Title: 1740-1763 Saxons
Post by: mollinary on 27 November 2018, 06:42:40 PM
Hi Guys,

Having been suborned by Clibanarium's and kev's painting I am going full speed for Pendraken SYW range. But a question dor the SYW cognoscenti, what are the best substitutes formthe Saxon Army?

I seem to remember the Saxons dressed very similarly to Austrians (even going with white). The cavalry ended up fighting with the Austrians, but most of the infantry fought in the west with the French. This is after they had got out of fighting for the Prussians. The kronoskaf.com site is a superb resource for the SYW.

Austrians are very similar to the Saxon infantry uniform. Following the captulation of Saxony, Frederick made the Saxons dye their uniforms blue to save uniforming them from Prussian depots. The problem is that Saxon grenadiers wore a Prussian style mitre but you need fuller cuffs.

Don't complain if they get walloped! They weren't eating at the grown-ups' table in this war.

I'd go for Prussians, in the the Kronoskaf site they look more Prussian than French.  In 10mm, hard to tell anyway when painted.  Mine are 15mm; 2nd Saxon brigade at Minden. Mainly generic 18th century from Warrior, all uniforms, flags etc. from Kronoskaf  (the cavalry are French:
