I have gamed so long in 10mm - everything else is a distant memory.
My last venture in 6mm was Franco Prussian - so blocks of infantry (little dioramas really) but with these 6mm figures, I need a requirement to represent a squad or section equal to what could be carried in a 3ton lorry. (perhaps 2 bases x 5 figures as I use for 10mm?) I also need a base that can be put in trenches or behind barricades.
OK - British 3 Tonner would lift at least 2 Sections (20 men) I'd base as sections, use 4-6 figures on a base (my 6mm stuff is all based on 30x20 with 4 figures). Scatter LMG's across the bases, but by 43-4 most Infantry AT weapons were at company or higher level, distributed at need. A US Duece and half officially carried less, but had the same capacity, so 2 Lorries per Platoon. With the US scatter Jeeps through the unit. Bear in mind that British and US infantry had no organic troop transport, just their supply echelon.
Almost all other armies had the infantry walk. 4 bases for most, PHQ and 3 Sections. Russians are 3 Sections, and Italians had 2 Very large ones, best split into smaller elements. German transport is chaotic, over 200 types of lorry. The official set up for Panzer Grenadiers was 4 heavy cars, or 3 medium trucks and a lt car.
Have totally confused you now :D :D

If you want figures to go in trenches you will want quite narrow bases. Perhaps 30x15mm
I'd base a section / squad on a base so 5-7 men.
7 is few too many. For trenches make up markers for 3 sides, leave back open
In the past I've used 40mm x 12mm, 5 per base, for Epic: Armageddon.
Currently looking into basing as per Flames of War, but half-sized. So a medium base, with 5 figures on, would be 25mm x 16mm.

In 10mm I use 5 figures for green/regular - 4 for elite. This basic "unit" fits x 2 in a 3 tonner or APC.
When they de-buss the two "units" operate as fire teams - if they take a hit - one unit will normally survive.
Minded to use this for the 6mm. Add weapons such as 2" mortar and AT rifle across the "platoon", plus a support unit with HMGs and A/T guns plus 3 AFVs in a tabletop "battle group". A troop of early armoured cars, a battery of guns in support ...and - air support decided by dice roll. :)
