Book 2 of our Sellswords and Spellslingers campaign.
We left our Heroes at the end of the last book relaxing after their brave excursion in to the Deserts of the East. And then a messenger arrives...He is a lowly acolyte looking for Brother Christos. The High Arch-Priest has summoned him!
Our brave band are required to help Christos find Father Brennan who has been on a secret quest. Brennan has sent word he has made an important discovery, but someone is trying to stop him reaching the Temple.

Great report, and always lovely to see one of my old figures not doing so well...
Nice looking game and I love the figures 8).
Great stuff, Graham. :)
Am I right in thinking some (?) of the figures are 'old' Citadel models ?
Cheers - Phil
Thank you gents.
Will - (Bravely Bold) Sir Robin usually does OK actually - apart from the one time he was killed!
Phil - Yes, there are one or two older Citadel figures in the piccis, along with Essex, Vendel and assorted other makes. I really have trouble thinking of Vendel as being an "old" range even though the Patten bros designed the figures before 2008.
Cost a bloody fortune to get the show off resurrected.
;D =O =D>
Chapter Two
The party's first task is to obtain directions that, together with the information obtained from father Brennan, will guide them on their path to the fabled city. Many centuries ago these directions were inscribed, in code, onto a mighty monolith. Unfortunately, their importance was forgotten over time and, after a viscous war, the local people broke the monolith up to construct tombs for their war dead. A mighty Necromancer was incensed by this action, that he cursed the burial site that the dead within would find no peace! Should be easy!

Superb report, laughed out loud, several times.
Christos: "There was a planning session?"
The Red Lion called, dominoes night is cancelled...
;D ;D
Excellent stuff, Graham. :)
Cheers - Phil
Chapter Three
Our heroes now have to cross the Black Crags through Giant Pass, it didn't go quite as expected.

Cultural enemies.
Great report !!
Cheers - Phil
Not going well is it? ;D
Sintamo;
Right, if we go through Orc pass then we'll have fight orcs.
Gunnar;
No problem, know those mountains well, Orcs are a cultural enemy. We dwarves know how to fight orcs.
Sintamo;
lots of Orcs.
Gunnar;
And?
Bravely Bold Sir Robin
I'm with stun (Gunnar glares)... Um Gunnar on this.
Eldarondo
No, you two, just no.
Sintamo
The other route is a bit of a climb, which is why its called Orrud; Cloud Pass.
Gunnar
Cloud Giant Pass.
Eduardo
What?
Gunnar
Orrud Gronti, not Orrud. Cloud Giant pass.
Sintamo
Oh don't be stupid.
Gunnar
I think I can speak the language of my forefathers.
Brother Christos
Cloud Giants are a myth.
Gunnar
Said the religious nutter. Its not the Orrud part, its the Gronti.
Sintamo
I'm a ranger, I think I know which way to navigate.
Gunnar (muttering)
I'm a bleeding Khazad, but no, Mr Stumble knows best.

Thanks for sharing, Graham.

Excellent report Graham, thank you.
Great report. I've just purchased a copy of this ruleset ( as well as four against darkness from the same site ) based partly on the fun you're having and partly on browsing through Pendrakens dungeon range. Could be an interesting side project.
Thank you gentlemen.
mmcv: If I had come to this start from scratch, instead of having shed loads of 25/28mm fantasy figures I probably would have gone for Pendraken's dungeon and Warband ranges. It is a great fun set of rules, I've played some great solo games as well.

Yeah there's some nice options in there that can give a bit if a break to batch painting armies. Terrain and features will be a lot easier too.
The truth revealed!
SCENE: NORDIC FOOTHILLS ON THE WAY OUT OF CLOUD GIANT PASS. DAYTIME. THE PARTY CAN BE SEEN IN THE DISTANCE.
As the party approach they can be heard to be bickering, as usual.
Gunnar
I told you it was Cloud Giant pass, but oh no, Mr Stumble thinks he know more about mountains than the First People.
Eldarondo
Ahem. Elves are the first people, hence Elder Race.
Gunnar
muttering
I said people not triffids.
Eldarondo glares at him.
Sintamo
I'm a ranger, I know the lores.
Gunnar
You trod on a scorpion IN A BLEEDING MOUNTAIN PASS. Good job it was after we got through the tricky bit.
Sintamo
Not my fault there are stone scorpions. Eddie stepped on one too!
Gunnar
But his didn't matter, he's wearing platforms.
Eduardo.
I am NOT wearing platforms.
Gunnar
Prove it. Why else would you have grown
Eduardo sits on a rock and hitches up the hem of his robe to show his left boot. The sole is a little thicker, but not unusually so.
Eduardo
See, told you.
Gunnar
What about the other one?
Eduardo
Bugger off Khazguz.
Gunnar
Grab him Christos
Christos wrestles Eduardo to the ground. Gunnar pulls up the robe.
Gunnar
I'll teach you to call me a pebble eater you son of a ...
Gunnar double takes.
Gunnar
What the hell is that?!
He has revealed a clumsy boot with a built up sole some centimeters thick.
Eduardo
Its orthopedic, its orthopedic!
Gunnar gets off him and Christos helps him up. Eduardo is upset his disability has been discovered.
Eduardo
It happens sometimes. The manna causes a growth spurt. None of my undershirts fit anymore, my arms are too long. But the limbs don't grow equally, so I've got to wear this while I wait for it to catch up.
Robin
Well it could be worse. I knew a man this happened to but he had it worse. It was the top of his leg that didn't grow, so his foot stayed on the ground, but he needed an artificial thigh.
Robin, oblivious of how mad this is,turns and carries on down the path. The others stare slack jawed at the stupidity.
Gunnar
He needed...
Eduardo
An artificial thigh....
Gunnar.
Ye may be in platforms but at least ye aint daft. Mad, yes,but not daft.
While trying to edit I accidentally quoted it.

Won't happen, basically because Eduardo, Master of Flame, will say "Quiet, isn't it?"...

Great ! (and I liked the talks between them ;D )
Much of those are quoting me and Sunjester during the game as we react to the dice rolls. The reactions to Eddie fighting the wolves is a case in point. Nobody is quite sure how he keeps killing things, given he has no skill points in fighting. It was SJ who said a few games back he probably just waves the sword around with his eyes closed, and on Friday I acted out the Elf prodding him from a safe distance once all the wolves were dead.
Some of of the coincidences make for running jokes. I'm sure the ranger has fallen over a disproportionate amount of time, despite being the alleged "wilds" expert, and stepped on poisonous wildlife, leading to suspicions in the party he is carrying round scorpions for unknown ranger reasons.
Early on I noted the fighter's armour looked like one of Monty Python's knights from Holy Grail, hence getting called Bravely Bold Sir Robin (actually its Terry Jones's Bedivere costume). Thus he has been characterised as a sort of mash up of all of them (except Chapman's "only sane man" Arthur.)
For some reason the cleric has always charged into combat from the first scenario, you'd have to ask SJ why. This is despite SJ realising AFTER A NUMBER OF GAMES he had the Safe Retreat skill. Thus he was named in honour of a friend who has gone to that Great Wargame Table in the Sky, who had one tactic, even if his orders were Defend.
Eddie acquired his name because I mispronounced the class as Wizzard. He only became properly power mad when he learnt the fireball spell.
Gunnar's family name is as close as I could get to the dwarfish for Sugden. The "cultural enemy' running joke is because he overcame overwhelming odds 3 times in 2 games, each time I explained it as because they were "cultural enemies". I think the first time was when he killed the cloud Giant. This has lead Sintamo to point out dwarves do seem to have a lot of enemies, though Gunnar doesn't appreciate the sarcasm. You could say it goes over his head.
High rolls for shooting the bows have turned into a competition between the 2 archers, with SJ and I trying to call the most unlikely reasons we hit in true Orlando Bloom style. Both were outclassed by Eduardo, though. We amended the rules to say oif the fireball isn't aimed at a specific person/feature etc it deviates 1d6 in a random direction. This lead to him hitting a group of bandits beyond maximum range- he must have skipped the fireball bouncing bomb/ducks and drakes style into them.

The other couple of Heatbreaker poses I've still got are probably also yours then!
Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement chaps. LH and I are having too much fun with this gang of misfits, so I'm working on another campaign for them now.

Could be....But there were also Kev Adams, Chaz Elliot and Tim Prow working for them around that time.

Superb.
Wot no scorpions? ;D

They are more skellies, so they are yours. Is anyone still selling these?
I also had some elves, I think by Chaz Elliot, but I've no idea what happened to them.
Too lost to remember to open their box and pet them.

I have a feeling that 'Impact Miniatures' bought the licence........But I believe they were producing them in 'resin'.....There was a kickstarter a few months ago.
I'm 99% certain that I've got the complete first two Heartbreaker releases in one of the sheds.....And 99% certain I know exactly where they are.
PM me if you want the metal versions, Graham.
Cheers - Phil
Next time you are in that great metropolis along the Wing Rd feel free to let me know. Or aren't I good enough to drink with you and SJ?
For those who wish to recreate our heroic band...
Gunnar - Dwarf - Neutral Good - High CON
Christos - Cleric - Lawful Aggressive
Eldarondo - Elf - Narcissistic Neutral - High DEX, healing skills
Robin- Fighter - Lawful Stupid - + on weapon skills
Sintamo- Ranger - Neutral Clumsy
Eduardo - Chaotic Stoned.

Good grief !
For Graham (Sunjester) I've rooted around in one of the sheds this afto'.....
I thought I still had a few models that might be of some interest to him.....(From the old original Heartbreaker ranges).....Bu t I didn't realise I still had SO many old models......Stroll on !!
I believed that I'd junked almost everything before we moved to Wales.
(I nearly finished off my back, lifting some of the trays of models......I kid you not !)
There were blisters and blisters of ranges that I was involved in......"Earth Dawn" ?....Name rings a bell...and I can tell that I made some of the figures, from the style....But apart from that.....
Umpteen kilos of Battlemech figures.....And still quite a lot of very early Citadel stuff....Including some of their first plastic models.....
Cheers - The Hoarder.
