Long time no post :(
The above mentioned is a new start series on Amazon Prime. Fantasy, all the various races are human sized; has flying fairies, human-faced sheep-people (like WH beastmen), centaurs, two human factions, the Pact and the Burg Republic, one the ememy of the other. Set in a late Victorian type timeline with a steampunk element. All the usual bonking and gore. Orlando Bloom, Jed Harris and other well known faces. Very well made with good CGI.
I've watched the first fouir or so. I make no comment on whether it's good bad or indifferent, watch it and make up your own mind.
It is however ideal fodder for wargame armies! ;)
Looks interesting, just put on our watchlist. Thanks.
Thanks for the heads up. Will check out later!!!
Particularly good scrap in episode 3 featuring airships. Ian should watch it to examine the unpleasantness of an unjustified dislike of foreigners.

Isn't he one of the characters?
On to episode 2, great show!
Thanks for filling us in :D
Went to Prime to investigate - first thing up was an advert for Carnival Row, so not hard to find!
30 mins into Episode 2 and loving it so far.
Cheers!
It gets very dark.
Episode 4 so far and pretty great. Don't mind the darkness. Cthulu like vibe!
:D I gather Episode 1 of Series 2 is already in production.
Hear that first episode of George R.R. Martin's frst 'Game of Thrones' spin-off series is in cut for HBO review. Seems that there are 4 othr series in the queue.

I'd normally say "stop dicking about with distractions and finish the Winds of Winter book!", but I've realised that I don't actually care anymore.
And if you like Victorian-set fantasy then I'd recommend Penny Dreadful.

Na - no acting ability at all, along with no sense of humour ! :d :d
Yup Penny Dreadful a good 'un. Some outstanding performances there.

That one has been on my list for a while as well!
Never heard of it, please expand.
It's got Eva Green in it.
Carnival row done, was great!

Penny Dreadful is Victorian Gothic and is a mash up of Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Frankenstein with a leavening of supernatural devilry.
Supposed to be a TV sequel; Penny Dreadful - City of Angels in the offing.
The phrase 'penny dreadfu'l. 'The expression is American and came into use in the late 19th century as a perjorative term for the numerous cheap crime magazines that purveyed poorly written and hackneyed storylines.'
And owing a great deal to Victorian cityscape paintings by Atkinson Grimshaw.
Just heard on one of the Podcasts I listen to that there is an official, FREE, Carnival Row RPG. Written by the Carnival Row creator, Travis Beacham, it uses the "Cypher System by Monte Cook Games and the Cypher System Rulebook is required to play".

I've not seen the show yet, so only skimmed through the PDF to avoid potential spoilers, but it's very pretty with atmospheric art and a map of the world.
Apart from some character generation stuff and the sample characters at the end it seems mostly rules-free background information of the world and the city of Burgue.
Cheers!

Am I wrong to look at the new sculpts, yet to be released, for Russo Japanese war and think.....hmmmmmmm... :-\ Burgue and Pact for Carnival Row? ;D
I must admit it has piqued my imagination as to some future projects based upon the whole look of both sides, which would be pretty easy to do from existing ranges. Once FWCII is released, I might revisit this...
I'm part-way through series 2 - shame the plot is almost the same as series 1, surely they could have come up with something s little more inventive, however I am also liking the Steam-Punk Victoriana approach.

They were pretty hamstrung for the production by infighting and then filming was impacted by Covid restrictions. The original intention was for the series to run for a long time so I think they had to wrap it all up pretty quickly :(
I think Amazon chose not to do any more series, so everything has had to be 'rushed' to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion (hopefully). Shadow & Bone on Netflix is in a similar vein, but with magic rather than fey creatures.
Just finished episode 6 series 2 ... there must be another series planned. I will say no more.
There are four more episodes to come Mark IIRC. I think we are to watch episode 6 tonight, if we haven't already done so :-\ .

I'm afraid it is 2 seasons and done, I was gutted when it was announced :(

It's been a while since I've seen it - didn't finish the first series - but the Burque are surely just WW1 British in cap and greatcoat?

Sort of...both sides seem closer to various Russian style uniforms in the show but the original concept art for the costumes is a bit different.

I've since read that Serbians make good stand-ins for The Pact troops.
:-\ I'd forgotten about the ones in caps :)
The issue I have is that I have a big bag of the old/current Pendraken figures for the Russo Japanese war that could be easily used but the new range is coming out and they are much nicer!! Plus the Serbians are an old range and wouldn't match.
I could swerve the issue altogether and go for 28mm...where I already have a steampunk airship and a few suitable figures..........or both :D
