Title: Tank Weight
Post by: Pruneau on 14 December 2010, 11:36:47 AM
Weird one coming up: does anyone know what a Tiger II weighs?  I need to know to choose magnets.  Don't want parts falling off.

Should have seen that one coming I guess ~X( =O

That means I need the 75 cm x 150 cm x 75 cm Neodymium magnet.

I'll see if Dave's got one on his desk, and then I'll have to bring it home and put it on my digital scales.

I have one that weighs 89 grams, inluding base (3 grams) and flocking... Hope that helps.

That saves me a job!

Thanks a lot, that answers the question!  I'm looking at what size of Neodymium magnet(s) I need to drill holes for in the bottom of the tracks in order to have magnetic-storable tanks without needing to base them.  With that kind of weight its not looking good, I might have to find another way, cause if I have to put 4 minimagnets in every tank it's gonna get expensive.

From what I've read, even the small magnets (3mm diameter) should have enough strength? The one in the link is rated for 210 grams, and should fit on the underside of the hull, between the tracks? Yes, it would be visible, I guess, but only if you look real close.

As an alternative, just ask Leon to do some experiments to come up with casting metal that can be magnetized...

Good grade 3 mm will work indeed, I have 2x1 mm coz the missus works for a magnet-y company.  I'll have to check whether they do those as well.  I have a supplier in China that my company uses, but there I have to buy per 10000 pieces minimum since we don't use that particular format -or any miniformat - for our production.  Mind you, they're bloody cheap that way.

Ah! Building a better life with office supplies.

Maybe you could just order 10000 of the little buggers from China, and file it under 'research'? Perhaps you will even find a use for them, and save the company big money.  :D

Legal Notice: When parts start falling off from your companies products, don't blame me!

Hmmm... a magnetic alloy....

You'll need a lot of new tanks to go with those...   :D

Could you sell them to other gamers?

Thing is (the little snake under the grass) that although the magnets cost about 1/10th of the cheapest price I could find in Europe (for 100 pcs), the delivery cost is 76$, and there might just be a bit of customs to add to that as well.  But if there are a lot of people looking for 1000 of the little magnets, I wouldn't mind setting it up.  I have a quote that remains valid for 9 more days :)  Or maybe I have to start a small company.  I'll call it "Fatal Attraction Inc"  :D

I have seen them on a couple of tradestands at the shows, usually packaged up in bulk, 25's, 50's, etc.  I don't know how many they sell, but it must be enough to warrant taking them to the show?

You could sell them to teenagers and city bankers as 'Mobile Anti-Gravity Attachment Devices'.  They stick one to their mobile phones, and one to the side of their face, and hey presto, instant hands free kit.

Are tooth fillings magnetizable?  ;D

I've read somewhere that people use them to fix the turrets to the hull. Drill some holes, put one in the turret and one in the hull, and presto, the turret can revolve, but won't fall off. Who knows, may even help with transporting them, just stick em to the lid of the box!

Go on then Leon, you know you want some for your MiniBits... You can always create some demand using sly marketing techniques, like selling pre-packaged 'DeLuxe' AFV's with revolving turrets...

The idea is to do both.  I'm working on very low scale rules, based loosely on Advanced Squad Leader, and want the turrets to move independently in order to make tank battles more realistic.  The storage thing is tricky: my 2 mm N48 magnets only can hold about 30 g.  And I want to avoid having to drill 4 holes per tank if 2 will do the trick.  The turret thing is a no brainer though: the 2 mm magnet does the job just fine, and if you make sure you have magnets that are magnetized over thickness they can remain in any position, or you can go for axis polarisation and have 4 or 8 fixed positions, I'm trying both atm.

I'd be tempted, but I need to fill in some more popular areas first, before buying 10000 magnets!

Thanks for that info, pleased to see at least some forum members resort to scientific methods to determine important facts!
