Title: painting challenge 2019: keep on rolling!
Post by: petercooman on 09 January 2019, 09:19:42 AM
Hi guys!

About time i opened my next one for this year!

still thinking about what my challenge will be, but probably will aim at 10 projects finished again, or do something unit based, like finish 25 units.

I just bought a gaming pc (acer predator helios) , so productivity might go down a bit this year, but i'll see where i go!

Anyway, here are the first finished things for this year, some more walking dead figures i got for new year.

2 more walkers
(https://i.imgur.com/FAadyNr.jpg)

an armoured walker and billy and ben
(https://i.imgur.com/I0PnpWf.jpg)

more survivors: glenn, maggie, andrea, arnold greene and lacey greene
(https://i.imgur.com/dGHfU2A.jpg)

Total models finished: 10!

We can afford to go slower.

we don't have to stop constantly when we cut ourselves...

I asked for that, didn't I ? ;D ;D ;D ;D

I must be improving, though....The only time I've cut myself in the last two weeks was when I was digging out a blackthorn thorn from my wrist, with a 10A blade....so that doesn't count ! :P
(Didn't half bleed, though.)

No that doesn't!

It has to be the result of a rash or clumsy action. Says so in the rulebook!

Hey gents!

Been on and off with my painting for the moment. Still haven't decided on a goal for this year as well. Feeling a bit lost actually right now. (not lost in a bad way, just can't find the right project to work on right now)

Did manage to paint some more walking dead and a few odds and ends i had lying around.

the hunters from the walking dead comics
(https://i.imgur.com/RZoGF84.jpg)

two gunslingers and a cloaked vigilante from the reaper bones line
(https://i.imgur.com/JlYzGI2.jpg)

some sci fi troopers from reaper bones
(https://i.imgur.com/WKeQoF3.jpg)

adding 12 to the model count: 22 models finished

If that is the sort of results and progress you get when "lost" I wouldn't worry too much about being "lost" ;)

The problem is getting yourself to start painting when you have no direction. I find it harder to do something if i don't have a specific goal!

Really don't know. There's nothing 'urgent' for the moment.

Usually i have at least something that NEEDS to be done. I'm a bit inbetween gaming for the moment so nothing to get ready for  game.

Hey all,

Think i have found 'the problem'. A change in scale was needed to get me going!

started painting some 10 mm punic wars minis yesterday and already have 4 units finished:

numidian light cavalry and a chief:

the chiefs cloak

adding 17 to the model count: 39 models finished

Got 16 velites and 30+ iberian auxiliaries part finished as well, hope to get these done by the end of the week!

Maybe that would be a nice goal for this year, finish my punic wars minis!

Have a day off from work, so ideal to finally get some painting done!

2 units of iberian auxiliaries, for the punic wars.

carthaginian army is starting to form up!

The romans are limited to 2 units of slingers and velites each  ;D

However, i have run out of skirmisher/warband/light units so from now on it's massed cavalry and formed infantry. Pretty sure the romans will catch up there!

AND finally adding 32 to the model count: 87models finished

I first came across the idea of the Carthaginian "phalanx" in one of the Peter Connolly books - probably "Greece And Rome At War."

However, the idea of Carthage fighting in the Macedonian manner fell out a favour many moons ago. I think the theory was due to misunderstanding over the translation of "Longchephoroi" which was translated as a pike bearer in earlier versions I believe. The longche is currently believed to be a light spear or javelin.

Theories, like empires, rise and fall and some wargames figures wind up looking distinctly odd as a result!

They'd make excellent Successor pikemen. Antigonus Monopthalmos' Leukaspides (Greek: Λευκάσπιδες "White Shields"), for example.

No painting update, but finally had a solo game in after a long break.

the greene family having a go at snatching supplies from a small cabin in the forest next to the main road:

they did a great job at clearing the first part of the map
(https://i.imgur.com/FVZsrrc.jpg)

but a lot of walkers had amassed behind the cabin
(https://i.imgur.com/jVdpiP7.jpg)

in the end they made it all back to to the cars
(https://i.imgur.com/vQYnioP.jpg)

billy was the mvp with 6 kills (i use the activated markers to track kills)

followed closely by maggie and arnold with 5 and 4 kills
(https://i.imgur.com/2Vp2o0R.jpg)

Only setback was that i had to amputate patricia's hand after a walker bite. Luckily hershel was close by!!

Still a great game system to play solo!
Title: Re: painting challenge 2019: keep on rolling!
Post by: petercooman on 07 April 2019, 02:06:44 PM
Worth to mention that the only thing they found in the cabin was a pair of scissors  ;D

In this game you actually have to roll a die when you take a run action with a pair of scissors and risk a point of damage when it goes bad.

Never run with scissors kids   ;D ;D ;D

Apparently the game has no problem with you running around with hunting knives and meatcleavers though!

2)epic space marines
3)undead pirate warband
4)warhammer fantasy orcs and goblins
5)  warhammer fantasy undead
6)  LOTR goblins
7) LOTR numenor
8 ) LOTR high elves
9)  40k imperial guard
10) 40k dark angels (dark vengeance starter set)
11) 40k chaos (dark vengeance starter set)
12) mice and mystics/reaper mouselings (prepped and mounted to bases)
13)D&D legend of drizzt game (1/8th done)
14) D&D temple of elemental evil game (1/10th done)
15)D&D tomb of annihilation game

19)carthago (only the cavalry left to do)
20) republican rome (slingers done, velites undercoated)
21)pendraken zombies and survivors (cleaned and prepped and mounted to bases)

and the tally: About 5322 models are painted and 2245 models are still waiting for love.

ALso spent the evening getting all of my punic wars cavalry (and scipio) ready for painting, so watch this space! (will be a while though as i still hate painting cavalry  ;D ;D )

Had a spare hour so all the cavalry is already undercoated and ready to get painted!

I really want to get everything in 10 mil out of the way before my summer holiday so just cracking on. After these it's 9 units of roman infantry and the leftovers from my 10 mm zombie project and then i have no pendraken models unpainted. Will probably jump on the ancient greeks once they are available.

My mind is fickle though, so could be anything by then really!

Got the spanish allied cavalry done for Carthago, and the equites and Scipio for the romans.

Spanish:

Romans:

So: adding 37 to the model count: 255 models finished

this completely finishes the Carthago part of my punic wars project

so i can scratch one from the projects list:

1) epic orcs
2)epic space marines
3)undead pirate warband
4)warhammer fantasy orcs and goblins
5)  warhammer fantasy undead
6)  LOTR goblins
7) LOTR numenor

18)napoleonic French
19)pendraken zombies and survivors (cleaned and prepped and mounted to bases)
20) republican rome (slingers done, velites undercoated)
21)carthago

and the tally (adding recent purchases): About 5375 models are painted and 2241 models are still waiting for love.

Normally, next up should be the roman infantry, but might make a detour and get some 28 mm painted just to keep it fresh!

Thanks all!

The fact that these were the last of the army made me do the cavalry faster  ;D

Now all that is left in the cavalry departement are 6 units of 28 mm napoleonic cavalry. For the french 1x lancers, 1x chasseurs a cheval, 1x cuirassiers, for the british: 2x dragoons for the union  brigade, 1x hussars.

Will be a while before i start those though, planning on painting my undead pirates after i do the romans. Or maybe do the pirates first  :-/ :-/

Got a delivery from mantic on friday, so this meant painting up some more walking dead! I did them in a quick and dirty cartoon style, like my other walking dead stuff. No need to be clean, it's post apoc anyway!

Blaine for deadzone

and i also finished some chronoscope models from reaper, that were taking up space on the painting tray

So: adding 12 to the model count: 267 models finished

and the tally (adding my mantic order): About 5387 models are painted and 2237 models are still waiting for love.

It really isn't!

if you look at the numbers:

2017:1000 models painted
2018:767 models painted
2019: 267 models painted

That's over 2000 and well worth a drop in quality!

Good show! Keep at it!

As expected a lot of my time has gone into playing with the new computer, but i try to stick to minimum 50 minis per month. Seem to be doing okay for the moment so can't complain. If i can keep that up i can maybe get 600-700 models done by the end of the year!

A big plus for me is that my main projects are getting completed. Most things i have left to paint are side projects, or minis left over from earlier projects that have been abandoned. Still worth painting them up though, as:

- i can jump into new games/rules without having to do much painting effort.
- interest in the project might be rekindled
- i have something to do :)

Hastati are halfway done, slowly getting there. Triari have been prepped for painting as well. Hope to get the punic project done before we go on our trip to rhodos in august! Really looking forward to give "ancient and medieval wargaming" a spin when they are finished!

In other news, just ordered "wargaming 19th century europe" by Neil Thomas. When it comes, i'll have all his wargaming books.i'll be picking the best from all his rulesets and adding that to where i think it would fit in the periods i play.

Finally finished the last of my romans, this time the triarii

So: adding 35 to the model count: 446 models finished!

this completely finishes the roman part of my punic wars project

so i can scratch one from the projects list:

1) epic orcs
2)epic space marines
3)undead pirate warband
4)warhammer fantasy orcs and goblins
5)  warhammer fantasy undead
6)  LOTR goblins
7) LOTR numenor
8 ) LOTR high elves
9)  40k imperial guard
10) 40k dark angels (dark vengeance starter set)
11) 40k chaos (dark vengeance starter set)
12) mice and mystics/reaper mouselings (prepped and mounted to bases)
13)D&D legend of drizzt game (1/8th done)
14) D&D temple of elemental evil game (1/10th done)
15)D&D tomb of annihilation game
16) d&d mad mage game
17)napoleonic British/Hanoverians
18)napoleonic French
19)pendraken zombies and survivors (cleaned and prepped and mounted to bases)

20) republican rome
21)carthago

Next up should be number 3, undead pirate warband for flashing steal! With my main goal for the year gone (to paint the punic armies), let's try and set a second one, reduce the list to 15 projects by the end of the year! That'll be a though nut to crack!

Well, watched a batrep, hated every second of it  ;D ;D ;D

Over the top names, almost no customization in loadouts and too many hitpoints for single models. There are models with up to thirty hitpoints, and some of the rank and file models do 1 hitpoint per attack. Probaably a nice game, just not my cup of tea, and nowhere near the same as mordheim!

Maybe if i watch a few more batreps i could get into it, but i want to avoid that. This way i can spend my money on different things  ;D ;D

Scenery for that game looks awesome though!

I would like it noted that i didn't say no.

Just in case i change my mind later  ;D

In al honesty, the new style of gw kits doesn't really speak to me. Lots of very dynamically posed models, but almost no customization. I liked the sprues with separate limbs more. Lots of converting and posing.

Like the human sprues for mordheim for example, or the former generation of orcs and beastmen.

Been messing around aimlessly for a while now, no real project that can grab my interest. (i have enough going, but can't seem to focus on one)

So i decided to get some games in. After a long search (and a bunch of videos from guerrilla games on youtube), i decided to try warhammer skirmish/warbands. i have a ton of warhammer minis, but lacking the space to do the big battles. (i used to play in the FLGS but it closed down).

Decided to try the warbands stuff with 7th edition. I have 8th edition as well, but always found magic too big in that one. Had a blast with the few games i did.

Any one else ever played it?

Thanks you both!

I'm finally through getting my want list sorted for crisis, and like every year painting mojo returns after that.

Actually not too far off from my 'paint 600 models' goal for this year.

And i think 8 models away from finishing the legend of drizzt boardgame.

The mountain will get  a big top-up in 3 weeks though, when crisis has passed.I think i'll never get it done completely  ;D

Well, i don't mind it never being 'done'. There will always be additions that need to get painted. What i don't like is having games that are unplayable because not enough is painted/built.

So while having stuff to do is fine, having a ton of half finished projects is not (in my opinion)

Never playing with them kind of makes buying them pointless, right?

Got the last of the legends of Drizzt models done, must say these are the worst her/villain figures out of all 6 d&d adventure system boxes. Some weird sculpts and very flat detail. But hey, they are pretty cheap and do the trick!

the bad guys
(https://i.imgur.com/D3iSVxl.jpg)

the heroes (best part is the beer mug shield!)

Adding 8 to the model count: 528 models finished!

and the tally : About 5617 models are painted and 2009 models are still waiting for love.

+ i can scratch one from the projects list:

1) epic orcs
2)epic space marines
3)pendraken zombies and survivors (cleaned and prepped and mounted to bases)
4)warhammer fantasy orcs and goblins
5)  warhammer fantasy undead
6)  LOTR goblins
7) LOTR numenor
8 ) LOTR high elves
9)  40k imperial guard
10) 40k dark angels (dark vengeance starter set)
11) 40k chaos (dark vengeance starter set)
12) mice and mystics/reaper mouselings (prepped and mounted to bases)
13) D&D temple of elemental evil game (1/10th done)
14)D&D tomb of annihilation game
15) d&d mad mage game
16)napoleonic British/Hanoverians
17)napoleonic French

18)D&D legend of drizzt game (1/8th done)
19)undead pirate warband
20) republican rome
21)carthago

Wanted to get it down to 15 this year, but crisis will add 1 or 2 (or 3) so not a chance!  ;D ;D ;D

Decided to follow Lemmey's advice (for a part), and undercoated the 'quick jobs'. So the smallest things on my list, being the pendraken zombies and 20 en of numenor for LOTR.

Let's hope i can get them done before crisis, when the 'ooh shiney' kicks in and i work on other stuff!

Ideally, i could squeeze in another one, like one of the forces from the dark vengeance starter, but that would be a close call, with only 3 weeks remaining.

Well it was a sensible suggestion. The zeds got pushed back since invested heavily in mantics the walking dead, so about time i finish them.

I already got a numenor army actually, these are extras i got in an ebay lot, so will use to make the army bigger!

Already got the clothing on the Numenorians done actually, so just flesh, metals and the bases and they are already done!

Adding 20 to the model count: 548 models finished!

17)LOTR numenor
18)D&D legend of drizzt game (1/8th done)
19)undead pirate warband
20) republican rome
21)carthago

So pretty good alltogheter, 5 projects finished this year, almost at my goal of 600 models for this year, and my total left to do drops below 2000!!! (at least untill crisis gets here  ;D )

And ho knows, maybe i can get the zombies done before crisis, putting me (briefly) on my goal of 15 projects left!

Uh oh!  ;D

uh oh indeed!

The most expensive crisis yet! Happy camper here!

the loot
(https://i.imgur.com/MRW7RVq.jpg)

first up, stuff for sharp practice, printed copy of the rules and movement trays from warbases
(https://i.imgur.com/bmKydyd.jpg)

some nicely painted knights from the bring and sell
(https://i.imgur.com/GrahLHM.jpg)

the show exclusive miniatures, Lippens & De Bruyne, + also from the bring and sell,  all the show exclusive minis from past years that i had been missing, giving me a full collection!

victrix higlanders centre and flank box , both incomplete, but 97 minis for the same price as a a 'new box of 60', so happy with that
(https://i.imgur.com/ZZGavhn.jpg)

from Dave Thomas, where i spent nearly a third of my budget:

historical minis to fill out my brettonian army/ use for lion rampant /use for AMW
(https://i.imgur.com/RhgCU4v.jpg)

perry carlist war packs to use as peninsular guerrillas, and victrix french infantry
(https://i.imgur.com/bP1osvk.jpg)

including this very nice pack of civilians with donkey!

from mark's minitools, a headlight/magnifier, pin vice and drill bits
(https://i.imgur.com/gHAZpWK.jpg)

from eagle figures, spanish garrochista's, french voltigeurs and some odds and ends (including a good looking prussian landwehr figure in clogs with a pitchfork  :D )

some scenery items, mostly from emperor toads, a pack of pworks 'mordheim' buildings (the white package), and some goats from warbases (i have played a steal the cattle scenario from songs of drums and shakos last year, and it was fun, so i decided to get some goats instead of stealing tokens!)

included are a bunch of walls that are supposed to form a church, but they don't seem to fit togheter. Still was only 5€ so willing to put some effort in for that price.

then something of a bummer, 6 walking dead packs i got for half price, but when i opened them they had french cards instead of english, and the morgan one didn't even have any cards. Not a huge problem as i understand french, but still, they should note that on the box, there is no way of seeing the difference between these and an 'english' box. still great minis though!

also some bolt action stuff from a few different sellers, stug 3 and mortars for my germans and my us airborne
(https://i.imgur.com/KLx8hyh.jpg)

And then last but not least, my package from pendraken (and a pot of camo green that i forgot to order with Leon  ;)

inside some hard needed hobby supplies
(https://i.imgur.com/6km3PFp.jpg)

sherman dd's and some churchills, naval crew and oerlikons
(https://i.imgur.com/zkis6OU.jpg)

an LCT (yes i immediately had to fill it up with tanks, just for fun)

5 LCM's
(https://i.imgur.com/uWvrWxw.jpg)

My buddy bought into cruel seas so i decided to get landing craft for my guys, so we can combine both games by playing both sea and beach assaults!

So all in all, a great edition of the show for me!

Venue was very crowded though and some stands were near impossible to look at with people swarming around them. Have seen some nice games, in particular a battlegroup game , where we had a nice little chat with one of the club members
(https://i.imgur.com/4JGKuHs.jpg)

Really fun day!

Looks like you picked up a good mix of stuff at the show Peter....always love reading blogs about the big European/US shows....One day I might get to go to one...maybe  :o

thx's for sharing.

Well my wife was there with me, and there was no trouble (yet)

She even bought herself the same headlight/ magnifier as i did, for her hobby, so we are getting her in the right direction!

A pin vise is used by modellers. A pin vice is practised by sadists.

Not this year, didn't spot any (read that as: the stand that usually carries the mouselings is always at the back of the venue, and the budget only covered 3/4th of the trip through the venue  ;D )

It is quite ok. Must admit i kind of held of on buying stuff this year, instead opting to just buy everything in one big spend and saving a lot of shipping.

Worked pretty well.

That was a lot of stuff Peter! Very disciplined to not buy during the year, then pick it all up at a show.

The landing craft look really good - Leon could do to pinch those photos to use on the website.

Well i did get a few presents over the year, a d&d board game for my birthday and some gaming mats in a sale, but nothing else. I wanted to try and plan a project (peninsular nappies for sharp practice) and buy it all at once with noshipping.

Yes the landing craft are great, will paint these up very soon!
