Henry and Colin came around for another day of Cruel Seas gaming. I wanted to give the Vospers an outing for a change, so we had two groups of 3 MTBs conducting a raid on a German coastal convoy. I took the convoy, which consisted of a merchantman and a tanker, escorted by a Vorpostenboot and a torpedo boat. The Germans also had the possibility of some air cover.

These are alternative forms of the past tense and past participle of the verb learn. Both are acceptable, but learned is often used in both British English and American English, while learnt is much more common in British English than in American English.
We learned the news at about three o'clock.

I burned/burnt the toast by mistake.

Leap, lean, spill, and others are also verbs of this type. They are all irregular verbs, and this is a part of their irregularity.
Learned (but not learnt) is also an adjective, pronounced as two syllables (ˈlə:n|əd) rather than the one syllable verb (ləːnt or ləːnd). The adjective, when said of a person, means 'having acquired much knowledge through study'. It can also be used of objects, meaning 'showing, requiring, or characterized by learning; scholarly'.
She is a learned and respected teacher.

My first thought, when I saw 'effeteness'.....was that it was 'wrong'..... (Did we have 'effete' torpedoes.....Nah...Surely not !)
When I did a bit of checking it was......"Oh, fair enough, effeteness meant that the torpedoes weren't quite up to the job."
Having looked up a word that I'd never come across....It was a case that, "Stroll on..James...You've taught me something."

The daft thoroughbred we've got......"Bill".
His 'Dad' was Teenoso, who won the Derby in 1983. (Von says Teenoso was one of the 'worst' ever Derby winners.)
One of Bill's 'Granddad's' was Grundy, who won the Derby in 1975. (Even I'd heard of Grundy.....But could I remember his wretched name last night ?.....Brain fade, again. X_X)
Apparently Bill ran in 4 races of fairly large 'fields' and came third in three of those, after which he injured a tendon (or two) and was retired from racing.
