Title: Italian soldiers in Pistoia Cathedral, 1376AD
Post by: Druzhina on 06 March 2019, 05:07:35 AM
I have saved some photos by Hugh McDonald of Italian soldiers on panels from the side of the silver altar-piece in Pistoia Cathedral completed by Francesco di Niccolò and Leonardo di Ser Giovanni of Florence in 1376. (http://warfare.gq/14/Pistoia_Cathedral-Scenes_from_the_Life_of_St_James.htm)   panel 5 (http://warfare.gq/14/Pistoia_Cathedral-Scenes_from_the_Life_of_St_James-Panel_5.htm), panel 6 (http://warfare.gq/14/Pistoia_Cathedral-Scenes_from_the_Life_of_St_James-Panel_6.htm), panel 7 (http://warfare.gq/14/Pistoia_Cathedral-Scenes_from_the_Life_of_St_James-Panel_7.htm) and panel 8 (http://warfare.gq/14/Pistoia_Cathedral-Scenes_from_the_Life_of_St_James-Panel_8.htm).
Google Plus is closing, so if you wish to save any of the other photos by Hugh McDonald do so soon.

Note the epaulettes worn by some soldiers.

Similar epaulettes are portrayed in the Villani Chronicle, 1390s - Conquest of Carmignano (http://warfare.cf/14/Villani_Chronicle-04.htm)

and in Paintings of Italian Soldiers by Niccolo di Giovanni Ventura, 1443 in La sconfitta di Montaperti (http://warfare.cf/15/Niccolo_di_Giovanni_Ventura-1443.htm), see page 18 (http://warfare.cf/15/Niccolo_di_Giovanni_Ventura-p18.htm).

Seen this in the flesh, on holiday stayed near quarrata a couple of years ago used to go into Pistoia for evening meals. I'll look see if I've got photos somewhere.
