Title: Help on US Armored Div structure 1943+
Post by: hakejumble on 22 August 2018, 06:40:41 PM
Hi all,

As the title suggests, could anybody point me in the right direction as to how US armoured formations were structured from D Day onwards?

I am looking at putting together a US force for BKC games at my local club.

I have the Osprey book on them, however it is a little word heavy and I'm struggling to make head nor tail of it.

Cheers,

Jake

If the book is too impenetrable try the download site wargames vault. The micro mark lists there are often pretty useful - and very cheap. They'll be lots to choose from from the regimental combat teams (RCT) all the way up to Corps assets.

GHQ have a load of TOEs at the battalion level: link (http://www.ghqmodels.com/pages/military/squadgames.asp).

Check the Nafziger OB's on the US Army Combined Arms website.  A lot of information there.

One of the easier ones this :

From the top -

Div HQ - Two bases - CO and HQ - use M3 1/2 tracks, Jeeps, and signals lorries
3 CC - A, B and R - Lt Tanks, M3's and jeeps- two CO/HQ bases.

3 Tank Btn - each 2 HQ base, Sherman + Jeep. 2 Bases 105mm Shermans, 1 base Recce (Jeep), 9 Shermans (a mix of 75 and 76mm) and 3 M5 (or M24 if later on)
3 Armoured Inf Btn 2 HQ - M3's and Jeeps, 1 M7 Preist, 1 M4/21 Mortar, 1 Jeep Recce, 4 MMG in M3, 3 57mm A/T, towed by M2/3, 3 Mortars carried by M3, and 9 Rifle Plt in M3

1 Cavalry Sqdn - 2 HQ/CO in M3 SC or M20 with Jeeps, 9 M8 Recce,  9 Jeep Recce, 1 M8 HMC, 3 M5 or M24

Arty (Divisional) 3 Armoured Arty Btn - 3 OP (could use Sherman, jeep, M20, or L2 Piper Cub)  3 Batteris 1 M7 Preist

could add

TD Btn - normally SP - Recce Coy 3 M8 Recce, 3 Jeep Recce - 3 TD Coy HQ in M20, 3 TD - M10, M18 or M36. M10 and M36 could be mixed
AAA Btn - this does not operate as a btn, add to other HQ's  3 Bty each 2 M16, 2 M15.

Arty - much as you want, mostly towed, from the pool.

Hope that helps

I agree!

Well my American order is in for collection next weekend. I don't suppose anyone has any pictures of their US collections? Interested to see what the Pendraken range looks like painted up.

Cheers,

Jake

There are other lists for specific divisions, 2nd and 3rd Armoured, for each month of the war from 1944 to 1945, showing attached support units, eg:
