... preferably a readable and reasonably detailed single volume history, please.

The absolute best and most readable account is Gill's Thunder on the Danube trilogy

It has the advantage of being readiliy available too.

other older works by Arnold and gill can be harder to get

I've just ordered the three books by Gill, got two of them reduced price on Pen & Sword, the other on Ebay, total outlay £40 for all three, although some may be softback rather than hardback.

I'll let you know....

The Kindle version of the first book is quite cheap at least in the US.
