Title: Eowyn Favorite LotR Character
Post by: Terry37 on 17 November 2018, 07:10:54 PM
For some time now I have been wanting to do an element for my Riders of Rohan army (HOTT) of my favorite LotR character - Eowyn! I've made several attempts using a Splintered Light Viking figure as the base and adding a female head with long hair. But was not able to get past doing the head transplant and keeping her long hair down her back - both attempts failed! But not to give up I thought about it and looked at the figures I was using for the two parts (I was also running out of extra female figures for their heads and the Viking figures with the appropriate attire) and how I might be able to make it work. Then it struck me Instead of trying to cut a head at the neck and keep the long hair in the back I decided to file a notch in the Viking and then take the head with part of the body even with the hair in the back. It worked great. A little liquid green stuff filed the minor gaps, and also allows me to create the additional hair length needed.

I am basing this element off of the scene in the last LotR movie where she is standing over her father taking on the Witch King. Included will be Eowyn with her helmet off, it lying on the ground, her broken shield, her left arm held against her body after the Witch King struck her shield and her father trapped under his horse. It will be a bit crowded for a 40 x 30 MM base bit it works out. I've pretty much finished making Eowyn, her helmet and am now working on her father and his horse, as I am having to create a look of the horse armor he had on his horse. Lastly I'll shatter a shield. Then paint everything and assemble the base. It's all in 15 MM.

She will be played as a Hero or maybe a Paladin.

Sounds like some major surgery Terry. I'm sure the end result will look fantastic.

No 10mm figures were harmed during the production of this HOTT element  ;)

Since she's in male dress and isn't noticed as a woman until she takes off her helmet, it doesn't sound too difficult. Just give her a hobbit to carry.

Think of this scene, but just before she makes the fatal stab (scroll down a bit). I'll take a picture of the layout tomorrow and post it.

Had a few minutes before church, so here's a couple of pictures of the general layout. The shield has not been destroyed yet, and will not be totally shattered as in the movie but broken into 3 or 4 irregular pieces. Reason is the shield was wood with an iron bar horizontal with the hand grip so probably wouldn't break like that (but who knows really), and in the movie it was obviously CG as afterwards there were no fragments of be seen. Please keep in mind it is still very much a work in progress so very crude in appearance right now. But it will give you an idea of what I'm after.

I am debating if I want to try and carve some design in the leather bard on Theoden's horse and the mail below or just paint it in???

More as it progresses,

Eowyn removes helmet,  Witch King goes "Oh sh*t!"

Yep, that would be funny, but she'd never even think anything like that - she's a Shield Maiden!!! And, her line is truly absolutely perfect "I am no man!".

FierceKitty, Yes I did read the post, but read it wrong. Thanks for correcting me. It was the Witch King that said that, and I read it as Eowyn saying that re seeing the Witch King. My bad!

No pictures as they would probably look just the same, but a lot has been done. Eowyn now has leather tassets made and added, and leather wrist braces carved into her arms, so I think she is basically finished save for painting. Theoden's horse armor is finished, but still have to decide if I want to try and etch something or just paint it in. I'm afraid if I try to etch it, the putty will just chip at the corners??? Either way, I will only be able to get a semblance of what his horse armor looked like - a geometric patterned  leather bard over a scale lower bard. The leather horse head armor will be mostly painted in. Had the dickens of a time working out Theoden to look as if he is pinned under the horse, but think I got it OK. I also added upper and lower arm armor on him too (carved in). Tomorrow I hope to finish them , so I can sand everything and then glue them to painting sticks, prime and start on them.

More to follow,

Terry

Sounds good, Terry. :)

Re 'the etching'.
What type of putty have you used...it makes quite a lot of difference.

If it's green stuff....I personally wouldn't try.....You'll probably end up with slightly ragged edges.
If it's more like a hard Milliput putty, you might have some joy.

Techno, It is liquid green stuff and I think your advice is he result I would end up with. I can usually file in pattern, but probably not this time, so I will be going the painted route. Thanks for the advice!

Ah... :-\

Liquid G/S ?.....Can't give you any hints/advice with that, Terry...As I've never used/tried it.

If it's like the two part epoxy.......I'll take a WILD guess and say 'scratching' it will give the ragged edges I mentioned before.

Might
be worthy mixing the tiniest bit on a piece of card/plasticard.....Letting it set....And then 'have a scratch' to see what happens.

Just a thought, Matey.

Phil,

It's put out by Citadel, and come sin a bottle like their paint. It thins with water,. and so I find it easy to use and can control the consistency by the amount of water I add. No mixing of two parts involved. It comes in a thick pastey form and you can usually brush it on, but I take a little on a pallet and then get a brush or two of water depending on the task at hand. It is fairly soft after drying and previous experience tells me it might crack if I try to etch it.

No probs, Terry ! :)

Having read the review from the link you provided, I think your idea of painting, rather than etching, is probably the best course of action.

Well Phil, Even after deciding to just paint in the pattern on the bard yesterday I bit the bullet and filed in he pattern! Surprisingly it came out OK, I will probably also have to add some painting to make it look right, but it is etched! The real bear yesterday was adding the rib across the top of her helmet - would have been so much easier had I done it before I removed it from the original figure because it is really tiny!. You can see her helmet here.

I just need to do a few bits today and they are ready to prime. I'll share a new photo afterwards.

That's good that it came out nicely, Terry.  :)

Sounds like it's a slightly 'harder' putty, than the two part epoxy green stuff.

Hmmm, just had a monkey wrench thrown in on this one. To be sure I was going to be playing her properly in the HOTT rules and her part in the story, I asked some of my HOTT gaming friends if I was going in the right direction. Good friend Paul came back advising she is neither a Hero nor a Paladin. She is actually a troop type referred to in HOTT as a Sneaker. Think of Frodo and Sam, or of an assassin, or one who has special abilities to kill a leader.  And the more I think about it, he's right!

Now the down side to that is, that being the case, her base is now reduced from a 40 x 30 to a 40 x 20 , so there's no room to put Theoden on the base with her!!!! I could still do it as HOTT does allow for deeper base, but I really prefer to not do that, and only have done so a very, very few times to fit a tank model I really need in the army. So, it seems all the work on poor Theoden is for naught. I'll still paint him up and base him on a separate base maybe, don't know yet as I just saw Paul's note a few minutes ago.

Bottom line, Paul is absolutely right!

More to follow,

Terry

Keep Theoden as a marker for when someone offs your general!
In that case, what do Merry and Pippin count as, behemoths?
Title: Re: Eowyn Favorite LotR Character
Post by: Terry37 on 26 November 2018, 05:44:31 PM
Hmmm, seems my inquiry from my freinds has brought much discussion and more has come my way since I postd about the Sneaker possibility. Seems that he Sneaker role doe snot really fit Eowyn for several reasons.

1. Sneakers are not mounted, and she was riding as a knight.

2. Sneakers cannot kill aerials, and the Witch King would be an aerial in most cases of that scenario.

3. I see a Sneaker as one who sets out to destroy an enemy leader, and Eowyn did not do that. She simply we to save her father,

So, I think I am back to the Hero as her element.

Lemmy, I like your idea if I were to go another route than as a Hero of using Theoden as a fallen General. I do have an element like that planned for use in DBN where there is a rule about generals in combat.

I had to chuckle at merry and Pippin as a Behemoth, but they might very well be, at least Merry.......     But except for my fellowship army I do not have them as part of my Rohan army, which is what the new elements are for.  had I made Eowyn as a mounted element I would have had Merry riding with her. Although I probably should put Merry in somehow.

If I were doing a HotT Rohan army I'd have

Theoden as a Knight General
Eomer and Eowyn as Heroes.
A core of Knights
Perhaps a couple of Riders

Optionally

Gandalf as a God - very powerful, constantly having to leave to deal with some other problem!
Merry as Sneaker

OK, here's where I'm at. Everything is back as originally planned. Paul's recommendation as a Sneaker only made sense from the stand point that she killed Angmar. But further discussion and thinking on my part realized there is one critical difference between a Sneaker and any other troop type - and that is, a Sneaker's sole mission is to take out an enemy commander - so think of Sam and Frodo. In combat with other troop types, even if the Sneaker wins the losing enemy is unaffected, except for save a Hero or maybe a A Magician - don't have my rules handy. But that's not important. In Ewoyn's case her sole mission was as a warrior to fight any enemy, and she just happens to be confronted by Angmar when he was attacking her father. Further, if you take the position presented by Paul, then anyone who kills a general must be a Sneaker, which is not the case.

I would not make Merry a Sneaker for the same reason, he was a warrior and again just happened to be in the right place at the right time to stick Agmar. But I'm not sure how to play him as I'd really like to add him to my Rohan army, using one of Pendraken's 10 MM Dark Age figures for him.

Re Gandalf, although he is a very powerful wizard, I see him as more of a Magician than a god. I do see Sauron as a god, but of course a very evil one.

My army is basically set up to play two ways - the army at Helms Deep with Knights, Eomer as a  Hero, Theoden as a Knight General, an element of dismounted archers (Shooters ), an element of dismounted Knights (Blades), Up to two Ents as Behemoths, up to two beats - Hourn, and two elements of hastily armed civilians - Hordes.

Then for other battles, based more on Pelennor Field, I'll drop the Horde elements and Ent(s) and add Ewoyn as a second Hero and a Rider element of horse archers.

Gentlemen, I thank you very much for your thoughts here and ALWAYS welcome such input. I never  take it negative, and find that I often miss things, so keep that kind of input coming!

Ah! Finally some sunshine and so here are some pictures. Please keep in mind these are only the very basic base coats and are a long way from being finished and ready to base. But they will let you see the figures better than the previous pictures. I took a front and back of Eowyn as I am very pleased with how her beautiful blond hair came out. I still need to add the gold panels to her tassest and the cuirass seems to have had some very faded reddish portions which I need to try and add. I also need to do all of the work on Theoden's armor

Here's her he;met which is really hard to see due to it's small size and my camera,. You can also see some of her shattered shield as well.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh235/terry37photos/Painting/DSCF1747_zpsogliootj.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/terry37photos/media/Painting/DSCF1747_zpsogliootj.jpg.html)

Funny thing that this makes me think every time I see it that in the movie and this scene - when Angmar throws Theoden and his horse when they come to rest you can see Theoden pinned under the horse with is feet sticking out under the horses underside. But in all the scenes where Eowyn is fighting Angmar you only see the horse - no Theoden and no feet! Me thinks Theoden was not around during the filming of those scenes!!!!

Guys, Have been laid up for he past week with a terrible cold so no painting has been done, but lots of nose blowing and cough hacking!  Prior to this I finished the base coats on Theoden and the Rohan horse archers so they are ready to wash and highlight. Once that's done I can base them.

I've also finished an element of Muscovite Dragoons for that army which also need a wash and highlighting.

I hope to have some updated pictures shortly.

Finally back in the pink as they say, and got some painting done. Finished the figures for three elements.

Theoden for my Eowyn Hero element. Also the mounted archers to be played as Riders.

For my Muscovite army I finished the Dragoon element which will be played as a Lurker.

I'll start the basing tomorrow and am contemplating adding the fallen tree section to the dragoon base as it seem to balance it a bit more.

The Muscovite Dragoons are under a different thread on that army.

OK, I'll bring this one to a close as I have finished Eowyn with Theoden, and an element of Horse archers.

And the mounted archers

This finishes off all of the elements I had planned for my Riders of Rohan army.

Hopefully she and her fellow Rohanians will be smacking some orcs around Saturday in a big battle HOTT LotR game. I'll take my camera and hopefully be able to share some pics afterwards.

Thanks everyone for the great support you all give. It is truly appreciated and serves to inspire further work.
