Title: German Army uniform 1892?
Post by: Luddite on 04 December 2010, 11:35:50 PM
Hi chaps,

Does anyone have any info on what the German army uniform looked like c.1892?

My search-fu appears to be weak.

Lots of info on 1870s (FP era), but the online sources seem to skip straight to WWI.   :-\

Any help greatly appreciated... :)

Hello Luddite

The first thing that comes to mind is Osprey's Boxer Rebellion. There's a photo & a colour plate of the German East Asia Brigade with a description of page 35 with a reference to the uniform of 1892! If you don't have access to a copy let me know. I'll see if there's anything else on my bookselves in the meantime.

Cheers

Hi Dickie,

Aye, there are a fair few resources for the colonial service unfiorms of the period.  I'm looking for the European theatre uniforms though.

I think its probably the Purssian blue tunic with black trousers/webbing/pickelhaube (although other regions will have variations i suspoect).

Thanks for the help but my search continues!   :D

It's still the FPW style, some reserve units had bits of that kit in 1914. Not checked but think you will find tyhat Feld Grau appeaqrs in 08 to 10.

Hi Ian, 1907 i think was its first use.  Unsure though.

I'm assuming the FP uniforms were still used up to this point but i can't find any explicit evidence or statement that this is the case.

Me again!

Yup!The reference is to Germany's colonial troops but the blurb in Osprey doesn't make it clear if there was difference between colonial and home service for the uniform of the East Asia Brigade. It goes on to distinguish between field and garrison duty with Jagers and artillery. The bit that caught my attention was the statement "the model 1892  litewka (jacket) is field grey  ........." It then goes onto detail pockets, buttons, webbing etc. It does say that a summer service uniform was a light weight khaki similar to the Seebatallion

However, as there's no definite distinction so I could be leading up the colonial path.  :-\

EDIT

Aha!  Found something very useful.  Looks like it was the 'dunkleblau waffenrock' uniform.

While there were lots of regional and regimental colour variations, i think the one i'm looking for is the 'Preuss' (centre uniform) in this image.

Cheers for the help people, i think i've found my source!

Phew!

Hi Luddite

Whilst surfing through the TMP site I came across this thread regarding German Uniforms from FPW to WW1 and a link. It may be a useful addition to your research
