Rather than randomly sticking YouTube music into various threads I thought I would start a catch-all.
Is there a particular piece of music that you think captures the feel of a period or celebrates a specific event?
As the discussion of "The Soldier's Joy" in another thread inspired this one, here is a recording that I think best captures the time:
One of my favorites, performed by the Chieftains (and Liam Neeson) and highlighting one of the many interesting sidebars to the Mexican/American War:
Yes folks, this is only Brexit for starters. Time to read up on Japan pre-1856.
John Tams made
Sharpe for me and has become the sound of the Peninsula.
One of the most horrible aspects of WWI
The
Horst Wessel would evoke the early days of WWI, but how about this ...
though these chaps seem to have got most of WWI and WWII covered.
Either of these makes me think of a certain place in SE Asia at a certain time
This tune can genuinely bring me to tears
"Garry Owen" and I see Custer's blonde hair streaming in the wind ... from a Sioux lance
"Hearts of Oak" transports one to the deck of a frigate under sail.
Here I go again by Whitesnake for solo wargamers
Heavier than everything that's been mentioned so far, but there's a Swedish metal band called Sabaton. All of their albums are war related and manage to tell stories of war, actions, and heroism etc without glorifying war which I think is a rather tricky task given the subject material. For instance they have been given an award in Poland, I can't remember which, it may have been a freedom of the city or something for honouring their history. Their big song is called 40:1 where the sing the tale of the fall of Wizna.
Well worth a listen or at least perhaps check the lyrics if heavy metal isn't your thing.
In my last war-game, a BBB ACW scenario, I played the soundtrack of Glory - mind you, I also played Best of Steely Dan and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.* :-[
* on that general lunar theme, I see Elon Musk has pointed out that the first five letters of Neil Armstrong's name spelt backwards spells 'alien.'
[btw, Nobby, sure it was a typo and you meant WW2 and not WW1 for the Horst Wessel reference]

(though in fact the lyrics are clearly post-SYW; the 5th dragoons didn't become the Anhalt-Bayreuth regiment until somewhat later. One of the minor historical errors in Barry Lyndon)
"Solder of the line", by Magnum.
(I bet I'm the only one here who's heard that.) :P

Pretty much anything from 'Two Steps from Hell' but 'Strength of a
Thousand Men is a particular favourite :

For inspiration, however, I find it hard to beat 'Preliator' by Globus. This is
the epitomy of music to play when sending in a glorious cavalry charge...
