Title: French WW2 Engineers in 20mm
Post by: Orcs on 10 July 2019, 06:36:11 AM
Hi All,

Just started a WW2 French 20mm  Chain of Command Platoon. O am looking for suitable engineer figures, that I can convert either with a head swap or a "paint conversion". For head swaps ideally they nee to be metal figures, not the polythene ones.

Does the hive mind of the Forum know of any?

Cheers

Mark

Hello Orcs

Are you looking for active type or construction types?

For construction you could look at the EWM heavy artillery crew (also useful spare heads),

Otherwise have a look at their HQ and Communications sets https://earlywarminiatures.com/product-category/early-war-1939-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts-hq-communications/ (https://earlywarminiatures.com/product-category/early-war-1939-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts-hq-communications/) and maybe add in a few Chasseurs D Alpines without smocks https://earlywarminiatures.com/product-category/early-war-1939-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts-chasseurs-d-alpines/ (https://earlywarminiatures.com/product-category/early-war-1939-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-french-army-1939-to-1943-all-fronts-chasseurs-d-alpines/)

EWM are my goto's for 20mm.

Cheers

Hi
THanks for that,  I am after combat type engineers, mine clearing, Wire cutting and possibly a flame thrower.

Hello Orcs

Well The only ones I could find are some FAA figures, which includes a flame thrower https://www.faaminiatures.com/p-275-frn-11-engineers.aspx (https://www.faaminiatures.com/p-275-frn-11-engineers.aspx)

They don't cover the full range of stuff you're looking for, but maybe a start.

This article (where I got the info on these engineers) also covers scratchbuilding some engineers https://baberonwargames.blogspot.com/2018/11/french-additions-for-tunisia.html (https://baberonwargames.blogspot.com/2018/11/french-additions-for-tunisia.html)

If these are 1940 types there would be no minesweepers, they weren't around till 41 at the earliest. Prior to that it was probing with bayonets (or smoke grenade can keys in my case). Think you will need to convert prone figures for both mine clearing and wire cutting. The old Airfix WWI set may be a help.

The lack of mine clearing is something that shocked me when I was reading about the Saar offensive 1939. Tanks rolling onward until immobilised in a minefield. I suppose if you have a purely defensive doctrine you won't need expensive specialist kit that is only useful in an attack.

Zvezda (plastic, I know) do some small boxes of 4 figures for various nations.

I have found a geed Britsh mineclearer  at SHQ, probing  with a slick and levering a mine out of the ground. I will do a head swap
