Title: Magnetic sheet and steel paper recommendations?
Post by: Nick the Lemming on 27 December 2018, 01:28:16 PM
I'm after some more magnetic sheet and steel paper for basing (one on the bottom of the base, the other in the bottom of the box). I need quite a bit (about 150 40mm square bases worth), preferably with some strength so they don't get thrown around in transit to the club. I can't remember where I got my last load of both from, but I know it was fairly cheap - just a couple of quid per sheet I think. Anyone have any recommendations as to where to get some? It would be shipped to Canada, so hopefully shipping wouldn't be too bad either.

Cheers!

I spoke to Magnetic displays at Partizan and the steel paper is no longer available and has not been for at least a couple of years.

Their supplier in China stopped supplying it and they have been unable to source any more. They now supply Ferrous sheet that is somewhat thicker.

You can still get the steel paper via amazon if you want to pay £5.19 a sheet! I suspect this is someone selling off the last of their stocks

Nick, I use this to surface the movement base (the "steel paper" part, although slightly thicker):
https://www.custom-magnets.com/magnet-receptive-rolled-steel-plain.html
Sold by the foot and you need to use your own adhesive. Their shipping costs are a bit high, but fast and reliable.

The magnetic sheets (for the figure bases) I get at Amazon (a variety of suppliers) - one pack at a time using best spot price.
Even if it is self-adhesive, I always roll on extra.

Unfortunately they only sell over the pond  :(

I also could not find steel paper.

So I now use a company called abel magnets.

They do very affordable magnetic rubber sheets for lining the trays, and thin metal infused rubber sheet which is perfect for the figure stands, and a triple pack of a4 is like a fiver I seem to remember.

snap - I use Abel Magnets https://www.abelmagnets.com (https://www.abelmagnets.com)

https://www.abelmagnets.com/flexometal-magnet-receptive-sheet for the sheets

They also do 3m and 30m rolls of 1.5mm thick self-adhesive magnetic tape in various widths

I've got a few bits from themagnetshop on eBay, only one base made up using it so far but seems decent.

Has anybody tried using mild steel sheet (available form builder's suppliers and blacksmiths) with their magnetic storage solution.

I'm interested to know how well it accepts magnets compared to more craft-oriented products.

Thanks for any assistance.

LITKO in the US has this:

https://litko.net/search?q=steel%20sheet

I use it and it holds well.  Not as good as a metal sheet, but acceptable.

Then there are these from Walmart:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Non-Stick-13-x-9-x-2-Covered-Cake-Pan-1-Each/14913190

The cover is reversible and they stack well.  I don't know how many I've bought over the years.  Great troop storage for only $4.96 each.  The guys and I regularly raid the local Walmart for them.

I use the thin steel from the supply shops.  I will send them to Leon as I haven't figured out how to ad a pic to my post.

I have the jpg but then what?  It doesn't copy between the [img] [img] brackets.

I have the same issue with pictures.

I think It's looking for a URL between the '[img]' tags.
I don't curren;ly have a website where I can associate an image with a URL.

Back on subject: Here's the stuff I'm looking at.  0.8mm sheet available in large sizes.

I'm thinking about PVAing it onto the bottom of my pizza boxes.

For steel sheets I buy flashing from the hardware store.

I need to buy some nice magnetic sheets now that I'm mostly using metal bases.

To post a jpg file from your PC to a forum thread you need to use the Additional Options... tag below the text box.

You can add up to two pictures per post and they need to be 128k or less.

I use The GIMP to reduce the size but many other picture editing tools will let you edit size and/ or resolution.

Slight delay in updating.

These good folks: https://www.themetalstore.co.uk/products/mild-steel-sheet-uk-suppliers

Delivered me some 39cm^2 mild steel sheets (.8mm thick) at just over £2.50 a pop.
Their cutting service was excellent, quickly costed my requirements, and delivered the sheets without any hazardous burrs on the edges.

The sheets are fixed into the bottom of my pizza boxes using silicone sealant as adhesive.
Some of my little men (Those whose bases I've magnetised) are happily and safely resting in the boxes

Since each sheet add a klio to the load (and I'm stacking the boxes 6 deep), I've improvised supports by cutting some 40mm wooden blocks and applying a magnet to hold them in place.
I'm using 5 per box, one per corner and one in the centre (think of the "5" face on a D6.

For weatherproofing, I've found I can fit 2 x 16" Pizza boxes into a garden bag.

Steel + Magnets + Pizza boxes = Sorting, storage and transport solution.

With their delivery charges themetalstore tripled the cost of a £5 sheet to over £17.  I passed on that.
