the rules (eg no Attack Column allowed)

I am currently reading Might & Reason rules, then I read Black Powder rules, after that I will choose the rules that most pleases me.
Thanks to everyone for all the help  :-bd

Looking for a fun set of SYW rules - you could try Minden Rose. These come with army lists and are great fun. In the Liverpool club we play them using 25mm square bases for infantry - I mount 2 ranks of 4 for regulars and 3 dispersed figures for Grenzers, lights, freikorps. Cavalry are based 3 figures on a 30mm square base and artillery are based on a 30mm frontage by 60mm depth. This allows for artillery equipment four or five crew and gabions if wanted. I also have a few batalions with 2infantrymen, 2 artillerymen and a 3pdr batalion gun on the fourth infantry base. This looks good and the base just acts like any other infantry base.
I have also started to use Sam Mustafa's Might and Reason for playing some of the big historical scenarios. These are e-rules and are very well supported by free scenarios, additional army lists and so forth on the website. Also useful is the fact that two Minden Rose bases make a single Might and Reason base.
All the best with your project; the SYW has given me a great deal of wargaming pleasure over the last few years.
