Title: Merry Christmas
Post by: Orcs on 18 December 2018, 08:07:18 AM
I would like to wish all those in the Forum a Merry Christmas and a Good health and happiness for the New Year.

To those I have offended in 2018  I apologise. To those I have not offended I will try harder in 2019. :)

Thank you all for your help, banter and general support.

Thank You to Leon, Dave and all the team for their hard work and superb customer service.

I've had my Xmas. Went to see my daughter in Scotland, and did the whole Xmas thing, just 10 days early. Actually got a white Xmas as well!

Merry Xmas all, and may we all see a peaceful and prosperous 2019.

It isn't compulsory (Despite what a couple of my more evangelical stateside pals on facebook would have us believe).

But I'll also wish the entire forum a Good Yul.

Could this be the way to defeat that damn callus on my left foot, which has made walking so much less of a joy of late.

I'd certainly recommend double socking myself, although I reserve it for when I'm walking (not often these days since the gout started...)

Quite agree. The NT Greek (which the Latin vulgate above translates) is: καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκίας.
ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία translates to "men well-seeming" or more referentially, "men In whom he is well-pleased."
The point being that on earth it's up to us to live in peace with one another. A point found, I think, in all ethically based religions (or philosphical systems).

Or as the judge said in "Bonfire of the Vainities" , "Go, and be decent to each other!"

[Verse 1]
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, my dog doesn't know he's old
My dog just knows if he's hungry, thirsty, horny, hot or cold
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, and that's why people stare
And even if my dog did know, my dog just wouldn't care
My dog is sweet and gentle, but he's uglier than sin
He's shed most of his fur, and now he's started shedding skin
My dog's eyes are always twitching and his lip is always curled
My dog looks like he's plotting the destruction of the world

[Verse 2]
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, my dog doesn't know he's old
My dog still struts around like he's some canine centerfold
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, or that he'll cease to be
Perhaps that's why my dog seems so much happier than me
My dog's right eye is bloodshot, and his left one's milky-white
His last few teeth are clustered in a hideous overbite
My dog is almost blind but hasn't noticed yet at all
So his skull's all creased from where he keeps on running into walls

[Verse 3]
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, my dog doesn't know he's old
My cat keeps trying to tell him, but my dog just won't be told
My dog doesn't know he's ugly, my dog still thinks he's glam
I wish I were more like my dog – oh God, perhaps I am

With apologies to John Finnimore  (who I think is a comic genius) for ripping this off from t'internet.

Cheers - Phil

Au contraire Mon Vieux; in the original Greek (Codex Sinaiticus) it is "ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία", in the vernacular "Peace on earth, good will to men"

And it was a group of singing faerie folk, all called Noel. who came up with it, apparently.

'twas the Latin I was translating.

I like my mother's version best: "Play nicely, children."

Some people on Shetland still acknowledge 7th January, but to be fair most also do 25th December 😉
