The Airfix 1:400 plastic kit. Assembled awaiting priming:

I'll update as it goes along, gonna be a long one ;)
Will you be painting it for show, or waterlining it for gaming?
Very nice so far.
Thanks folks.
Show, a bit too delicate with all the sticky out bits for gaming. A broken mast would be a disaster, what with rigging and all involved.

You don't really need rigging for gaming.
Problem is that with no rigging the masts are much more vulnerable, certainly on smaller scale ones.

As I said, it's not intended for gaming.
Roughly painted. Got to start prep work for the rigging, i.e. drilling holes. That's followed by:
- 'final' hull painting
- fitting decals
- varnishing

Now, that's looking damn fine !!

Excellent!
Cheers. :) Proceeding to the next phase.
Excellent stuff - that really does look like wood.
The kit as it comes is complete. Definitely needs some rigging as it looks rather bare:

Can't claim credit for the fancy stripes - they're decals though some of them were devils to fit :(
Looking good!

So in the lyrics ofa Sex Pistols song you will be "Frigging with the Rigging"
I expect there will be lots of friging as the thread gets a mind of its own , ties itself in knots and sticks to everywhere but where its supposed to.
Good Luck.
Coo !
Very nice ! :)
Cheers - Phil
I thought this was a long term project. It's proceeding faster than my short term projects.
There will be a lot of friggin' in the riggin' 'friggin this', 'friggen that' just have to avoid the whole friggin' thing gettin' chucked against a wall n >:(
It is a longterm project, just that I've dropped everything else to get it done. Going to slow down from now on though.
:-bd =D> :-bd
Good luck with the rigging
This is looking so excellent!!!
Terry
Still at it, got the main and fore masts done, some of it at the second attempt. Plus the thread I bought was way too big a diameter in both sizes, back to what was available.
Moving on to the mizzen and jigger which are rigged completely differently from the first two being lateen rather than square rig. Unfortunate as I had just gotten up to speed on the square stuff :(
Managing to retain what's left of my sanity. ~X(
At one time I built sailing ship models from plans and in doing the rigging I always waxed the rigging line. This is simple to do, buy a wax block and then just draw the line through it. The wax helped prevent the line form sagging and being affected by humidity changes and did not show. I got the wax block from a model ship company.
You may not want to mess with this step, but I'll offer it as a suggestion anyway.
Your model is looking superb!
Terry
Terry, I've used a similar thing here and there in the form of fly-tying wax used to wax the silk used in tying fishing flies. As an ex trout fisherman and fly tyer the tools, knots and other things have come in handy.
With only the main sheets missing, time to move on to the ratlines
Great work 8)
Rigging's done, some cock-ups on the way:

Now on to the ratlines :-SS
That is definitely looking DAMN fine !
Cheers - Impressed of Wales. :)
Much swearing I bet !
Doesn't half look good though. Went to see the real McCoy back in 1987. Lots and lots of misty spray.
Cheers guys.
Sadly the only ship I've seen is the Discovery in Dundee. Might get to visit the ones down south yet, never know.
SV.....
Have you got the most enormous hands ?
I really am starting to struggle with how big/small that ship is.....And getting more and more impressed by the minute.
Cheers - Blown away, of Wales. :o
:) Her overall length point to point is 170mm or 6 1/2 inches in old money, keel to top of mainmast is 110mm or 4 1/4 inches.
I think the paws are standard i.e. non-Trump.
I say, very fine.
Just don't turn too fast with the gun ports open!

No, no, no, no ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D
That's a lot longer than I'd have imagined.
I'm still
well impressed !
Great job, SV.

;D what he said!
Very much like the looks of her Sir.
It was my total incompetence at rigging model ships that dissuaded me from a career as a surgeon.
Excellent model. As for surgery, it was blood and guts that put made off!
A really beautiful looking model! Very well done!!!
Terry

Terrific job ! :-bd

Thanks again for all the kind comments folks 8)
Time to draw a line under it I think and move on to something else, I wonder what...
HMS Victory, Cutty Sark maybe ?
Victory already done back in 2016, Cutty Sark too difficult for me.
What's in the stash is the French galley 'La Reale' and a Spanish 'Galleon' (looks more like a Galleass), both from Revell in 1:450 and a pirate ship 'Black Swan' in 1:350 from Zvezda.
Takes a long time to build up to a ship, so something a bit more mainstream ;)
That's a nice looking bit of kit!
